Summary: good food, friendly staff, nice location. We were looking for something a bit different within a reasonable drive of our hotel during a trip to Calgary. Found this place on yelp and decided to check it out. The location is in this nice walkable shopping center where we were able to pick up some other things for our trip. The staff was friendly and walked us through the menu and sides as it was a little slow when we got there. The food came out quick and was really good. I like, what we in the US call a "French dip", but in French speaking places seems to just be called a "beef dip". Their sign said it was the best beef dip in Calgary, and it was really good. The sides were also quite good. My kids got the kids meals and liked them as well. All in all a good spot. read more

As a tired American rolling into Calgary, I wanted something reasonable quick and yummy. I prefer small businesses because they just seem more personal and better somehow. Anyway, this place ticked all my boxes! My first visit was the dip sandwich. Omg! Heaven on a bun! No gristle or fat, just delicious tender beef! The Au Jus was fantastic. Don't get me started on the bread...Add a little horseradish aioli and woohoo! Tonight, I went for the beef and cheese-another winner! The staff recommended their favs-sorry nice guy who's name I didn't get-and they hit the spot. I just moved in to the neighbourhood and on the evening that I moved in I explored this area and found this cute locally owned restaurant. My boyfriend and I decided to go here for dinner and I am so glad I did because it was delicious. They said all their beef is local and everything is home made. They have one menu for their "beef" things and the oath half of the menu is for the "smoked beef" dishes. I had a smoked beef sandwich. Other things they have are a steak and cheese sandwich, beef dips, etc. For sides they have homemade coleslaw, potato salad and bbq beans. The portions are huge and the onions that come on here are great but if you don't like onions that much I would tell them to only out half the amount of onions that they normally would on. Went to San Antonio this past winter and this place reminds me of Texas BBQ shacks so much! Cannot wait to eat here more! read more

I was told this was the best place in the city for a beef sandwich, sorry to say it was way overrated. I had the cowtown cheese steak as recommended by the person working there. The beef didn't have much seasoning but it was very tender and you can tell it was quality grade beef. The sandwich was overloaded with too much cheese that the beef which is supposed to be the star of this sandwich, did not shine through, the caramelized onion and peppers helped cut some of the richness but the cheese sauce or whatever it was was just overkill. It was a very generous portion but it just wasn't my jam. For $13 for a large sandwich, you will definitely have leftovers, unfortunately, about an hour after eating, I couldn't find a toilet fast enough, my gut did not like what went in at all and needed to get it out FAST. I am positive it was the excessive cheese because there was just so much and it was a big gloopy mess that literally fell out of the sandwich. I like the simplicity of the menu, just a few items and the no frills ordering draws me to places like this, and I love trying out new non-chain, mom and pop places. Unfortunately Cowtown fell a little flat for me, great potential but it def could use a revamp of the menu and a good scrub down as the place looked a little dingy. 2.5 stars for using great quality beef and decent sized portions. read more

I really liked this place when the owner was around. The past few times I've come here, he hasn't been around. My son and I came here yesterday, and the place was empty. We shared a large sized beef dip. My issue that I had today wasn't related to the food, but rather the service. I felt like there was indifference from the lady working behind the counter. It's not like she wasn't friendly, rather she was more like she didn't want to be there. I observed her watching the big screen t.v. and her phone more then focusing on us(the customers). After we were finished our sandwich, we cleaned up our table and trays. I said thank-you to her on my way out. She replied "thanks guys" without even looking up and away from her phone. I certainly felt under appreciated. In my opinion, the problem I have with businesses in general is the lack of appreciation. They have to remember who is paying their wages. It's us the customer. Without customers, it would be hard to make money and pay your employees and grow your business. read more

I discovered Cowtown Beef Shack this past summer as a friend of mine is absolutely obsessed with beef dips and she said that Cowtown legit has the best beef dip ever. Soo....after the dog park, we headed over. Inside, its a cute little cozy place with a couple tables and some western decorations and in the summer time they have small tables outside. The menu is on the back wall, they have a handful of smoked meat options: pulled pork, smoked brisket, BBQ beef, beef cheddar, beef dip and only couple side options: potato salad, coleslaw. A cool option is that and if you weren't feelin' bread you could order the meat by ounce and mix it up! Add cheese, sauce or none which is nice if you're trying to eat cleaner. MJ knew she wanted the beef dip and of course I had to try it as well - along with a side of coleslaw. The guys up front were super friendly and fast with our orders. We decided to sit outside to keep the pup company while we ate. The beef dip came with fresh roasted beef, onions, Provolone cheese and Au Jus for dipping. The bun that came with the beef dip was soft and clearly fresh while the meat and melted was just soooo succulent and melt in your mouth - DEEEEELICIOUS! The bread soaked up the au jus for the perfect combination. Heaven. The coleslaw side was fresh and light....everything was just perfect together. Fresh local ingredients, soft baked fresh buns, succulent AAA Alberta beef and AB cheese.....no processed or preserved ingredients - WHAT MORE CAN YOU ASK FOR!?! The best!!!!! The only possible con is that if you live in the north, McKenzie Towne is quite the drive but I'd say its worth it! BUT! NOT FOR LONG! We went to the Bragg Creek location on Saturday. Read reviews ahead of time so I had high expectations. I ordered a large sandwich but when it arrived it was the small ...not a huge deal and because of the quality of the sandwich I was actually glad it was the small size. The sandwich had dry way overcooked beef and was stuffed with uncooked onions. Au jus might well have been warm water....absolutely no flavour and all it added to the sandwich was to make the dry beef wet and the bun soggy. Complete disaster....what a disappointment.... The menu is simple: beef and pork sandwiches offered with sides including slaw, beans and potato salad. On this visit, I shared two sandwiches: the beef dip and the cowtown cheesesteak along with the slaw and the house special side. The beef dip was piled high with tender beef. The rich beef and cheese were perfectly offset by the spicy horseradish spread. The cheesesteak was also generously topped with lots of meat and a creamy cheese sauce. The slaw is on the sweeter side as it includes dried cranberries. The house side combo was fun, being a mix of cold creamy potato salad and hot sweet baked beans. I enjoy the food here but sometimes get frustrated because they will have a take out order of 40 sandwiches they make on the line in front of all of the people waiting to order. They should consider a different system that doesn't require walk in guests to wait for large take out orders to be prepared first. So happy to see that this place is so close to home! Had the small beef dip for lunch and it was delicious! Brioche bun topped with a generous amount of shaved beef that was juicy, tender, tasty, delicious!! Also had horseradish and mustard along with the jus which worked perfectly with this sandwich. I loved how spongy the bun was to soak up the jus perfectly without being too thick. My date had the large BBQ beef which was also delicious and he loved it. This place's sandy game is pretty much as good as it gets. I'm relatively certain that there was a good 4/5th's of a cow on the beef dip. It tasted like Beef Jesus came down out of the sky and made this holy creation himself. I would have believed that too, If i hadn't seen the girl behind the counter make it with her own two hands. She may have not been beef jesus, but she was definitely a close second. Maybe a Beef Mary, except blonde. Totally the opposite of dry, I would say moist but that word is filth, and fresh tasting. The "Au Jus" was good enough to drink on it's own, I tested that.
