Surprisingly, the best margarita of my life was from Creme and not a Mexican restaurant! The owner and her employees take customer service seriously and are proud of their food and drinks. So disappointed. Save your money get dessert somewhere else. Yes, the place is "cool, trendy, hip" but I would not go back. I ordered bread pudding and the dark chocolate torte. First, the desserts are way over priced my bread pudding ($9) was so small (about the size of a small brownie) and it was the worst bread pudding I have ever had!!!! I am not exaggerating. I could not even cut into it with my fork, I had to pick it up and try to bite into it (it was so hard). Maybe, it just happened to be a bad piece, but why would the kitchen serve it because if it was hard for me to cut, I know it had to be hard for them to cut it. : ( Second, the chocolate torte was good, however it was good for 4 bites, it was tiny (slightly bigger than a petit four). For $10 I expect it to knock my socks off and be bigger than 4 bites, not even enough to share. I don't mind paying for quality, but this was a big disappointment. This is a fairly well-known cupcake shop. When we went looking for a separate dessert place we mistakenly expected a dedicated bakery. We found much, much more. It's a more upscale dessert place that also happens to be open pretty late, so it's a natural place to go after you've been at a restaurant with less impressive dessert options (also if you want a place to linger with friends). We had a little trouble finding it after dark, as the sign isn't well-lit and the lighting inside is a bit dim (it creates a nice atmosphere once you're eating, though). There was much, more more there than cupcakes. Neither of us ended up with a cupcake. We ordered at the counter, but it looks like you can sit down and have your order taken, as well. The menu has desserts with suggested coffee and alcoholic drink pairings. We ended up ignoring those suggestions and went with a lava cake and tiramisu. They were both incredibly rich. I really recommend that anyone eating here take their time on their dessert--these aren't cupcakes that you can just wolf down in a few bites. These are desserts you linger over with delicate spoonfuls. My partner felt that the molten core of the lava cake was perhaps a bit too peanut-buttery. He said he felt like he was eating PB&J with chocolate bread. I say that's his problem because only crazy people don't like PB&J. The tiramisu, for the record, was the best I've ever had. It had a great, subtle rum flavor to it and perfect texture--I find other places often end up with soggy cakey mess. I would definitely order it again. read more

Stopped by this little place late Friday night. My friends and I had been up all day running around trying to get ready for a wedding and tired me a thrilled to be rewarded with booze and sweets! I got the almond champagne and chocolate cupcake. Both were delish! I was a little worried the almond champagne might taste really artificial but the flavor was subtle. You literally just had a hint of almond at the first sip and then it tasted more like bubbly after. Actually it tasted more like a sparkling cider a martinelli. It was also a little sweeter than most champagne and not super dry. The cupcake was delicious. I wish I had shared it because it was a little sweet. Of course this didn't stop me from eating it by myself. No regrets! The service was great- everyone was extremely friendly and helpful. The seating was a little more intimate. Theres some seating by the window and some round, high top tables. I wouldn't bring more than 4 people. We had 6 people so we had to put two round tables together. No big deal though! Nice selection. When I stopped in the case was full of cupcakes, cinnamon rolls and other delicious looking treats. I selected a six pack of cupcakes and headed home. I picked up the cupcakes around 1:30 in the afternoon. When we are the cupcakes around 7:00 that night the cupcakes were pretty dry. Not sure why. They looked moist but we're not. I've been here twice in the past few weeks. The first time, I got a delicious lava cake and a specialty martini they had of the night. Both were declicious. Looking back, I think the lava cake was missing some of the ingrediants they said were supposed to be on there. No cupcakes were in sight. The drink and the dessert set me back $20. I could have easily shared the dessert. Last night, they had a new "fall" menu. There were a lot less desserts to choose from. I had the sampler for $14 which included 3 different desserts. The chocolate torte with almond was delicious, the fried cake balls were ok, and lastly the cookie with ice cream was not worth it. My friend had the full size cookie with ice cream for $8. I guess I would think the cookie would be soft and warm but instead it was hard. In fact you couldn't cut it. They did have cupcakes but we were told it was dessert bar hours. When we left, a guy gave us a free cupcake since they were going to throw them out at the end of the