The Historic Wolf Hotel - Dinner at The Historic Wolf Hotel

Are you're interested in ghosts? Do you think a demon has attached itself to you and won't let go?…read more(Hello, to my family.) Do you see things out of the corner of your eye and think, "That must have been a spirit?" Are you at all curious about the afterlife? Then you need to stay at The Historic Wolf Hotel in Ellinswood, Kansas. This hotel is haunted, according to the locals. They've seen things. Stuff happens in the rooms. I visited this hotel with a couple who had stayed here once, and they refused to stay a second time because they had experienced paranormal activity. Fair enough. I was booked for an overnight stay, and I admit, I was a little scared. My room looked like a Victorian dollhouse. There were mirrors in the room, and every time I looked in the mirrors, I expected to see a spirit. I don't believe in this kind of stuff, but I also don't not believe in it. Who am I to say these ghosts at The Historic Wolf Hotel don't exist? Maybe they do. But, it turns out, if they do exist, they didn't want to visit me. No, no ghosts visited me during my stay at the hotel. Whew. If you want a restful night's stay, I suggest packing a sleeping mask and ear plugs, because the only thing keeping you up at night will most likely be the trains that pass by every few hours that honk their horns. This hotel is located directly in front of an active train track, so you will be treated to train horns galore. The hotel, as a place to stay, is really neat. It has a common kitchen and dining room, with snacks and breakfast foods available to guests (think cereal, muffins, granola bars, etc.) You also have access to the Keurig coffee pot, which makes a nice cup of coffee. You can enjoy your little breakfast in your room, or in the shared dining room / sitting room. It's a pleasant place to relax. One thing to mention: The only way up to the rooms is via a steep series of stairs. So if you have a hard time climbing stairs or are in a wheelchair, this hotel might not be for you. The hotel also hosts lunches and dinners, and I happened to be here to sit for a dinner. We got a salad, main course and dessert, as it was lovely. I mentioned this in a different review, but across the street is the underground tunnel tour, which is definitely worth doing.

What can I say .... It's historic and beautiful, extremely clean and unique. Great food and stories…read morein the restaurant. This is a great way to connect with your roots in this area of Kansas. Their services are very punctual and helpful. Wonderful staff and owners.

The toilet seat was not secured with screws to the frame, the shower didn't function properly, and I was awakened from sleep at 1am by the night clerk who said she had a noise complaint. We were in bed, not talking, and no TV or electronics to make noise. Nothing. She insisted. The same clerk, who had a clear language barrier (India) argued with me about the pronunciation of the vehicle I drive as well as the color as she stood typing my registration info. She was cold and unfriendly. Furthermore, I am a combat veteran, and the discount Best Western offered was just $6.00 on a $139 room. That's not a discount, it's an insult. I will neither recommend nor return to that hotel. It's old and maintains low standards and clearly does not honor the Best Western brand. Paul C., Oklahoma City

PEE SOAKED BED pull out couch was SOPPING WET with urine…read more My grandmother is a business owner who winters in Arizona. Every year she stops at this hotel both ways on her drive down from Minnesota. I am accompanying her to assist on her trip home tonight and was planning to sleep on the pull out couch. We reserved our room this morning ahead of time and arrived around 10:30 pm. After 13 hours of car travel we are exhausted. Opening up the pull out couch I first noticed something like pieces of tree bark on the sheets, and then found when I went to wipe them off that the sheets weren't dry. Then further realized they were outright wet. Sniff test confirmed the comically absurd and horrible fact that the sheets were soaked through into the mattress with pee. We called in the front desk woman who was helpful but not apologetic. She was ready to just give me new sheets and have me sleep on that mattress until I pointed out that it too was wet and stank. I am so exhausted that I just decided to not be difficult and just put the sheets on the dry but stiff adjacent part of the couch that doesn't fold up. My grandmother, who has been a habitually loyal customer for probably a decade, left the room to ask if they could reduce the bill. Now a man named Roy, who was either the manager or owner, was involved and when she explained our situation to him she was yelled at, threatened with being asked to leave, and accused of dirtying the bed herself as a scam. When she said that accusation was insulting he called her names. At this time it's reached about 11:30 and she is rationally scared enough about being unable to find another place to sleep that she just walked back to her room with some meager new bedding and hoped nobody came to remove us. This has been a dehumanizing and inhumane experience and she won't come back.

One star is too many however, it makes you pick to post a review. Disgusting, disappointing, never again! The first room we were giving after arriving at 2 in the morning not only didn't have a working shower but had an adult bedbug. Second room had a working shower but also, one dead and one live cockroach. Over priced, no refunds, No pool, no complimentary breakfast, could smell the cigarette smoke in our room even though it was a non-smoking room, not sure when the last time the furniture was vacuumed. Just totally disappointed. If you love or even like someone don't let them stay here.

They made our stay very pleasant while there with my husbands company .. ok so I've never really stayed in many older motels , this would be my second one, we stayed here for 8 days , they have great rates on hotel apps , I used Travelocity, it was 39$-41$a night which is insane cheap so I was hesitant to book , but glad I did. The staff are super friendly, they have hot breakfast, pet friendly (my Yorkie mix was free of charge). The bed didn't break my back, location was right next to everything in a small town, my fur baby likes to go outside at weird hours during the night and I never felt unsafe , now the bad ... the bathroom bathtub was horrible, like horrid !!! I think there was a liner over the tub so, when you stepped in it , the tub bottom would move like a water bed ...also hard water stains etc, needs remodeling ASAP .. I did notice some stains also like on little things like the door and lamp , the sheet didn't fit the bed correctly, and there were no pillow protectors., the wifi was either a hit or miss .. but for the price , I would stay here again!

We were warmly greeted at the front desk and were surprised to learn they offer a complimentary breakfast--and it starts at 5:30 am to accommodate the folks heading out to fish in the morning! Our room was along the back of a long building, with plenty of parking at either end. In the yard behind the building is a bit of outdoor furniture and playground equipment. Our room had a nice-sized refrigerator, plenty of counter space, and a good shower. Everything was fresh and comfortable. Breakfast had plenty of hot and cold options and ample seating. There's also a game room in the main hall, which we didn't have time to check out. The Lodge was a great bargain and pleasant experience; I'm so glad we found it!

We had an issue at breakfast w a woman who would not keep her dog on a leash. My mom asked and she told my mom it would be ok. The dog was behaved but once they sat down the dog tried to eat off her plate. If you have a service dog it should not be doing that. The dog wasn't not tethered to the owners. When the owner saw my mom's distress about the dog, he asked the owner if they could move to a different area to eat. The woman refused saying the ADA allows her to stay w her dog. We were able to leave without incident but my mom was restricted on her movements because the dog was near the coffee area and door. We witnessed the dog smelling the cabinets and fridge which just isn't sanitary. We appreciated that they were making sure my mom was ok.
