Some people are just tired or overworked or mad at something else. This Guy (the owner) doesn't like people. Didn't look me in the eye when he talked to me. He gives the impression that you're bothering him. After I qualified myself worthy of a repair (bought the generator from him) he instructed me to pull around to the side of the buidling to the shop. If I had known he was going to meet me there and direct my backup I would have rolled the windows down so I could hear him. He was not in a good position to see him in the door mirror. I was judging for myself and stopped backing up when I heard the screaming. Now, between the snotty unwelcoming greeting ànd this screaming to stop my Van, I decided to give it back. He loved it. It wouldn't have taking much for this screaming match to turn physical. I don't know why he was so adamant about stopping me because when I got out I wasn't even close to anything. There was nothing to hit! I decided to ask who he was and he was the owner. (No wonder) any employee would have been fired. Anyway, things calmed down long enough for him to check the oil in the generator. It was too low. He said I need a new generator. He could be right however I will get a second opinion. Certainly not here to bash anyone but thought Id pass along my personal experience After reading others. Moved down to the area almost 10 years ago and asked around for a reputable small engine repair shop to address an older Echo HCA 2400 Articulating hedge trimmer that i couldnt get running right after replacing the trimmer blades. I know this is an older unit as i personally bought and used it in a service business. Anyway, i replaced the blades and commenced to using it around my home. I did give it ur standard maintenance tune up along with changing the worn blades, plug, air filter, fuel filter. Used it for about 6 hrs around the homestead and couldnt get the high and low set right so thought Id give these guys a try. I knew I was in for it when the first words after setting it on the counter were "it looks like ya need a new one". Told the owner i just put some new blades on it and i cant get it to run "right" but just used it on and off for about 5-6 hrs so it does indeed run and good enough to trim . A day and a half later I get a call it needs to be replaced so i drive over and pick it up. I order an 85.00 OEM Echo carburetor and install it. That was 2 years ago and it still runs like a champ. Dropping 85.00 was welcomed after seeing the 600.00 replacement cost. Oh well read more

