This place has country charm times two. Get the potato soup if it is the Soup of the Day. It is the best that I have ever eaten. The soup could have been a few degrees hotter and it should have been served with a different 'drag through the soup' bread but it was still delicious. read more

Everything is great at this restaurant except for the hamburgers. Whatever they're using, it's not beef all beef or lean beef. It is a mixture of something, but whatever it is not good. read more

Food was good. Their house dressing (sweet onion pecan) was amazing as was their salad. Be aware- they have a blue late special (changes daily) and only available until until 1. Dinners really start at 5 and some are only available on weekends. But we had the hamburger steaks and they were good. Oh, and can't forget dessert- Mississippi Mud pie with ice cream. Yummm!!! Stopped for lunch before checking in to stay at the B&B. Blue late special of catfish was ok. Wife's bunless burger was good. Returned for dinner at 6. A few other tables occupied. Ah hour later still waiting on dinner. One cook working. Waitress did not know if they served coffee. Figured out they did but didn't know if they had creamers. Found some half and half and ask if that was ok. Coffee was ice cold and prob left over from breakfast. 20 minutes later got a hot cup of coffee. 90 minutes after arrival found out they had neither the baked potato or potato salad we ordered. Chef salad came out with almost no ham,turkey,cheese, or bacon. Sent back after three bites. No manager or supervisor present or available. Three young girls working and none with any authority. But they were trying. If I could do less than star I would. read more

Word of Mouth brought me here! I've driven past this eatery many times and never knew about it. Nestled along the Natchez Trace and concealed by the historic town of French Camp you'll find a quaint little diner named The Council House. You can place an order to go or just seat yourself and wait till be helped. They are such nice folks, if you look lost when you walk in, they'll notice and be at your service promptly. I ordered a small Broccoli Salad (best Broccoli Salad I've eaten) and a Turkey Sandwich-So Yum! They make their own bread, ranch garlic mustard and several other amazing condiments. I called me bf as I was leaving bragging on the coolest little restaurant I just found. We made plans to take a motorcycle ride back soon! read more

What a wonderful little gem to discover while driving the Natchez Trace Parkway. We spotted it in reviews before the trip but were also told at a Trace information center that it was a lunch stop we should not miss. So very right! The food was outstanding, as was the atmosphere at the log structure's outdoor tables. Great place to have a leisurely lunch on a lovely October day. The turnip greens were the best I've had in years, a reminder of my Georgia childhood, and the catfish was indescribably good. This place is definitely off the beaten path, but it's well worth a stop for anyone enjoying the slow drive along the Trace. read more

Enjoyed a club sandwich with roasted broccoli here today! Had yummy coconut cake for dessert! My children had chicken sandwich with fries and club with onion rings - Mississippi If our with ice cream was delicious according to my son - we all enjoyed our meal so much! Quaint little cafe! Friendly people and fast service! Little gift shop that has some handmade novelties that I am assuming are from local artisans- we also enjoyed a gift shop across the street very much! The council house offers delicious food and a wide variety. I am from out of town and made the assumption it would not be very busy due to the size of the town and surrounding wilderness. I was wrong! Make a reservation if you can, they are busy! They have a lovely setting, excellent food and sweet servers. We had cheese curds, a delicious blt and a pimiento cheese sandwich. In case you didn't get the memo, Council House Cafe in French Camp, MS is a required stop for anyone who travels up and down the Natchez Trace. 80 miles north of Jackson, MS, just off the beautiful Natchez Trace Parkway, located in a charming log cabin with a deck overlooking the woods, this little cafe is an absolute gem. Their menu is simple and they do it well. Their bread, white and sorghum wheat, is made in house, so are their soups. The potato soup, not too thick, not too runny, not too rich, was probably the best potato soup I've ever had, even without bacon pieces. The chili was seasoned perfectly. The Cajun Roast Beef Sandwich was simply delicious. I am not sure if it was the food or something in the air that gave me a sense of euphoria. Our sweet waitress left a giant pitcher of ice tea on our outdoor table after my husband ordered tea, which he initially thought was a special treatment for him, until we noticed every table got its own pitcher. We stopped here while traveling on the Natchez Trace Parkway based upon a recommendation of a park ranger at the visitor center. We are very glad we listened. We both had Ed's famous BLTs. We also had the chili and topped it off with a Mississippi mud pie. This was very folksy, down home cooking like your mother would make. The BLTs were great. The chili was very thick and satisfying. The Mississippi Mud Pie should be illegal. The service was great, very friendly. This is a wonderful stop along the Trace. Like the Terminator, I'll be back. read more

What a pleasant surprise along the Natchez Trace. We stopped in French Camp while driving and hiking the Natchez Trace. We arrived about 12:45pm and were ready for some lunch. We did not have high expectations but decided to try the "cafe" nestled in between the historical mile markers and the bed and breakfast. The menu consists of mostly soups, sandwiches and salads. I ordered the BLT and hubby ordered the grilled cheese and a cup of potato soup. Wow! One of the most flavorful BLTs I've ever had. The spicy mayonnaise definitely connected all the sandwich fillings. The grilled cheese and soup were also great. We walked away with big smiles and happy tummies! A definite "must" in middle Mississippi. read more

Drove over an hour tonight just to eat at Council House... Yes, it's THAT good! The BLT is amazing! Their house honey mustard is excellent. The broccoli salad is the best I've ever eaten. Let's not forget the Mississippi Mud dessert with a scoop of ice cream! Seriously, one of my favorite places to eat. It's always a treat. The service is wonderful... And the atmosphere... Wow... Today was a beautiful day to eat outside on the patio at council house cafe. I felt like an oddball, like any time I do when I go somewhere new. The waitress was quick to notice this and point me in the right direction. I ordered the BLT with chips. The spicy mayo on this sandwich is even better than I imagined after reading the other reviews. The service is above and beyond for a small roadside cafe. You pay in the gift shop, and they have the spicy mayo there for purchase as well, so I had to get some for home! I hope to be back! read more

If someone had not offered it as a suggestion, I would have driven right on by. I guess you could say I got lucky. Aside from the warm and friendly staff, the food is absolutely delicious. While I only had a BLT sandwich, it was carefully crafted and well put together. Not simply slapped together like one would find in a busier part of the country. I was brought here 10 years ago, when I moved to MS, and omgoodness!! Now given they have cut their portion size from 10 years ago and from what I hear that was cut from 10 years prior, but if it's any bigger it would be a waste. Depending of who's working you may get less meat than normal, but it's ok. It's still enough. When they have their BBQ sandwiches that's all I get because they are sooooo good! The second Friday of the month they have steak night. You better get there at 5:00 if you want steak because of not then you're outta luck. It comes with a New York strip, potato, a mini loaf of FCA's famous bread and a salad for $17! We normally split plates because the steak is so big. Make sure you tip!! Road the Harley 160 miles to get there, and it was worth every mile. I had stopped there back in March, but was there before they had opened for the day, so decided to go back. Glad I did. All the ladies that work there are truly awesome, and make you want to come back. I had the club sandwich and it was big. I could barely get it all down. Very tasty! After the sandwich I was talked into some dessert, and got the mud cake. Again delicious, and more then I could eat. Very unique building and village setting. Study up on the history of the place before you go, and you'll be able to appreciate the whole experience a bit more. I will stop again the next time I go that way. read more
