We were guided by Chance on the Bare Trail and he insured we had the hike of a lifetime. The astonishing scenery was complimented by his extensive knowledge of the area and sharing of the Navajo history and traditions practiced here. Only someone so intimately familiar with the canyon could have navigated us down/up the canyon walls--there is no visible trail. For those leery of exposure this trail would not be for you. It's been a few years, but my old best man and I took a trip up and drove the south rim and took a tour on an ORV. The canyon is more impressive to me than the Grand Canyon. The views are spectacular, there are cliff dwellings and petroglyphs all over and the Navajo have all kinds of gardens and orchards in the valley they tend in the summer. Our guide used to be a kid in the canyon growing up and had lots of interesting tales. I highly recommend the visit. read more

What a tour. The scenery in Canyon De Chelly is breath taking. The rock formations are colorful and varied. They are several locations with ancient ruins and petroglyphs which are awe inspiring. For me, I needed a larger vehicle because of mobility issues. We were picked up by Autumn at our hotel and the adventure began. Autumn was very knowledgeable. We had an amazing 4 hour hike into the canyon. We saw ruins, river crossings, petroglyphs and pictographs. What a beautiful and sacred place. You will see so much more than if you just make a quick visit to Canyon de Chelly and only go to the rim. The tour guide tailored our hike to what interested us, and we did a point to point route so we could go a little farther and see more. I have been hoping to go to Canyon de a Chelly for the last 15 years and for one reason or another I was never able to get there. I have never done a keep tour, we are more the hiking type. But we wanted to go down to the canyon floor and didn't have time or ability to do a long hike. At first, I was a bit concerned because we have two little children and we weren't sure how that was going to go with a 3 hour tour. We met our tour guide Delvonnia at the Best Western. My husband strapped our two car seats to the back of the Jeep and off we went into the Canyon. We were greeted by a family of wild horses that live in the canyon by the two owls. We stopped several times to look at the cliff dwellings and learned about the history of the canyon from our amazing tour guide, who grew up in the Canyon. The weather was cloudy and we were graced with thunder and rain towards the end at our last stop at White House. We loved Delvonnia, she was so knowledgeable. But not only that, she was so happy to share her upbringing at the Canyon and her culture. We really enjoyed talking to her all 3 hours and even more because we ran a bit over time. She was a great driver and was so nice with the kids. Our kids did not cry or utter one word the entire time and were super happy at every stop to play on the dirt and look at the jeeps big wheels lol. It was so much more than we ever dreamed of and we even agreed that we had the best tour guide we've ever had. I would definitely recommend this tour and ask for Delvonnia if she's available. We had a great time! We did a 3 hour afternoon tour. There were 4 of us in an H2 with Reginald. He was knowledgeable, personable, and very conscious of our safety. We saw petroglyphs, ancient structures, and heard stories about the Navajo people. Reginald played his traditional flute for us, and we were lucky enough to see a demonstration of an atlatl (spear thrower) by one of his fellow guides. I can't tell you how much we enjoyed our tour with Reginald!! It was an amazing trip and he is so knowledgeable of the area. Be prepared with good hiking boots or stable shoes as the area is rugged and some parts sandy but anyone with different activity levels can easily enjoy. This is a 1000 out of 10 experience for seeing the sights and learning about the significance of this area to the ancient Anasazi inhabitants and its importance to the Diné. We recently had the pleasure of staying in Chinle and taking a canyon tour. Our tour guide Jarvin Yazzie was amazing from the moment he greeted our family (3 adults, 2 teenagers, and 1 active 4 year old) until he dropped us off back at our van after. Jarvin showed us many beautiful sites but also taught us a lot about the Navajo culture including a few words of the language (sorry, Jarvin if we were terrible at getting some of the sounds right). He was patient and kind with our 4 year old member who called on him frequently. We do enjoyed meeting family and seeing home life. We bought some beautiful pieces which have a very special place in our home so we can recall the beautiful experience we had. The tour guide, Frank, framed the history of the Canyon from an historical frame leading to a current frame and from a broad historical frame to a personal familial one, so that I could understand the Canyon and it's people from different perspectives. This was an exciting, beautiful tour of the canyon. We had Oscar as our tour guide who was calm, patient, knowledgeable, and funny. They called us about an hour before the tour started to confirm our time. The driver/tour guide picks you up at the Best Western, wise to use the bathroom at the restaurant but if you miss the opportunity, you will have access to bathrooms inside the canyon. From there, Oscar drove us to get our permit ($2 CASH per person) which is super quick. We got lucky because we did our tour this week and the canyon has lots of water from the snowmelt so it made our tour that much more adventurous. Oscar gave us ample time and opportunity to take pictures of the canyon. If you take the tour in the summer you might get a chance to see the families living in the canyon. Because our tour started at 4, we got