As far as lodging, a simply wonderful staff at Castle Rock. Friendly, chatty if you want, but they'll give you space if you don't. I had a basement room, which seemed like a weird idea, but it was fairly quiet down there despite being across from the washing machine. Very well insulated rooms. Upsides: rooms, staff, free breakfast with very nice stuff - had lox! with cheese wedges on raisin bread and scooped some yogurt with nuts and raisins for a topping. Great views for sunset. Clean rooms, a novelty to open them with the key you're given (hint: hold it over the "5" on the door. someone had to show me that). Downsides: Shower pressure. Not terrible but I've had better. Verdict: Definitely over 4 stars, so based on the great ambiance and staff I shall round it up! Those things do matter!

Every unit faces the Ingonish Harbour and what a treat it was to watch the sunset and, subsequently, the sunrise the next morning. There's also a deck behind the unit with a bench and table and chairs. Parking is in front of each unit. Upon entering the room there's a small kitchen storage cabinet with a microwave, coffee maker, kettle, a couple sets of crockery, and a small table and chairs. On the other side of the room there's a mini fridge. The bathroom had its own heater but it didn't work and the bathmat did not stick to the bathtub. Be careful of slipping while showering.

Upon arrival, we asked the front desk staff a number of questions about the area, and were expertly directed to the places and activities we were interested in. We made a reservation for dinner and were seated by the window with a view of the ocean. The waitstaff was very pleasant, and the food was divine! We had the spring salad, which had a medley of local greens (even some mint!) along with rhubarb, baby turnips, and a delicious dressing. My husband's steak was cooked perfectly rare--just how he likes it--and the accompaniments were steamed fresh asparagus and amazing mashed potatoes. I had the fresh halibut, reportedly right from the waters visible from our window--and definitely tasting as so--served with fresh asparagus, and roasted red potatoes and turnips. Dessert was lemon cheesecake with blueberry sauce drizzled over, and warm apple spice cake with homemade maple ice cream (to die for!). After dinner, we enjoyed a walk on the property's beach to watch the sunset, sitting in Adirondack style chairs. There was a spot for a fire, but we didn't have matches to light it with. Our room was one of the log rooms, which are 3 to a building--all facing the ocean, with large sliding glass doors and a small front porch. We were in the middle room, so the porch was private with walls on each side. The beds were incredibly comfortable, with fluffy pillows and crisp, fresh linens. The bathroom was spotless, with extra towels and toiletries. The one downfall to this room was the level of noise present from the other two rooms; we could hear the conversations from both sides. However, the view made up for the noise! A continental breakfast was included, and had a variety of homemade muffins, incredible bacon cheddar scones, and oat biscuits (my new favorite treat to go with my coffee!). There were also a few different cereals, as well as hard boiled eggs and fresh fruit. I took a to-go coffee and sat on the bluff enjoying the morning sun. We only stayed one night, but should've stayed our whole vacation! We will definitely be back--we loved it!

He called back something like "sounds good" About 10 min later a woman knocked on our door & not very nicely, told us check out was at 10 & we owed $20 for the late checkout. We went up to the office & spoke with the owner. Customer service did not seem to be his priority as he would go back & forth between being snarky & not. In the end, we were not charged the $20, but the experience left a very sour taste in our mouths.

Long story short, if you can find somewhere else to stay in the highlands, stay there.

We had four different units between the group, two up and two down. All were spacious and had small kitchens with every implement for cooking a meal for four. With these things in mind, it felt that our room was just a bit overpriced: 1) You can hear traffic on the road. 2) There is common room lighting that illuminates through the door all night. I actually went to find the switch to turn off the lights, which was not easy, and I'm sure was not appreciated by the host and the people who needed that light. However, what could we do? It was so bright in our room. 3) You *must* keep the bathroom door closed and the bathroom window open, as the smell of sewage will seep in. We found out the hard way about half way through the night when the smell woke us up. Breakfast was one of the best we had on our trip. Also appreciated are the loose teas available for guests. The host was not there, but the place was being minded by a woman who was an introvert that I would not put in charge of a B&B during high season. Though she was nice when you asked for help with something, she could come off gruff to some and volunteered no info about the area. I really wish I had known that across the street was a beach - we had no clue, and missed out on this opportunity that we surely would have taken, had we known.

The room had a little balcony to sit outside on and enjoy the fresh air. The Patton had a screen door as well. I worked recommend this place if you want something reasonably priced, comfortable and clean.

However, for us, we couldn't give it full marks because of the little things - no tea towels or pot scrubbers in the kitchen, no salad bowl, no kitchen grater. And this one other little detail... We were offered a cooked lobster for dinner months ago and verified this by phone a few weeks before our arrival, and we were most excited about this! Upon our arrival, we were informed that due to a storm days before, the lobster hadn't come in. No problem, but we would have appreciated either a quick phone call or an e-mail alerting us of this beforehand so we could have picked something up along the way. We were fortunate to make it to the village co-op store minutes before they closed, or we wouldn't have had dinner. Best to come prepared to Bay St. Lawrence... Small details in an otherwise positive experience, but it's this attention to details that make the difference between the good and the best!