The reviews I've read for this place are harsh. As a local who stops in here whenever I need something, I find them very helpful. My experience has been that Marty wants to help people. He seems to become annoyed with know it alls who are condescending and ask for sizes and parts that aren't right or don't exist. Do yourself a favor: hand them the broken part or describe the issue and get out of their way. They'll fall all over themselves to help you and solve your problem. I've gone out with parts to test---no charge. I dumped over a can of paint at home and ran to their store and frantically told them of my emergency. They ran around and gathered a rug machine, some detergents and solvents and told me to go---I can pay later. Time is important. I will go here first---though 1 star is missing because they don't always have what I need. But I'll still stop by first. My review for County line hardware don't normally leave bad reviews. I am a almost 50 year jackson resident like Marty. I own a somewhat successful local small business like Marty Some tell me Marty would give you the shirt off his back, I would also. That's where the similarities end with ol Marty and I. I can remember going to county line hardware ever since my mother took me in when I was about 5 years old when it was next to Fine Fair or Acme where CVS is now. Being a small business owner myself I always try and support local small businesses. I have to say my visits have gotten less and less as the years have gone by because who wants to go spend their money at a place where they are treated like they are an idiot by the bloated head behind the counter. I get this guy (Marty) the owner thinks he is superior then everyone else but bud you own a hardware store. You haven't been doing brain surgery for 50 years. And I'm not putting your work down I own a janitorial company. Difference is I don't walk around with a superiority complex like you do. If you can go somewhere else my opinion is go elsewhere. Rather go through every time this guy has tried to belittle me or other customers I have witnessed I will give the last one the other day. Like I said my visits have gotten less and less. I used to try and go there for any of my needs rather one of the big box stores but it really has gotten down to the last few years going in for my pool supplies. You would think that should be a easy in and out. One would think. I normally get about 3 containers of shock from them throughout the year. They come in 5 gallons. One or two in the beginning of the year one in the middle and one closing up at the end of the year. Now when you get these containers he (Marty) has to pay a deposit to his supplier because they are nice reusable containers. So when you get the shock at the end of the year he doesn't tell you hey I need the container back by Sept 10th, October 3rd or even November 17th. You take it I would assume when you finish the 5 gallon product you bring the container back. That's what I have done for the almost 10 years I've been getting them I would imagine it's been that long now or close to it. I certainly won't bring it back 3/4s full. So May 4th I go in the day after my 48th birthday. ( Only say that last part to go with the story I'm a little old for another old man to be scolding me like I'm his 13 year old kid) So I go in and say I'll take a 5 gallon container of shock (because you have to specify 5 gallons or you will get snapped at "what size the gallon or 5 gallon") as if the guy who thinks everyone else lacks common sense he should know if a grown man wanted the gallon I would have carried it over with me. His daughter waiting on me says "is this your first one of the year". I say "well yes I have one at home from last year". You would think I started beating one of his dogs running around the store. As the King Marty who is standing 5 feet from me starts yelling " you can't do that Sir" "you can't do that Sir" he repeats. I continue to complete my transaction. And try and ignore the man yelling. He yells again " you can't do that Sir" I don't charge you a deposit but I have to pay a deposit myself. I nicely looked at him and said I realize that. And went back to completing my transaction. Apologized to the daughter and left the store. The next day or maybe the day after returned both the empty containers. When I got in the car told my wife I had gotten scolded. She said ofcourse you did. She said why this time. Told her the story She said did you tell him it had 3 gallons or more left in it. I said no never really got that far. When he started yelling you kind of don't want to explain yourself to someone like that... So you have been warned. The bad reviews you read here aren't the guy just having a bad day like we all have. I'm imagining it's rare if he has a good day Obviously if he has something cheaper then you can get elsewhere. By all means do your pocket the favor. But if you want to just help a local small business out this guy doesn't deserve your business.. And if he is running for any public office in town I'd rather vote for a billy goat then Marty. A billy goat has more self control and self awareness then he does. read more

WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE. I work for a landscaping company that used to take their tools to this place and every time I went to drop off or pick up I was met with NOTHING rudeness. Even when I had trouble pulling in, I was yelled at by the owner "STOP HOLDING UP TRAFFIC"; (there was no one behind me). Besides for that; I've had to take back the same tool MULTIPLE TIMES for the same problem. Terrible experience. Please get a better mechanic. read more

At first I wasn't a fan of this place because I was a baby back bitch like the rest of you guys leaving bad reviews. But the more and more I came in I started to grow a liking to it. Maybe it's because I like real people and not ones who sugarcoat things. I would come here often for pool chemicals and things I need around the house. I just read an article from 2016 about the owner and whether he is the grumpiest owner ever or a genius and while I can't comment on the genius aspect- I can comment on the grumpy- he knows his stuff, is helpful and cuts to the core. If I could give this merchant a zero, I would. I've taken my chainsaw to this place a couple of times to have the blades sharpened and then later my rider mower believing it was an honest place. I should have not given them anymore business. I paid a lot of money for the rider mower job that didn't fix the problem - a friend ultimately fixed it and was simply because they didn't put any thought into what was really wrong. They told me a possible new engine down the line and it was a solenoid that needed replacing. Today I came to pick up my push mower. When I dropped it off I specifically asked for the carburetor to be cleaned ONLY. My jaw dropped when he (the owner) told me the amount. The bill was more than the mower....heck I could added a couple more bucks and bought a new one! Before I gave it to them, I changed the oil and filter myself. Accidentally, I poured questionable fuel into the tank and that screwed up the carb. But their repair bill included a new air filter (because it was so mashed up with dirt!) and a new blade (did I ask for a tune-up??). Oddly, their affiliated store in Howell did the same to me a couple of years ago. Maybe they figure I'm a stupid helpless woman because I'm the one bringing in the machines. read more

