Cove Cay is essentially my "home course" in central Clearwater. This course has amazing potential as it is set right on the Bay with stunning views on multiple holes. The staff is accommodating, though not necessarily friendly. The driving area is pinched between the first and tenth fairways but is adequate. The track of the course is ok on the front, winding through condos and dumping you out on hole 9 with the first great view of the day. The back 9 is much more fun to play with water on almost every hole, 2 par fives and 4 par threes. The course consistently struggles to be in great shape with the greens patchy and sandy quite often. However, when the course is in good shape it is one of my favorite courses to play. read more

You know how bad it has to be for me to write a review while still playing? I don't recommend playing here if you're a sub 12 handicap. 6 hour round of golf. Called the pro shop and they didn't offer any help. The halfway house was out of beer and the worker said it would be too much work for them to get anymore (walking across the street). Tee boxes are uglier than my mother in law. I had high hopes and unfortunately they were let down. I won't be coming back. I'll drive an extra 30 minutes to play anywhere else. read more

I am not a golfer so cannot review on playing on the course, but I can say the course is well maintained and its location is beautiful.... along the waters of Old Tampa Bay. Today was probably one of the worst days I've ever experienced on a golf course and i've golfed all over the world! After the 9th hole we stopped the cart to get a coffee and an older lady possibly in her late 60's early 70's stormed out of the clubhouse screaming at my wife and I bragging that she's the owner of the course, unsure of her name but I believe her name was Pat shiver or something along those lines. She was shouting in front of everyone saying to us don't ever drive across the tee boxes or the greens which we definitely didn't do. She said she just watched ME drive up to the green and then straight across the 9th green but the thing is I wasn't driving the cart up to the green it was my wife by herself and it was parked at the right hand side of the outside of the green not on the green as were the guys cart in front of us and behind us who were drinking / playing load music I might add in which I'm ok with but just saying. She obviously had a personal problem with us and I wish she could have at least addressed this in a civilized manner. She was extremely disrespectful when we arrived at the first tee also while asking for receipts to make sure we paid so to be totally honest it was then we felt like it was possibly a personal thing she had against us as my wife said she didn't feel comfortable playing this course but I said it will be fine not to worry. I've played many course's all over the world and played growing up in Ireland, you would never get treated like this on a course in Ireland or anywhere else in the world for that matter! I don't think I've ever came close to this type of disgusting behavior from anyone in my day to day life let alone on a course. Please avoid at all costs and please avoid the old lady that owns the place. My wife was so upset after the whole experience she refused to play the back nine! This was a truly awful experience and I'm going to see how I can take this further. The guy working in the pro shop was also rude - course was below average shape and extremely over priced! I'll never step foot in this place again but then again I feel like this was the owner's intention as we didn't feel welcome from start to finish. Interesting layout. The back nine was along the bay and had some great views. Fairly difficult. Especially with rental clubs (but they were Ping G430s which I liked ). The weather was cold for Florida. Upper 40s with 20+ mph winds made it even more difficult. Not in perfect condition but better than I expected after reading some of the other reviews. Plus, any golf in January is good golf. I would give it a "B" overall but I would definitely play there again. Hopefully in the summer. read more

if i could give less than one star, i would. be very very very careful before moving here, or buying a condo here. after the hurricane, management entered our condo without giving us written or verbal notice, changed the locks to our condo, and left our door unlocked with no key or written or verbal notice. talk about an invasion of privacy. management claimed to be "checking for water damage" ... but no notice given, and they entered our condo without our permission. and now they're trying to justify their actions saying "they are within their rights." rest assured, this matter will not be taken lightly. i strongly urge you to stay far far far away from this place. read more

Love this beautiful golf course located on the water with spectacular views of Tampa Bay and the the local bridges. They just got new golf carts with very comfortable cushions and the course is always in good condition, especially for the $50 price you pay for 18 holes with a cart. There is a beverage cart that drives around with beers, alcohol, drinks, and snacks. The best way to play this course is to stay safe off the tee box, as it is not entirely driver-friendly. You'll score well here as long as you're not in the numerous hazards. I shot an 87 yesterday - not my best striking. You'll love this golf course any day of the week. A must-go track in the Tampa area! read more

