I stayed at campsite T3 over Father's Day weekend with two friends in a tent. We had a really great time. The campsite is right on the water, which was beautiful. Highlights: -CLEAN bath houses, with running water--real showers and toilets that flush! -Firewood and fire starter kits sold on site -Dave--the owner, who was very chill about us arriving late at night. He also gave us directions to a fun swimming hole nearby. (Make sure you bring your swimsuit and ask him about the swimming hole--it was so nice after a long day of hiking!) -The location is fantastic: about a quarter mile away from the trailhead for the Crabtree Falls hike Overall, it was a really fabulous weekend. I can't wait to come back!
This was my family's second time staying at Crabtree Falls Campground. The owner, AJ, is super friendly, responsive, and helpful in reserving by phone and email. We stayed at campsites 30, 31, and 32, which are at one end of the campground and feel more secluded, farther away from the other campsites. This means your car is not right next to your site, but we didn't mind walking back and forth (slightly uphill, along a path); we recently bought a collapsible utility wagon that was super helpful in carrying big things to and from the site. The sites sit higher above the river, so it's a bit steep if you want to go down and enjoy the water, but you can do so carefully and it's well worth it. You will love sitting by your fire, listening to the rushing river and feeling like you're in the middle of nowhere, even though many luxuries like flush toilets, hot showers, and even a camp store are just steps away. No need to bring ice or firewood; the camp provides them at an added reasonable cost (but bring an axe to help break up the logs in case the wood is damp or fresh). Bring a grill-top for the firepit if you plan to cook. Keep in mind that the campsites are not very large; ask AJ when you book if your tent will fit. There's plenty to do in the area: Hike Crabtree Falls, taste beers at Devil's Backbone or Blue Mountain Breweries, enjoy ciders at Bold Rock, and next time we'll try the distilleries. Crabtree Falls is definitely my favorite campground in all of Virginia! read more

My husband & I have been staying here since our first anniversary in 2015. It's so quiet and the owners AJ (& Sue this time around) are so incredibly nice! We always stay in the cabins (which is dog friendly) and they are always clean and super cozy. We have only stayed during the fall since there is no A/C but I can tell you that during the cooler nights the base board heat keeps you very warm. The constant sound of the creek right outside your window is soothing and a great change from a busy life. There is absolutely NO cell service so be prepared for that. Some super sweet camp cats! We will be back for many many years to come! Thanks AJ and Family!! read more

The view of the creek is stunning. There's no service so you're really at peace with nature. Clean bathrooms, very friendly also! read more

What we saw was beautiful. We only made it 0.8 of the 1.7 miles First falls are just off the parking lot and are very accessible. After that... switchback straight up the side of the mountain Not for the weak of heart or the beginner. Falls we saw were beautiful and worth the almost 2 hour drive from Luray. Wear good sturdy shoes. This is not a hike for flip flops. Wish I could have gone further.... but 0.8 miles was it. read more

In a word: ENCHANTING. *** CFC is under new management, so consider that as you scan previous reviews. *** OH MY HEAVENS!! This campground is stunning, and the new owner, A.J., who took ownership a year ago and has been updating the grounds, told me he has plans to continue improving it once things get back to normal (I am writing the six months into the pandemic) so it's gonna be even better going forward. Hard to imagine improving on perfect. Crabtree Falls Campground is nestled along a pristine river that runs through mossy boulders, with gorgeous mature trees and faces a mountain side. We went in September, so the leaves were starting to change but it was still hot enough to swim. ... we had site T3, a carry-in tent site, and pitched our tent 20 feet from the water. ... We loved cooking over our charming rustic stone fire pit, and the soothing rush of water provided a meditative background hum and lulled us to sleep at night. The toilets & showers were clean and well maintained. The office was window-service only, due to the pandemic measures currently in place. I appreciate the system of having a map with the parking area and our site highlighted, very clearly marked, on the lower half of our parking pass. Firewood and ice available as needed, added to the bill at check out. If you are looking for rigorous hiking, Crabtree Falls just up the street from the campgrounds, is not to be missed. It is 1.7 miles of hiking alongside the largest vertical waterfall this side of the Mississippi, with a combination of interesting natural stone as well as man-made wooden and metal stair structures to aid your ascent. Stick with it and you'll be rewarded with a breathtaking view at the top. We will definitely return to this campground. We've been camping as a couple and as a family, for nearly 20 years up and down the East Coast, and no place we've stayed in any state compares to our satisfaction with Crabtree Falls Campground. read more

My husband and I just spent our two year anniversary renting a cabin here and they didn't disappoint. The owners are warm, funny, welcoming and they take pride in maintaining a beautiful and clean locale. We loved being able to get away from it all and experience what was a breathtaking and serene mini vacation. Our cabin was perfection, and it was so easy to remain comfortable and have a great time. The bathrooms we're AMAZING, the smelled great and were clean. The owners offered personal touches by sharing stories and their passion shows, the cabin was warm when we arrived and was so close to the river it was like heaven. They offered us ideas for local sightseeing and activities (1/2 mile to the waterfall trail, local breweries and trails!), and as an animal lover I enjoyed how sweet the cats on site were. MY ONLY COMPLAINT: I wish we didn't have to come home! All around one of the best trips we've taken and we'll definitely be returning. PS. If you're reading this Mr. M, we apologize again for our crazy dog. Thank you for being so approachable and gracious we enjoyed getting to know you and your wife! read more

