The Westcott House had fallen into disrepair over the years, and was restored in 2005 by the local non profit Westcott House Foundation. The Foundation now owns the property and preserves it as a museum, which is open to the public for tours. Tour tickets can be purchased online. Our tour guide was fantastic. She had so much knowledge about the house, the architectural style and the Westcott family. The tour was scheduled for 90 minutes, but I think she could have shared info with us all day! The museum gift shop had some beautiful items. Parking is available on the street in front of the museum.

Attendees become paranormal investigators during the tour, given several tools to track paranormal activity (spiritual dowsing rods, and a ghost hunting meter that measures electric signals (as ghosts give off electric signals). We made about 4-5 different stops that are either haunted or have affiliation with death, and Devin helped the group communicate with ghosts during some of the stops, combining storytelling with interesting historical events in Napa. We had a combination of skeptics and believers in our group, including at least one witch. I, of course, came for the entertainment, getting to talk about serial killers, learn a bit about history, and also get in a few laughs as Devin brings the humor as well. I did learn some new things, such as the difference between a ghost and a spirit, possible origins of the terms "lobbying" and "pulling my leg", and that Cole's Chop House (where my bf and I had dinner earlier that day) was formerly a mortuary. We ended at the courthouse, not where we started the tour, with the story of the last public execution in California which took place here in Napa. Overall, we had a fun time, and it's an unconventional way to tour the streets of Napa, and definitely enjoyable if you like ghost stories.

This is a very worthwhile visit and one of the better curated museums that I've seen among the NPS…read morefacilities. And that is saying something because I think the collection of NPS museums are among the best around. This particular facility is located by the Wright Brothers 4th cycle shop in near-West Dayton. When we visited, there were a handful of opportunities to tour the small shop itself on the half hour through the middle of the day. This was with one of the NPS guides as an interpreter. The shop tour was only 20 - 30 minutes but provided an excellent overview of the history of the Brothers as their business ventures evolved and as they eventually moved toward aeronautics. The display also touches on the history of the bicycle and its place in American life at the close of 19th Century. This itself is an interesting subject to explore a bit. Note that registration for and commencement of the tour are in the Visitor Center. The museum in the main building is two floors and covers the lives of the Wrights as well as that of Paul Laurence Dunbar. The story of the Wrights is fascinating and their mechanical genius is well documented. The struggles with the patent and overcoming political obstinance within the US government is a part of the narrative most don't know. What particularly caught my attention was their discovery that the accepted physical constants of the day regarding drag coefficients, etc. were wrong and were impeding efforts toward successful flight by those in the field. This discovery and their subsequent corrective action gave them their leg up in being the first to advance flight. While science is by definition objective reality, sometimes humans interpret it incorrectly crossing the boundary between science and dogma. The claim of "scientific fact" always comes with potentially fallible interpretation and should always be questioned. It's hard to reverse a wrong path. Dunbar's life is an equally interesting story. A prolific writer who died far too early, his journey to get past the profound racial barriers of his day is one worth understanding. It is significant to ponder what could have been without the shackles of prejudice. His brilliance is clear from his writing and the volume of his production. A visit to this museum is time well spent. The lives of the Wrights, the history of flight, the state of the art in the area of mechanical devices in the late 19th century and the life of PL Dunbar are all intriguing subjects that are explored. You can easily spend 2 - 3 enjoyable hours here.

Of course we had great food and fun drinks. Chrissie takes the tour over and above. Suggesting here is a good restroom stop. This is a great place to grab a Drink in the DORA. She kept the pace relaxed but kept us on track. Overall a fun tour with interesting stops getting to know many of the fine dining restaurateurs and story of how and why they decided to open in Dayton. If you want a fun afternoon I highly recommend joining Chrissie for a tour. Chrissie really needs to plan a second tour I would buy tickets in a heart beat!

With…read moreonly 12 spots per tour, it's an intimate gathering in which people got to know each other a little. Chrissie did a wonderful job including everyone and making each of us feel welcome. The tour included 6 food/drink stops and a few bonus stops of interest along the way. It lasted about 3.5 hours and we walked around 2 miles total. Each of the restaurants told us a little about their establishment and then shared a delicious sampling of what they have to offer. Chrissie was a fantastic guide with a wealth of information about Dayton history as we walked. She kept us moving to keep on schedule but it never felt rushed. JAM started as just a summer venture, but hopefully they will decide to add dates this fall. We will definitely recommend them to friends.

"staying underground for days at a time. Often they would bring out Indian relics, which Turner packed in boxes and sent away. As the weeks passed, they became more and more enthusiastic about their work. Turner was apparently well satisfied with the results. At first they talked freely about their explorations, showing us maps Turner had made of the passages they had surveyed. But then a change occurred. No longer did Turner permit us to see his maps. His survey notes were kept under lock. When they talked about their work, the conversation became guarded. From that time forward, everything was secret. Ordinarily when men make a discovery, they are eager to let the world know about it. Why the secrecy? Floyd and Turner had undoubtedly discovered something worthwhile. This was evident from their actions and enthusiasm. It seemed that they should have been proud to show their discoveries to other people. But cavers such as Floyd and Edmund Turner are not ordinary people. A cave explorer goes through unbelievably difficult places, risking his life to reach some remote passage where no man has set foot before. And once in a lifetime, with luck, he makes a truly outstanding discovery. Perhaps it is a rare and beautiful formation. The remoteness adds to its beauty. It has never been seen by any human being; maybe no one should ever see it after him. He thinks of the commercialized caves, the crowds of tourists laughing, dropping candy wrappers and cigarette butts, looking for every opportunity to pick up a souvenir or scratch initials on the rocks. Is it worthwhile? Are people so important? There below ground, hidden and silent, hallowed by the absence of man, somehow things seem right as they are." You will tour a primitive cave, not one carved out with walkways by man. You will crawl and climb your way though while the guides explain and point out neat features throughout the cave. You will get dirty so bring a change of clothes and a trash bag! Definitely recommend for a more adventurous journey.
