What exactly is this thing?…read more I don't think anyone really knows. I came during the daytime and could see a bunch of shiny red things in a huge pile. There doesn't seem to be any organization to their placements except to heap them up in a tapered manner. It is 20 feet tall. The red fiberglass sculpture sits on an aluminum base. This sculpture was installed in 2008. John McEnroe is the artist & sculptor. All these little bags were made using nylons filled with sand, then coated with resin. The sand was then drained out of the nylons and this is what you are left with, a "candy" shell. A hollowed sculpture. This process reminds me of Papier-mâché, in a way. Inside there are fluorescent lights. I should have gone at night to see what it looks like when it is lit up! You can see this from I-25 or walk across the Highland Street Bridge. I saw this thing twice, first time was intentional, the second time, I was going to the nearby doughnut shop. I walked on both parts of the Highland Bridge. I came to see it and left not knowing what I saw! Art is often abstract and thought provoking. I'm sure I'll inadvertently pass by this again in my ventures around Denver.

On the way driving in or out of the Denver airport, you can see the 30-foot tall blue rearing-horse…read moresculpture called Blucifer. It's between the incoming and outgoing lanes of Peña Blvd, where it turns from east-west to north-south. But right there, you cant pull over, or even slow down. The closest drive is the ramp from southbound Peña to northbound, but that ramp was closed when we were there. From further away, to get a full front-view, find the curve south of Peña on 75th Av at Harry B Combs Pkwy or near the UPS center at Robertsdale St. It's not a busy road, so you can pull over briefly. You can also get a nice profile-view from the curve on 78th Av north of Peña. There must be a great view from the permit-only parking lot at that curve. After dark, the statue's eye glow a burning red! We were there during the day this time. (Summer 2026). But even a daytime drive-by on Peña Blvd is pretty cool.

I mean, how could you NOT love a ginormous blue mustang statue rearing up with piercing red laser eyes? Makes for really great scenes at night with some clouds in the skies nearby too. A little bit of an eerie tidbit, but the creator of the piece, Luis Jiménez, was tragically killed when a piece of it fell on him in 2006, severing a leg artery, causing him to bleed to death on the floor. It allegedly unnerves some locals but as a certified forced to travel weird girl, it's neat! Just don't look between the legs, allegedly it's super veiny and detailed... I found a cute reusable recycled tote bag at the Denver airport with a chibi Blucifer on it, so merch does exist too!

This mural is on the side of the Star Bar, overlooking its parking lot. It was commissioned by with…read moreNaked Grouse Whisky and the Star Bar and is the work of Cody Kuehl who got help from the community due to a short turnaround time. The mural measures 19 and a half feet by 19 and a half feet and only runs about half the length of the full wall. The mural depicts a cowboy on a horse while it appears he is looking at the mural's viewer. You will see a silhouette of a cowboy in the background and a nod to the mural's sponsors with a big Star Bar logo in the upper right corner and a case of Naked Grouse Whisky strapped to the horses back. By the look of the size of each sponsor's image, Star Bar provided most of the funding for the mural. You may be able to get a parking spot in the lot the mural overlooks to get out and take a closer look. There is also metered street parking within a reasonable walking distance from the mural as well. Not only does the mural serve as an advertisement for Star Bar and Naked Grouse Whisky, but it also has a public service announcement to drink responsibility. The artwork is very detailed and nice. Kuehl is very talented and specializes in old western paintings. The detail that he uses in his paintings is simply amazing. As with most murals that I have visited and reviewed, this is probably not a very long stop. I was there less than 5 minutes. With that being said, you may want to consider planning out additional stops at many of the other attractions in the area, or making this stop part of a larger itinerary to maximize your time and trip.

Artists Jennifer Lupien and Sara Mayo worked together to merge images of people into a "heart" overcoming the "walls" that divide us. The bending figures represent the word "resilient." The heads that meet represent the word "together." According to the artists, by working together and embracing different perspectives, we can overcome many obstacles. Interest part of a series of sculptures scattered along the outdoor 16th Street Mall.

This just looks like a bunch of wood. Get off at the A Line station at the airport. It doesn't take long to look it. This is simple. It looks like a bunch of wood planks. This kind of looks like rays of sunshine. I'm not sure if that's what this is supposed to be. That would be a good meaning. It adds to the massive amount of public art. It makes you wonder about it. This often gets overlooked so give it a good look when you get off a train.

Umi is a large sculpture that is two-stories tall! She is constructed using steel, wood and glass…read morefiber-reinforced concrete. She mostly consists of tree roots which tie her from the head to the ground. Her belly is like a womb, which you are encouraged to stand or sit inside. Umi means "Mother" in Arabic and this sculpture esteems motherhood and Mother Nature. Umi is one of five sculptures in Popper's "The Human Nature" exhibit commissioned by the Morton Arboretum outside Chicago. Umi was dismantled and brought here from Chicago and then reassembled by Daniel Popper onsite. There was no plaque or stone describing the sculpture. This sculpture was created by South African artist Daniel Popper. He & his wife were once Colorado residents. Umi was inspired by the concept of "Gaia," the Greek goddess of Earth. Also, there's no sign telling you to keep off. I can imagine curious children trying to climb up her roots! I came out to this new housing development called The Aurora Highlands to see this sculpture. Umi is located in what looks like a desolate dirt field right now. Aurora Highlands Pkwy has two separate roads that runs along both long sides of this field are one way roads. There's a bridge at E. 38th Pkwy that takes you to the other road to take you back out. You will see her here. Throughout the 2-mile length of Hogan Park at Highlands Creek, there will be more than 20 art installations here in the future, brought to you by Art In The Park! There is no real place to park. Since this immediate area had very little traffic, I briefly parked on the side of Aurora Highlands Pkwy heading back towards Main St. I got out and walked down the embankment of the park to go see Umi. When this neighborhood has more residents & traffic, I wouldn't recommend parking here at all! It seems like this sculpture is mostly to be admired & appreciated by the people who live nearby rather than just anyone who wants to come see her. There are sidewalks throughout, which makes it convenient for the neighbors to either walk over or ride bikes. I'm glad I got to come take a look! She probably looks really pretty today with the light snowfall on her. When I came yesterday, the sun was lower in the sky and made for a beautiful silhouetted picture!

This mural is the 50th mural created by Rise Above Colorado, an organization that empowers teens…read morethrough action. They have positive murals all across the state. The group's hope is that they can empower teens to make healthy connections, decisions, changes in their community. It is a colorful mural that simply reads "Rise Above" and was completed in August 2022. Pat Milbery led the project and got assistance from community members and teen volunteers. The mural is nice and 3D. If you look closely, you will see that the words "Rise Above" are painted to look like stairs. You can really see the effect. The purpose of the mural was simple to provide inspiration. One of the teens involved in the mural project said she hopes it offers a mood boost. It is a simple mural with a simple message. Considering that the mural was painted by many people that did not have any experience with painting them, the art work is nice. The colors and vivid and just pop out at you. The mural is on the side of the Yoga Center of Denver and there is some parking available right in front of it, so it is easy to park and get a closer look. Anyway, as with most murals that I have visited and reviewed, this is probably not a very long stop. I was there less than 5 minutes. With that being said, you may want to consider planning out additional stops at many of the other attractions in the area, or making this stop part of a larger itinerary to maximize your time and trip.