Arrive for a ten o'clock tee time and went off on time. After dealing with Mr. Rude taking my money, Starter John, a pleasant and very competent starter at that., was a nice change of personalities. Had to quit our 4.5 hour round after hole 16. Pace was slow as a snail. Nice layout difficult with a lot of bunkers and water. This is a gem of a golf course. You can teel there has been considerable investment in bringing it to this level and there appears to be more to come. The overall conditions are as good as any other public course in the area with the exception of Seminole Lake and their unfair advantage of Paspalum fairways/greens, which are the envy of every other course in the area. Overall: -6/10, practice area - pretty small but the mats are new -7/10, layout - one of the tightest around, but very playable since everything is well-manicured, nearly always making the penalty a punch out, versus lost ball. Lots of water and the back 9 is brutally hard when there is wind. Ends with a par 3, which is universally despised, but unavoidable in some circumstances. -8/10, tee boxes - in great shape -9/10, fairways - just about as good as any you will find -7/10, greens - when I was there yesterday they had just been verti-cut and were pretty shaggy/grainy/slow. I'd love to try them in 2 weeks on the weekend. -9/10, staff. Everyone was insanely nice and helpful. The female pro inside was a pleasure to talk with. I will try this course again and suggest others do not sleep on it. read more

Worst course to play. If you enjoy bad attitudes, rough fairways, and greens, and the majority of this course smelling like a sewer, then this is the place for you. However, if you're looking for a well-maintained facility with friendly staff, I would recommend avoiding this course. The owner seems to struggle with hiring the right people to run and maintain the place. Additionally, the marshal's lack of attentiveness can be frustrating. The trash cans are not even properly maintained, and there is trash everywhere, including cigarettes and animal poop all over the greens. read more

Very difficult course. Narrow fairways and lots of hi rough. I'm a pretty good golfer and I lost five golf balls in the hi rough. Fairways grass is minimal and what there is is cut very short. My partner and I felt like quitting on the 5th hole. Not any fun. read more

Golfer just visiting Clearwater area for first time in late September 2021. Very nice course. Driving range was good (plenty of targets to aim for). Price was fair for all items ( range and course). Pro Shop person was great (I wish I could remember the young lads name). I wanted to play the back nine (for the views) and he helped fit me between two large groups. Course condition was good. Tee boxes were great. Some swampy area outside of fairways (expected due to recent rain). I only had issue with one small bad surface on a green. Based on overall experience, I will come back to this course. read more

This was my first time ever playing golf, but my husband has played in Hawaii on the famous Kapalua course and he said he would rate this one 4 stars. The greens were maintained well, the beer girl came around 3x during our 18 holes, the pace was good, the golf carts were nice, and the views of Tampa bay were beautiful. For the 2 of us, including the cart- it cost $60. But if we had played earlier in the day, we could have played at half the price. Overall, for being my first game, I found it to be an enjoyable time- even if at times it was reminiscent of Easter Egg hunting when I lost my balls. We will definitely be back. read more

A great golf community. The new owners, Pat and Bill Shriver have done a tremendous job in making great improvements in the fairways and greens. This course is open to the public. I would recommend calling the golf shop for tee times. It gets a lot of play. Don't look at the score card and reach the conclusion it is an easy course. It is far from easy. Pick your own tee boxes. It has lots of traps and water on 15 holes. The front side is tight and you need to hit it straight. The back side is more open and offers three par 3's. The greens are undulating and very quick. Lessons are provided for all ages and gender. Pat and Bill are great teachers. After the round, visit the Bayview Pub. It has large variety of drinks and delicious food. It has a beautiful setting looking over Tampa Bay. I could sit there all afternoon. read more

First let me say we are not experienced golfers but we've golfed on a few courses. We came with teenagers while on vacation and had a great time! Everyone was very friendly and helpful - especially the guys getting the rental clubs and carts. The course was very pretty and had a nice variety of holes - some short, some over water, some curved. Some of the greens weren't great but nothing too terrible. I was disappointed that the back 9 were by the bay - we only played the front 9 so we ended right when the best scenery was starting. From the Midwest so wanted to play by the water. Maybe next time we'll do all 18. read more

