    About French Camp
    Christina E.

Word of Mouth brought me here! I've driven past this eatery many times and never knew about it. Nestled along the Natchez Trace and concealed by the historic town of French Camp you'll find a quaint little diner named The Council House. You can place an order to go or just seat yourself and wait till be helped. They are such nice folks, if you look lost when you walk in, they'll notice and be at your service promptly. I ordered a small Broccoli Salad (best Broccoli Salad I've eaten) and a Turkey Sandwich-So Yum! They make their own bread, ranch garlic mustard and several other amazing condiments. I called me bf as I was leaving bragging on the coolest little restaurant I just found. We made plans to take a motorcycle ride back soon!

couldn't ask for a better place for lunch on the trace

In case you didn't get the memo, Council House Cafe in French Camp, MS is a required stop for anyone who travels up and down the Natchez Trace. 80 miles north of Jackson, MS, just off the beautiful Natchez Trace Parkway, located in a charming log cabin with a deck overlooking the woods, this little cafe is an absolute gem. Their menu is simple and they do it well. Their bread, white and sorghum wheat, is made in house, so are their soups. The potato soup, not too thick, not too runny, not too rich, was probably the best potato soup I've ever had, even without bacon pieces. The chili was seasoned perfectly. The Cajun Roast Beef Sandwich was simply delicious. I am not sure if it was the food or something in the air that gave me a sense of euphoria. Our sweet waitress left a giant pitcher of ice tea on our outdoor table after my husband ordered tea, which he initially thought was a special treatment for him, until we noticed every table got its own pitcher. That's just how they roll. Council House Cafe, French Camp, Natchez Trace. Just go.

Great stop on the Natchez Trace. My favorite is the club sandwich with the Mississippi Mud Pie for desert.

I also had a fresh, fluffy baked potato. Mike had the fat boy burger. It was really good . It has a unique sauce that I had no issue with, but Mike was not a fan of. Great bun and fresh toppings. Hand pattied meat. The onion rings are hand battered flour based and are to die for. The homemade salad dressings are delicious The service was amazing. The woman who took our order cares so much about your food and experience that you would think she owns it. The young lady with her was so bubbly and talkative. An all around great experience. The staff here are adamant about when busy, not allowing patrons to save tables as they walk in the door. That way those ordering first have a seat choice first. I like that. But I also like the burgers and roast beef po-boys. I have yet to find something on the menu that's just mediocre.

We all went in there with higher expectations and it failed. Ambiance: 3 Stars - Connected to the their Asian market, you enter on the left side of the market. Open space with 12 normal size tables that seat 2-4 and one round table with a capacity of 6. When busy, it can be loud however during our visit, it was not. The only person that was loud was a toddler and she was part of our group. We took turns with her by going through the market as we waited for the food. Service: 3.5 Stars - the highlight of the meal was our server. She was friendly, professional and knew the menu options. We asked different types of noodle options and she was able to answer them. Our drinks was on our table within 5 minutes of ordering and made recommendations from the menu. Food: 2-2.5 Stars - We, ALL, wanted the food to be better. All items were fresh and served hot, however the flavors were notably missing. 1. Shrimp w Garlic Sauce (spicy) with vegetables and served w a bowl of steamed rice. 2.5 Stars. - Well, it wasn't garlicky or spicy. I think the Garlic called in "sick" for this dish. The sauce was too sweet and chili peppers was more of a garnishment to the orange garlic sauce. However, the shrimp were large and cooked perfectly. 2. House Mein - 2 Stars. Again, lack of flavor in the sauce. The egg wheat noodles were al dente, as it should be, and the veggies were fresh. However, the shrimp, sliced chicken, and pork didn't soak up the flavors of the sauce. It was "meah". 3. Shredded Duck Lo Mein noodles 2.5 Stars. We thought this would be a rich dish due to the lovely texture of Duck meat and skin. However, the shredded Duck was too thin to enhance the noodle dish. Plus, it was a bit salty. 4. House Mei Fun 2.5 Stars - thin rice vermicelli noodles served w pork, shrimp, egg, sliced chicken, bean sprouts and beans. The soy and oyster sauce is the based for the ingredients to be mixed up. Overall this was best of dish of the 4 items we ordered. However, it was slightly salty. To enhance the dishes we added Hoisin and Sriracha for added flavors or to balance the sweetness or salty taste. To the cook's credit, both types of noodles (Lo Mein - thicker egg or wheat based and Mei Fun- thin rice vermicelli) were cooked perfectly. Now, will I come back again? Maybe. I would try other dish to confirm if other dishes are more flavorful.