to see the sunset on our way out of the canyon which gave way for beautiful pictures of the sun reflecting on the canyons. This 3 hour tour ended up being almost 4 hours. The Canyon is beautiful and I would recommend a tour, but I would look at other tour companies. Irene our guide droned on for an extra 40 minutes. She stated she is a Navajo yet she has never been to the Hubble Trading Post less than 40 mins from the Canyon where a huge story of the Navajo Walk is displayed. Our guide stated she googled information about the canyon even though she grew up there. Lastly after dragging the tour out almost another hour with only one restroom stop, she stopped to text her boss as we drove out and then drove past our hotel drop off as she wasn't paying attention. November 2013; The Canyon is breathtakingly beautiful! In order to experience the true essence of the Canyon it's best to have an actual Navajo who grew up there to guide you. The tour company owner, Leander Staley, is that kind of guide.....he is a gifted, kind, spiritual, professional and very knowledgeable tour guide who grew up in the Canyon~ He is brimming with knowledge about the Canyon, his people and the Navajo Nation. He kindly answered ALL our burning questions about the Canyon and the Navajo people. He showed us great places to take beautiful photos. He took us to his family Hogan....what a special treat! I felt so deeply honored. He explained their traditions in depth. He spoke proudly of his family (and his dog, who had surgery for an injury that very morning). My friend and I had a private 4 hour tour with him. At the end of our tour we both felt as though we had made a new life-long friend. We did a week long road trip of 1000 miles and this tour with Lee was the absolute HIGHLIGHT OF OUR TRIP!!!! I'd go back in a heartbeat! We booked with this company several months in advance, based mostly on the number and quality of reviews. I think there are other companies available, though. One thing to check, based on the timing of your trip, is the relative time-zone for Arizona. They do not follow daylight saving time, so if you are driving to the area for an afternoon tour from some town a few hours away, you may or may not gain an hour. The head of the company was reach-able for questions in advance by email. Cell service in the area, given the great distances and sparse population, is spotty at best. He did call us the morning of the tour to check in and see if we wished to start earlier. We drove from Mesa Verde in the morning for a 1 p.m. tour. We made it to Chinle just before noon, so we just grabbed a quick lunch from Burger King to save time. The tour begins at the lobby or parking lot of the Best Western hotel. Chinle is not a big place, so this is easy to find. You turn off the main highway (191) onto the road leading to / around the canyon, and the BW is just beyond the high school. There will likely be several guides waiting to pick up scheduled tours, so you'll need to sort out who is with which company, etc. There didn't seem to be any attempt from the guides to 'poach' other tours, but YMMV. Our tour company had (at least) 2 guides waiting. We thought we were going with one, but then he wound up taking another couple. It was a hot day and we had requested an enclosed vehicle (open Jeeps are another option). To accommodate us, they had to shuffle things around and in about 10 minutes someone else showed up with a Denali for our group. After that we were off. My advice is to bring a liter of water per person, as you'll get thirsty rapidly in the arid conditions in the canyon. Our guide had grown up in the canyon and despite being in his 60s, was able (and a bit anxious) to demonstrate how one could exploit semi-hidden carved footholds to rapidly ascend up the walls. He had a lot of information to share, and was most interesting when he was 'off script', I thought. Driving through the canyon was an interesting experience; sometimes there is no real 'road', only a large field of dry river sand. at other points, there is a dirt track to follow. We made stops every 5 - 10 minutes to examine petroglyphs and to check out ruins or canyon scenery. The photography opportunities were excellent. Hearing about how the Navajos and related tribes have been treated in the past and are faring now is sad, but history is not ways uplifting. The tour concluded back at the Best Western. I tipped our guide as I appreciated his time and narration. In all, I think this is a one-time experience. read more

Upon drivers arrival he was unprofessional and seemed to be in a foul mood - stories on the trip were totally against the federal government and he stated the rangers leave their trash in the ruins. He told all about his financial / house issues. For the cost of this trip it was not worth it and I will not recommend this tour company when visitors inquire about this wonderful National Park National Monument. read more

We were quite satisfied with our tour company, Canyon de Chelly Tours. Our Navajo guide, Irene, has lived in the Canyon her whole life and was quite knowledgeable, not only about the archaeological sites but also the flora, fauna and local stories. She was quite open to talking about her culture and how it's evolved over the centuries. She also showed us some great photo points and made sure we got some wonderful shots. Be aware, when you go into the canyon, the vehicle will be driving thru very deep sand and the ride will be very bumpy. Because of the difficult driving conditions, most tours only go in a couple miles but we saw more than enough and were quite satisfied. I still dream about canyon, the ruins, the adorable coyote we saw, and most especially, the wonderful stories we heard. We did the private Jeep tour, and it is not to be surpassed.