Golfed here today because it claims it's on the water and it was only $15 at a certain time for some reason. My friend and I go to tee off and we don't hit them too good. We hit about two balls each and then the man working behind the desk of the pro shop comes out and asked what our handicaps were. We've both have played golf before and have even held memberships at a golf course before but we tell him we're not sure. He starts telling us that the black tees we hit from are challenging and based on what he saw he recommends we hit from the white tees. I found that very rude and embarrassing considering there were other golfers around and that this man also watched us from inside the pro shop and left the pro shop just to tell us that. Based off that comment alone he lost two customers. We say yeah ok and don't let it bother us. We saw maybe 2 black tee boxes that would've been challenging. I ended hitting several drives close to 300 yards as well. I felt like I was playing Plinko on the Price is Right every time I went to put because there were holes in every single green. You got it straight, and it ends up going left and right and left and right. Maintenance is normal on a course, but every place I have played at has discounted their rates and even put a notice on their website when they do so. Cove cay did nothing. It can't be said that our tee time was $15 do to this. Even if it was, it was the only $15 tee time (every other one was $30), and they didn't say anything on their site. Will I come back? No. Why? Because I did not like the comment that was made to my friend and I about how the pro shop employee was watching us and based of that he recommends we hit the closer tee box. read more

Avoid. Showed up for a 10:36 tee time at 10:10. There were 40 carts lined up waiting on the first tee. "Starter" had zero control. There were people driving out to random holes to avoid getting backed up on the first tee. By 11:00 we made the decision to bail because we were still 30 minutes out. They were taking tee times every 6 minutes. On top of that, the "rental set" I paid $30 for was a bunch of left behind misfit and horrible clubs. I would avoid this place like the plague read more

The greens are horrible. That is all you need to know. The course is one of the tightest course and tests your accuracy off the tee. It is a short course but very challenging. The scenery on the back 9 once you get there is beautiful, as it opens up to the bay. I used to play here frequently but the greens have been bad every time I've played recently. Bumpy and sandy, don't think you can call them "greens". There was no starter on this packed day and players left to figure out there start times and pair up. Pace of play was super slow as I saw a group of 5 people. This is again due to the lack of no starter. This course has potential to be a real gem, however the slow play and horrible green conditions make it really not enjoyable. I may have played my last 18 at this course. read more

Maybe there is a reason the grass is so poor, spotty and sparse, especially on the front nine. The back was better. The bare greens rather than tight mowing had them running 12+ on the stimp meter, in my opinion. The layout is challenge enough without adding poor conditions. I play Cove Cay pretty regularly, and pretty regularly, the conditions of the course are not up to par with most of the other courses in the area. The layout can be fun and there are some nice views along the back 9, but for the price, I would just go elsewhere. read more

We turned in our scorecard for a free draft beer at the bar, and it was awesome. The choices of beer are somewhat limited, but after a round of golf any domestic beer tastes good! The kitchen was about to close, and I asked for a hotdog. I had a choice between a "bar dog" or the hotdog from the kitchen, which is supposedly bigger. I decided to take a chance on the bar dog, and it was AWESOME. I was expecting some smallish cheap no-brand hotdog, and instead I am pretty sure it was an all beef kosher dog cooked to perfection... and that was the bar dog!! I was floored. I've been at Cove Cay since March 3 and I am not a golfer however since I'm hear til the end of April and next winter I figured I should try it out; I am currently taking lessons with Pat Shriver the pro/manager she is excellent!! She is very patient and a great teacher. I look forward to more lessons and trying to play golf here!! I have also eaten in the restaurant here at Cove Cay and the food has been excellent and the staff are all very friendly and the views from the room are amazing! The room had been updated and looks great. A lot of hard work has gone into that area and it shows. I had my family here this week and they loved it too! read more

Wow....the worst cow pasture ever (and that's just the tee boxes), I couldn't believe that the upkeep was this bad and we haven't tee'd off yet, too pay $70.00 which is a freak'n joke, around the greens there's standing water(?), the greens themselves are just as bad as thee tee boxes patches here and there, ya know apparently the folk who post some of their comments claiming the course is outstanding and worth the money either work there or were in a shotgun tournament and never played on a real golf course with Tee Boxes and Compete Greens, we could not wait too depart from this place the cart path are horrible and the have the nerves too have cart path only on several holes when the cart path is all jack up....do yourselves a solid and stay away, it's not worth it trust but then go ahead and try it....I'll be reading your review next, be honest though.... read more