night. Huh? I guess they are trying to get you to pay $8 to $10 for dessrt and not $3 for a cupcake. I love the concept but haven't been totally impressed with desserts. I am a Celiac and rarely am able to indulge in cupcakes. The vanilla and the cinnamon GF cupcakes were spectacular! The frosting was like silk. It has been several hours since I enjoyed my cupcakes and still no gluten issues. This place is definitely the place for sweet GF treats in the Des Moines IA area! So very glad that I came back!! They say everyone deserves a second chance. That should apply to cup cakeries as well. My first visit to Creme was almost two years ago, shortly after they had appeared on Cup Cake Wars. I think that knowledge may have over increased my expectations because I left, somewhat disappointed. I had tried a simple vanilla cup cake with vanilla frosting. The cake itself was dry and sadly the frosting, usually my favorite part, was...blah. So blah, that I have not felt compelled to venture back. Until today... Wow! Am I ever glad I did. With time to kill before meeting up with a friend...and, having missed lunch, it caught my eye and now my stomach. Not leaving anything to chance I went for a chocolate cupcake with chocolate frosting, of course. I took my first bite feeling slightly nervous and hoping that this cute little cupcakery could redeem itself. Ladies and gentlemen, it was heavenly. Not too rich...and the cake...so yummy, you could eat it without the frosting but why would you?!?! The frosting was smooth and sweet and...ohhh-so-good! My husband and I came together for dessert after our anniversary dinner. It's quite tricky to find a parking spot. You enter, walk up to the counter and receive a menu,find a table and then they take your order. We took our order to go, but ordered a "mixed" box of different flavors so we could sample several different ones. A few were a little dry, but overall very delicious and such different and fun combinations.The drink + dessert pairing menu is helpful. I had come into town to visit friends and one of them had shared a recent article about the owner and its impending grand opening. We went the first night in town (Saturday) and the place was packed, ooooooo ~ good sign.....the Creme bar had a good vibe & look, mmmmmmm ~ really good sign....finally the menu selections were diverse and each dessert offered a beverage pairing.....excellent sign! First issue was that there were NO CUPCAKES at night. They said they only serve what is left over from the day (eeww). I decided on the Ingersoll Apple Crisp with cheddar and some kind of whiskey martini. My friends ordered the gluten free flourless (duh) cake and lastly the Smore's dessert along with the suggested beverage pairing. I have to say the styling of the desserts showed good effort but the desserts themselves....and I hate to say this but OMG they were not good at all, quite awful to be honest. I was presented with the apple crisp which was far more crisp than apple and on top were 3 slices of cheese, the top one was a mild yellow cheddar. Unfortunately it had appeared to have been sitting out for a few hours ~ sweating (oil film), discolored and had mold on it. When I pointed it out to the waiter, he quickly ushered it away and said he would take care of it. He returned a moment later explaining that the chef assured him/me that the cheese was delivered fresh that day and the mold was intentionally left. I would understand if it was a blue vein type cheese, but not frickin' cheddar! It also had a type of unsweetened cheesecake with thyme along with a believe was a pinot noir glaze, toasted pistachios and finally a mound of tomato jam. Yep, tomato jam. Although the thyme cheesecake had perfect texture, it needed a sweet element, maybe some honey but not the tomato jam. This dessert was so disjointed I just didn't enjoy it. The biggest failure was the Smores which had crushed up graham crackers, lemon ice cream, mint marshmallows and chocolate sauce. How in the world did this 'pairing' occur? Unfortunately it was inedible and was left untouched. 2 of the 3 cocktails were tasty and that appeared to be the biggest draw that night....not the desserts. I know they just opened and I hope they will work on the menu otherwise I can't imagine this place succeeding as a dessert destination. Thanks but no thanks. read more

I was looking for something sweet to round out my first full day in Iowa and the minute I stepped in the door, I knew we made a good choice. The delicious smells of baked desserts and coffee were intoxicating! I was a little confused by the process however. We found a seat right away but waited awhile before someone helped us, they were slammed though so that's not a big deal. Once we were helped the service was very friendly. But there wasn't a clear dessert menu, more of a very broad drink menu and a few desserts, plus more if you wandered to the display (which I obviously did!). I ordered the special: carrot cake pineapple upside down cake with the suggested pairing of Cuban Creme (iced drink with pineapple and... Coconut? Whatever it was, I loved it!). My boyfriend had the peanut butter chocolate molten cake and a Black Russian. I think I liked his dessert more but they were both divine. The only reason for the 4 stars is the confusion I felt when ordering... A more organized menu or presentation would have helped me as a newcomer but the food was great and I'll definitely be back! read more

