That being said these treats are wildly creative home crafted goods, and made with quality ingredients. As far as vibe goes what more could you ask for! Either sit outside enjoying the outdoor seating overlooking beautiful mountains, or if it happens to be winter and you don't fancy yourself turning into a human popsicle. They have plenty of indoor seating as well with warm welcoming friendly energy. I am always blown away by the flavors, and always excited to see what's new! Which I must add emphasis on that because the New treats are on a daily basis. You name any small business on earth rocking that kind of respect, and excitement for what they do!? Making it really easy to say "But First Coffee and Bakery" is added to a very short list of places I genuinely look forward to visiting when back in Montana.

Inside, is a lovingly converted art gallery, with walls jammed packed with local artists' works in various media. The works range from epic sized paintings, to pottery, to jewelry, to sculpture. There's a lot of talented artists in the area doing mostly paintings of wildlife and landscape scenes. When I went, there were a few patrons browsing, and clerks helping answer any questions. Everything is for sale, and clearly marked with the artists' names, title, and price. The art seems to move in and out through here- it's not a static display. There's no dust on the art frames, anyhow! The gallery is located on the edge of a nice little park with a gazebo and lots of lush grass across the street from the supermarket. It's a perfect place to have a picnic and check out some local culture.

A small art gallery next to the coffee shop on the main road of Bridger, Zier Gallery has a great…read moremix of pieces for nearly any taste. The gallery, owned and named for the local artist whose works are displayed, also has a blend of beautiful pieces in bronze, wood, leather, and stone highlighting the talents of other local artists. The paintings have a western theme in the color palette of landscapes and portraits, but it's the horses that appears to be the main love of the artist. They're beautiful still life paintings. As for the other items, the bronze pieces are so meticulous they seem to want to move. The small animals crafted with alpaca wool are almost like a toy stuffed animal, but more intricate and too nice for a toy. The jewelry, made with local rocks and stones, are substantial pieces that almost require you to see the lines and spots and "imperfections" that bring out the overall beauty. This gallery and its owner, Dana Zier, can also provide murals where one might have a space that needs something, but where the art needs to be part of the space, not just an attachment to it. It's a wonderful gallery to explore and worth visiting to see the works of local artists.

Buyers beware! I purchased a rather expensive water pearl necklace that turned out to be a dud. It…read morewas supposedly made by an "artist," who bought pearls and "Parisian" pendants (mine was religious) to create these necklaces. I gifted the necklace to my sister-in-law, who wore it for a total of two hours (in my presence) during which time a link broke. Upon my request to have it replaced, the owners refused and said it was in "perfect condition" when I bought it. I took it to our reputable Panowicz's Jeweler and found out it was made of a flimsy "base" metal. To replace with a quality link was $45. It would have cost Whispering Pines $60 to replace the water pearl strand-portion of the necklace. I cannot believe they could not afford to back their product! I frequent Red Lodge, but as with Ms. Reinsch's review on Facebook, they are unrelenting and rude. I too will never shop there again!

The large well-worn wooden doors in the sandstone brick is enticing but might be, for some, sketchy. There's a large sign on the door but no other markings. When I walked in, I was expecting a small space, but to my surprise, the building is far larger than it appears -- like a Tardis, I suppose. Things are sorted -- kind of: the kitchen things are in one spot, the glassware dining and living room accoutrements in another, and then a middle room with old clothing, spurs, saddles, chaps, and the back room with toys, books, vinyl, pictures, tools, knives, and other general things. The owner, a spry older man, tells everyone to come in and browse. If he's not helping a customer, or haggling over pricing, he's quietly sitting in the front reading. There's no air conditioning or water as he explains why he's not open in the winter. It's an old building that in the heat of summer stays cool inside. Owing to his health issues this might be his last year and he'll close when it gets too cold outside. But then again, maybe he won't. He hasn't decided. But for now, make him an offer on whatever you find and he'll work with it. Many of things he has accumulated he found from various road trips in the Dakotas, Wyoming, Nebraska and points west. When he mentioned his age and how long he's had this shop, I suddenly felt as though I have accomplished nothing at a much younger age. What a life he's had. Two visits to this shop already -- not because I need or want anything, but because I enjoy the adventure of the search and the stories. With that said, I did find a couple original craftsman screwdrivers to replace some I lost. I have to work on my haggling skills, though.
