You can visit the site of the forlorn Mercantile, but the doors are shuttered. The woman who runs the bar lives 35 miles east of town and kinda sorta comes in whenever the mood moves her as I understand it. The hotel is rickety and way past it's best days. One bathroom for 13 rooms and you can't lock your room door when you leave. No one around to steal your stuff anyway, so that's not an issue really. The door to our room had a 2"-3" gap at the top and, truth be told, wouldn't even stay shut without pushing clothes or a chair up against it. When people arrive late (midnight one night we were there) you hear every word they say as they shuffle in. All the rooms are down a single hall on the upper floor. Noisy I tell ya. The owners are warm and accommodating. The food is average at best, but as it's the only place to sleep or eat within 30 miles ... I have back packed through parts of Eastern Europe and stayed in a few places that are rough and tumble. Crazy Mountain Inn could be one of them. Still, all in all, a fun little place with happy folks all around.

Ok! We have stayed here three times in the last 3 years and thought I had reviewed it but I had…read morenot! Overall it's a decent place IF you get the right room, but it's also quite rundown, especially in the hallway near the washing machines. The floor needs replacing, but let me get into this room review. 1st of all let me say that the first two times we stayed here it was just barely enough room for my family, they do not offer rooms with a third couch bed so we had to fit two adults and three children onto two queen beds and that was difficult. But other than that, the other two times were decent and we had no issues. This time they put us in room 123 Which Was Way down the hall on the first floor on the left. At first it seemed fine, but then we started noticing. There was crap all over the floor that needed to be vacuumed up and then we pulled a bedsheet back and there was hairs all over the place, it looked like it had been remade after being used and then just re-sold. But what made me really upset was my wife found a crumpled up tissue under one of the pillows on the bed. That was it, I went down to the office and complained and they said they would find us a new room and by the time I came back to the room, it stunk so bad that I was going to throw up. Apparently, when the toilet gets flushed, it releases a massive amount of disgusting smell that filled the entire room so even without those first problems, I would've immediately left the room to prevent myself from throwing up and would've stayed in the lobby in a chair instead of in that room if there was no other rooms available. Thankfully, that was not the case, and they put us across the hall in room 122, and this room was just about perfect. In every way, it didn't stink, it was clean, everything was fine. And the only problem was the very tight sleeping situation. So for the first two stays and this third stay, I will give them overall a four star rating. They were very nice and helpful, even the nice lady at night who was probably dealing with all sorts of stuff like that, she was very helpful and very nice. And then their breakfast was nice too. It's not the fanciest breakfast in the world, but it has a waffle maker and that's always nice and then there are miscellaneous fruits and muffins and eggs and stuff like that. Overall, if you don't have too many people, I do recommend this hotel, however, be very careful about the room you get and make sure to check everything.

Bathroom - sink was gross and definitely had not been cleaned. Bathtub had not been cleaned either. Clumps of hair stuck on the side of the bathtub. It looked like only the faucets had been wiped off to look like it had been cleaned. I used alcohol wipes and cleaned the sink and bathroom counter myself, spread towels on the floor and the bathtub so as not to have to put bare feet on the floor. After seeing the bathroom, I didn't want to touch anything in that room without spraying it with disinfectant. Glad I brought my own sheets and blanket, because who knows what could've been lurking under the sheets. This room needs a real clean, not a pretend clean.

Your first view of the log cabin lodge reveals an unpretentious structure that is very roomy inside with a large common room that serves as a gathering/breakfast space, seeming to be, with the loft, a nice facility for groups. The Lodge is constructed of logs that remained after a fire consumed 12,000 acres including much of the ranch. The hosts Ruth and Blick shared their story about the building of the lodge which we found fascinating. Our rooms were very spacious with cathedral ceilings with outside entrances/porches. A pond lies just outside the Lodge and a stream just steps further(our fishing skills were too limited to take advantage of those opportunities). Cattle graze all around the site as part of its ranch setting in the coulee and we saw turkeys and deer along the road. Breakfasts were simple but good with large portions and very accommodating (we needed breakfast at 7 AM and it was on the table right on time each day). The long rock/dirt lane road made us wonder whether we were in the right place but signage assured us that we were. The road also encouraged us to stay in during the evenings which was fine for us and resulted in a very tranquil stay. This was our first exposure to Montana "ranch" life and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

Preparing meals together was a valuable experience during the reunion. Six individual rooms like hotel rooms -- private bath, closet and area to unpack suitcases, towels, linen, roll-away beds, clock-radios, porch-space outside. High ceilings and quaint log construction. Large common area for dining and socializing. Internet by satellite -- adequate for Email and web, but you won't be streaming video. Cell phones out of range, but you can get cell service by driving 1.5 miles up the road to the ridgetop. Hiking and some fishing on the stream nearby. Large pond for a canoe or raft. Garden flowers and green lawn. Cattle on the surrounding ranch are entertainment. Near enough to Big Timber. The only shortcoming: this area recovering from a fire a few years ago; surrounding hillsides show dead twisted trees with new trees only beginning to grow -- namesake "Burnt Out" lodge. Would certainly go back again; would certainly recommend.