Ive had cupcakes and a lemon bar from here. I had the vegan chocolate cupcake and it was dry and flavorless. I make better. I also had the samoa cupcake, and it tasted a bit like a samoa cookie, but more flavor could definitely be added, and maybe more texture. I also had the lemon bar, but it is wayyyyyy too sweet. I rather eat the lemon bars at Gateway Market. Also one time I went while it was "open" around 11:30 and the door said be right back at 12pm. Didn't you open at 11? It's hard to find a place that has worthwhile gluten free cupcakes, but I'm always willing to try a new place out. It has a cute atmosphere, even has a bar, and is friendly for all ages upon entering. What made me hesitant was the attitude the person working had. My friends and I were excited to try the treats, we were chatting and pointing out different things as this was our first time there. All good things, so it was clear we were going to buy something and weren't loitering. The person working was rude and rushed us to make our decision. Let me make it clear that there was no line, it was just us in there. She interrupted us and seemingly wanted us to get out of there as quick as possible. I got my cupcake, with a fair price. $3.50 for a gluten free cupcake, which I would say is incredibly well priced. I opened my box and immediately saw two hairs in my cupcake. One half in the frosting, one laying on top. The lady working had disappeared otherwise I would have requested a new one, and, even if she had been there, her attitude would have kept me from asking anyway. She acted as if customers were a chore to rush through. So I ate my cupcake, and this is the only reason I'm rating above one star. That cupcake was delicious. It wasn't dry and didn't hold that artificial taste that I find most gluten free treats have. The frosting was perfect, and the cake itself was superb. Though the hairs in my food, and the rude employee will keep me from returning. read more

Creme is amazing!!! They made my wedding cake a few years ago, it was beautiful - just what I wanted. And it was incredibly delicious, with different flavored tiers. This weekend they made a smash cake for my daughter's first birthday, and completely exceeded my already high expectations. The cake was absolutely stunning. Everyone was asking where we got it. The outside looked like a giant cupcake - everyone thought there was a giant gold foil wrapper on it but it was actually ALL edible frosting, it was incredible. The top was pink rosettes with gold flakes sprinkled on top. The inside was delicious, vanilla cake with strawberry filling. They also made 3 dozen mini cupcakes for us, which were a big hit. Fun after dinner spot. I had cheesecake: light, delicious. Added a raspberry glaze. Hubby had dessert of the month: rustic peach tart. Wonderful. Came with a scoop of ice cream. My decaf sea salt caramel mocha latte was yummy! Watched the barista make a couple of coffee drinks that she rimmed in sugar(?), poured alcohol into and lit on fire. She then sprinkled cinnamon in which flashed the fire, then topped with coffee and whipped cream which we also watched her make. This place is such a gem. We came here for their late night happy hour on the recommendation of a local. We tried a dessert sampler with three different desserts, paired with a sparkling wine and the comfort coffee. I did not have high hopes for the fried cake balls, but they ended up being the dessert we loved most. The comfort coffee was really interesting (in a good way). Our waitress was extremely patient (I can be particularly indecisive) and really took the time to answer our questions and make suggestions. Great place to grab a cupcake and a cocktail. But beware that there is no bartender until 5pm so no mid-afternoon mixers. Their cupcake selection is great and everyone of them that I have tried have been very tasty. They also have a great specialty dessert menu (brownies, tarts, pies, etc.) as well as a specialty drink menu. They also do custom cakes upon request. I love their donuts, but those are the only things they don't make in the store (they buy them from someplace else, or at least that's what the counter person told me). Maple bacon is fantastic, and so is the Oreo one. The cupcakes, on the other hand, are pretty disappointing, in my opinion. They have fancy names and descriptions, but they all tasted basically the same and most of the combinations are played out. I'm sure that hipsters find them exciting, but red velvet cupcakes are just chocolate cupcakes with red food coloring, so to charge $3 for one is quite the scheme!
