The beach was very clean, with a few options for shade and make-shift, barebones cabanas. We were fortunate to have a hotel that offered beach chairs and a cooler for us to take on beach trips. This made all our beach trips comfortable and on our budget. The water was shallow for quite a bit, and then got slightly deeper. Good for swimmers of all strengths. I would definitely recommend visiting this beach during your stay in Vieques.

But be careful! I'm not sure why we didn't see this at the other beaches we went to (Pata Prieta and La Chiva), but there were so many stingrays that came right up to this beach! Maybe it was just the time of the day (we were there around 5pm, when the tides were coming in), or we just didn't notice it at the other spots? I'm not sure, but we counted at least a half dozen coming in and swimming around in just fifteen minutes that we spent standing in the water. It put us off of wading in. A cool experience but a bit intimidating.

From that point on, it doesn't cost you anything unless you choose to spend money. It's a short walk from the parking lot to the beach. We had gotten there early, and decided to rent an umbrella and a pair of lounge chairs, which cost us $35 for the day. Considering we ended up spending nearly 7 hours on the beach, it was definitely worth the purchase price. The beach is gorgeous, and the water is rock free. It did get quite busy, but we actually enjoyed the people watching. There are vendors that walk up and down the beach, selling ice, creams and drinks, but there are also little Kioskos on the property that you can walk to easily to order hot food. At the one we visited, we got delicious slushy's, Pinchos, and empanadillas that were all delicious. We had a great time, and would absolutely go back in a heartbeat! When you leave the gated parking lot, you are literally around the corner from the Luquillo kioskos if you want to hit them up for shopping or dinner after your beach day. Seven Seas Beach was one of those for me. Coming from the mainland, it almost felt unfair how naturally beautiful this place was--clear water, palm trees, soft sand, and mountain scenery all blending together into one peaceful view. AMBIANCE Parking: There's a parking lot but there's parking on the road. I'd probably prefer parking on the road if you're going to leave as the beach closes (the line can get long) Seating: Plenty! Whether it's in the main beach or the hidden beach you got a lot of choices. Vibes: The area is a more calmer side of Puerto Rico. Fishing-town environment with local bars, seafood spots, and opportunities for bio tours. The main beach is really nice with with turquoise water, green palms, and views toward the surrounding landscape. There are a few kiosks setup if you do want to grab some food. If you're up for an adventure, coming from the main entrance, you go through a forest (enjoy the sights and sounds, like the coquis) for a good 30 minutes you can enjoy "playa escondido" a beautiful secluded beach with the common calm, shallow, and crystal clear waters but less human traffic and a better view of sunset. During our tour of Vieques beaches by scooter, this was our first stop. The beaches we went to…read morewere all east of Esperanza a few miles. For most of the trip you are on paved roads, but for Secret Beach (also known as Pata Prieta), we had to stray off the paved path---a good thing. The main dirt road wasn't too bad, but then we had to turn of this road on to a smaller dirt road. This one was a little more potholed, had quite a few big rocks on it, and steep at times. I maneuvered around the rocks like Han Solo on his Millennium Falcon in an astroid field. It was an adventure just getting to Secret Beach. The parking area is at the bottom of a steep stretch of road. The lot is primitive & fairly small. I've been told that you should leave your vehicle unlocked, so that if someone is going to beak into your car, they don't have to break the window----we had a scooter, so that wasn't an issue. From the parking lot, one walks around a signed gate, and takes a short stroll to the beach. Now given its namesake, I was picturing a totally empty beach, but we saw quite a few groups here. But it wasn't super crowded, and we were definitely able to plant ourselves on a nice patch of sand out of earshot of our neighbors. The beach really is nice in that it's a small "C-shaped" cove. The sand of the beach is white and soft. The waves are fairly small and break right on the beach. This place is your mental image of a tropical beach paradise. Swimming is nice here with not many rocks/coral to worry about. I noticed on a neighboring cove west that there were more rocks. This is where most of the snorkelers were. So yeah, I wouldn't say Secret Beach is a total secret, but I'd say it's definitely worth the rough road. A solid 4.5 stars.

It's unfortunate that from my experience, I felt I had been misinformed about Playa Negra. There was a portion of the beach that had the darker/black coloured sand. But to me, the majority of the beach was the regular colour of the sand in Vieques, and the water seemed a little rougher than along other parts of the island. What was beautiful was having a wild horse walk up to me to say hello when I first got to the beach! That was definitely the perk of my visit!

At the ferry terminal, you can get a taxi that will bring you here for about $15 or so. Once you arrive at the "Playa Negra" sign, there is a short hike through a swampy region to get to the actual beach. The entire beach is not covered with black sand, only portions of it - at least the day I visited. It was not crowded at all. It was very scenic and calm!

It was fun to see so many island horses along the drive, plus a Great Blue Heron and sand crabs. The coral and sea shells are abundant on this deserted beach in the most Western area of Vieques. The gnats are horrendous and they bite! I kept applying a generous amount of Deet free bug lotion and it helped keep them at bay. The water is refreshing and the brown sand is full of pebbles and shells. I suggest water shoes if you visit, as there are rockier and coral areas that are difficult to maneuver.
