Wowwww! First time visiting and first experience with purchasing a Tres Leches cake here. Absolutely amazing. I've had tres leches cakes from Mexican restaurants and this one was very comparable to our favorite restaurants. I couldn't believe how fast I was able to get a cake. I made a call at 2pm and was able to pick up by 5:30pm before they closed at 6pm. Excellent customer service and excellent tres leches cake. Spent $40 for a cake that serves 8-10 people. I didn't ask for a designed cake. Just plain white. I will definitely order here again and highly recommend. read more

Love, love, love Raquel's for their Tres Leches Cakes!! I've been coming here for years for their Tres Leches Cakes and I will continue to do so! It HAS been awhile since the last time I've been here due to Covid, but it's been like that for every other eating establishment for me. The service is always great here and the selection on single-serve cakes have vastly improved BUT make sure to get here a little early to grab a traditional Tres Leches with fruit. Pictures here is the "new-to-me" Bailey's Tres Leches Cake. Sorry, it's mostly eaten but it was so yummy! The Strawberry Flan was good too but I will always choose a Tres Leches cake over a Flan cake there. Their Tres Leches cakes aren't too sweet which is exactly how I like it. Make sure you try this place out for any of your celebration cakes! Their decorating for the cakes seems to have stepped up! But I never cared before because the cakes were delicious! dropped MLB at DSM going to CLT and needed a bite for the drive... was totally hoping for donuts or kolaches or polvorones mexicanos and such but got tacos instead... really hard to complain about such a turn of fortunes so I won't. Raquel's is a little snack shack sharing a building with a photo shop. they's got a couple of normal tables and high tops inside and all the whole world outside if you want to sit. ordered at the counter and a pair of tacos asada arrived shortly all hot and freshly made and delicious along with a pepper chock full of crazy hot something that looks like caramel but is most assuredly not :-) coffee is hot and fresh and flavory with just enough room on top for my upper lip. Perfect!! If you're near here be here ...and get a cupcake while you're in. read more

Not only do the cakes look great, they taste phenomenal. I could finish this whole cake myself. It's rich but light at the same time and not too sweet. We got a vanilla flan cake in the picture. Great service. This cake took less than a day to be ready. read more

Owned by Raquel Welch, rather than Racquel Darrian (I know her from the old days), this is an absolutely delightful Mexican Bakery in the little Latin neighbourhood to the west of the Capitol in Des Moines, IA. Situated in a part of town with some really awesome Latin food, this is probably my favourite little spot in the area. It's named after - and run by - a wonderful woman making homemade cakes and Mexican desserts and doing them really really well. Especially the Flan, which she told me she is famous for - and oh my goodness it was amazing. They also have a wonderful tres leches cake, and everything in the place is basically delicious - especially if you already like Mexican desserts, because this place does them very very well. Des Moines has some real food gems and some nice surprises, and this little area - and in particular this little family-owned Homestyle Mexican bakery - is the absolute epitome of how underrated and great and diverse the Des Moines food scene can be if you know where to look. Goodness gracious, get over here and dive into these magical tres leches! This place has large single serve desserts pre-packaged to go, so pick up flan, or tres leches or my favorite: Baileys tres leches - yup, tres leches cake in a bath of Baileys! Awesome!!! They make custom cakes that are magnificent - I've seen many people come in to pick up gloriously designed birthday cakes. Be a hero of the family and bring home desserts from here. They also make great tacos, tortas etc. Don't worry, the super friendly staff is bilingual. Always a joy to stop here for takeout, and always with dessert as well! read more

I've gotten her cakes for about a decade. Back in the day it was the only place to get a tres leches cake and even now that there are more options, I continue to get her tres leches cake because I've tried the rest and none are better. I love that the cake decorating has evolved over the years. So much so that I called on Raquel for my daughter's Sweet 16 cake this summer and showed her some ideas that went with the theme of baby blue, silver and stars. She created the cake in the photo which matched everything perfectly. Service is always friendly and timely and they have extra parking next to the bakery so there's a place to park even when it's crowded. They also sell Mexican food, smoothies and specialty teas, which I recommend as well, although I do not have photos. She sells various pasties and cakes, and flans and everything I've tried over the years has been delicious and well priced. I love her mocha flan cake and recommend it highly as well. read more

I ordered two cakes for a baby shower and was impressed. Tres leches cake and strawberry cake with flan on top. Cakes tasted delicious and were a hit at the shower. Both decorated beautifully with fruits. They take you order in advance and pay when you pick up. I highly recommend their cakes! read more

The frosting on the Bailey's tres leches cake was some of the best I've EVER had. Creamy, not too sweet, almost caramel-y, complemented by the crunch of walnuts. I thought the cake would taste alcoholic, but luckily no. It was luxurious perfection. Servers were fluent in both English and Spanish, so I felt less embarrassed about ordering. Not much room in the lot out front, but there is plenty of free parking just next door by Jose's taco truck. I wish I had room to try their tortas, which also looked delicious. I'll just have to come back to try them, and you should, too. read more

A very late review, but this place is amazing. They have the best tres leches cake. They were also very kind enough to take my order of a tres leches birthday cake on a very short notice and it was ready on time. And the cake was amazing!! It is a must go place for Tres leches cake. Raquel's Pastry in Des Moines has wonderful "Tres Leches" cake. It is so wonderfully moist and topped with fresh fruit. I stopped by just to see if they had any and was impressed by the tasty looking selections of products they have. It doesn't appear they have a wide variety, but what they do have is quality! read more

Kind of a hole in the wall place, but definitely a gem! Custom order cakes, some food items, a few individual size pastry items, churros, & drinks (including horchata). I ordered the flan, tres leches cake, & horchata - all very yummy!! Definitely worth stopping in! read more