Great family owned place to do business with. They picked up my 20 year old Craftsman 54" mower I told them if it's not worth fixing I will just buy a new one. They could have called me like many would do to tell me they looked at it, it's not worth fixing but we will waive the bench fee if you buy a new one from us. Instead I got a call, they told me what was needed and two days later during lawn season they dropped a mower off that runs like new!! When I heard of a local place that services/sells lawn equipment, I was excited to give it a shot (as I much prefer to buy local and touch/feel what I am purchasing). However, that good feel quickly escaped when dealing with the folk(s) at this place. When I questioned a price being higher there, as compared to a reputable online retailer, they (both) quickly told me that I should go purchase it elsewhere and that I would get what I pay for, in so many words. Bottom line: limited equipment, higher prices than you can find online, and very poor customer service. Don't expect to feel welcome here ... It's unfortunate. read more

Wish there was a zero option. This is my first negative review I have ever written. I have done business with County Line several times. The service was fairly decent in the past (depending on who you spoke to and they do carry a line of products not available at the big box stores. Today was a very different experience. I entered the store and greeted the owner with a happy hello. I attempted to find a certain 30 lbs. bag of post emergent broadleaf weed killer. I was able to find a smaller bag and did notice about six large bags on the bottom shelf. The packaging was different and from what I could see reflected a completely different product (crabgrass preemergent). I returned to the counter with the small bag and very nicely asked the owner if there were any 30 lbs. bags available. He gave a dirty look and said they are underneath (were I notice the other bags) in a snotty tone. I returned to the back and looked closer at each of the bags. I found one of 6 that matched what I wanted (but did have completely different packaging). I retuned to the counter and before his daughter rang me up I nicely asked "Can you confirm this is a post emergent and not a pre emergent product. She was unsure and asked the owner. He looked at me at said "I appreciate you leaving a mess back there". I removed 2 of the bags from the shelf and left them neatly upright very close to the others. The only mess was a very out of touch person. Can you imagine how much more successful his business would be if had just basic customer service skills. At this point he will never possess them. This place is the reason I prefer to buy my parts online, either on eBay or other outlets. I recently went to buy a part. I didn't have the model number but I did have the dimensions. The poor excuse for a salesman had to get off his ass to 'help' me (there were no other customers in the store). After a quick search on eBay I found the part and bought five for the price I would likely have paid here. Not only did I waste a half hour each way driving to support a local business, I went home empty handed because they're too lazy to even try. There are other options for the consumer, sadly, based on other reviews, they haven't learned what it takes to remain in business.... not only first time purchases but repeat business as well. If you want to go to a great hardware store...DO NOT GO HERE!!! The workers are awful!!! I went to go get paint tape and the worker was arguing wether they had 3 different kinds or 4. It was ridiculous. When you walk in, all you see are dogs all over the place! What shopper would want to have dogs walking around the store when they shop. And the paint store next to it that they also own is unattended. No one is watching you. There are these random stairs that were pitch black. The whole store was just ridiculous. read more

I've been dealing with these folks for a long time--since when they were actually on County Line Road. Also deal with their "sister company" Norm's Small engine Repair. They are like an old time hardware store with a lot of stuff you won't find elsewhere. Tim (from Norm's) has been a great help in picking out chain saws, blowers and other equipment. In my experience, he knows his stuff and is always ready to help. While I agree that the bedside manner of some of the others at County Line could be improved, I always find them helpful and objective. They know their stuff and never steered me wrong. I've used them for both purchases and repairs. If you want warm and fuzzy, maybe some other store is better for you. If you want expert advice, prompt repair or parts and good old fashion service, this is where I'd go. BTW, there's prices on lawn equipment are pretty much the same as Home Depot on the same brand. All of the employees/owner have always been friendly and helpful. They are very convenient and have lots of odds and ends when I need them. They're also knowledgable in power equipment, including with diagnostics and repairs. Several years ago, I needed a few screws and I didn't have cash on me, so they told me to come back another time with the money and they gave me the screws...honor system you'll only get from a local hardware store.