This past weekend, my boyfriend & I spent a night at this campsite. We were fortunate enough to find this spot, as most campsites are closed for the winter (and with it being thanksgiving weekend). There was a reasonable amount of space between campsites, & most campsites had a view of the river. We really enjoyed the set up for the fire pit & were pleased by how close the picnic table was to the pit considering it was extremely cold that night. The campsites were walking distance from a trail that overlooked the stream and a half mile from a trail that had a view of the waterfall. Due to traffic we didn't get in until about 10pm & really appreciated the use of the honor system at this campground. Payment wasn't required until the next morning, & we were allowed to take firewood as needed & pay for the next day too. The area was well maintained, & had clean restrooms as well. The only downside was that this site was booked through the rest of the weekend so we couldn't stay another night. Looking forward to coming back here one day! read more

This campground just about takes the cake for anything you could want short of a 'hike-in' experience. They have tent, cabin, and RV sites with a gorgeous view of the Tye River and the majority of the site is wooded/shaded. I took a trip here in Fall 2015 and already have one booked for this Fall. Word of caution: weekends in prime camping season fill up FAST; book early. There is firewood & small camp store on site where you can purchase basics and the owners live on-site & are super friendly. TL;DR Beautiful location, reasonable pricing, welcoming/involved owners. read more

Just spent a night here at campsite #9 and loved it! We were able to park in front of the site and had a beautiful, elevated view of the river below and direct access to the bathrooms. Also a very convenient location if you're interested in visiting Devils Backbone or any other breweries/cideries/wineries! We're already planning our return visit! read more

THE OWNERS SCREAMED AND CURSED US OUT!! We will never go back!! We just returned from a trip here it was 3 families/ 4 sites (all late 30s and 40s) with children ranging from 3-11. On our first night I went up to the bathroom from our river tent site and when I returned, my friends mentioned the owner came down and yelled at our group for being to loud, and said he "could hear us from one end of the campground to the other"...I thought they were joking because we weren't that loud around our campfire and I couldn't even hear my group the hill from the bathroom where I had just been. We apologized anyway the following day. and felt bad about it... The second night I was really digging the place and how much fun my children were having I couldn't wait to bring them back for another trip.... Again needing to use the restroom about 10 pm My spouse, my son, our friend and I all walked to the bath house with our dog before bed. We wanted to give the dog a chance to stretch her legs in the dog run. Well, we were only there for a weekend and it was our first time, we made the mistake of taking the owners yard for a dog run. IT LOOKS LIKE A DOG RUN, its a low fence square, there is a sign on the fence that says " keep your dog on a leash and pick up after your pet", it is adjacent to the bath house and near a playground, there are two different gates leading to this penned area, and none of them are locked, and we had seen what we thought were other campers in there with their dogs. Well I made the mistake of opening the gate to let my dog have some space, and a woman came down the stairs SCREAMING at me, it was so out of nowhere, I didn't even understand what was happening, I mean 0-100 not at all rational screaming and swearing! I apologized immediately that I had misunderstood. But she continued to scream at me at the top of her lungs and kept yelling at me about my dog's sh*t!! Meanwhile the three adults there are so confused and apologizing no idea why this woman is scream and cursing at us for a simple mistake, (my dog by the way never even made it through the gate, hadn't pooped, that isn't even why we were there, but she carried on screaming curse words for a few minutes. Then her husband came out and also began yelling!! They were both EXTREMELY AGGRESSIVE AND SCREAMING, to the point I backed up because I felt like she was coming after me, her pace down the stairs was so fast I was worried she may fall. I was physically shaking at her verbal assault for what was a simple mistake, there was no harm done. During her screaming she yelled about "didn't I see it was private property on my map?", NO I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW WE HAD A MAP!! It was on the back of our parking pass, it wasn't mentioned at check in that our parking pass had a map on the back?!? I had no idea anyone even lived on the campground and thought the entire building was the campground office. She was so extremely hostile yelling at me over and over " How would I feel if people brought their dog to my yard to sh*t?" I continued to apologize but didn't understand why she was so extremely aggressive and angry for me opening an unlocked, unmarked waist high gate, simple mistake. Thank god my child had gone into the restroom ahead of me I can't imagine how terrified he would have been, this person must have been intoxicated with how irrational her behavior was. It was obvious that this is an ongoing problem at this campground which could easily be fixed with locked gates and private property signs posted on the gates. She concluded her screaming assault with yelling at us to go back to our campsite...we used the restroom and left, my husband waited for us, as it was an unpredictable situation and we didn't feel safe. Once we were back at our site, I was still afraid she would come down there to yell some more. We told our friends back at our sites what had happened and guess what they didn't even hear a thing?! WHAT?! this woman was full out screaming and they didn't hear it at our sites but our campfire banter and low music was heard from one end of the campground to the other.... over the river? I don't think so! It was a simple mistake, we apologized immediately, that should have been that. This ruined our trip, I can't be thankful enough that my child was in the restroom and did not witness this abusive behavior. I have been to rowdy campgrounds and dealt with jerk, loud, party campers.... we aren't those people..this was 3 adults, a child, and a pet quietly going about their business getting ready for bed. Don't stay here, the view and price isn't worth the unpredictable, irrational, aggressive owners. read more

We have stayed here twice and are yet to be disappointed. We love the surroundings. We love the owners; Dave has always been pleasant towards us. Nice little store for any essentials you may have left behind. The sound of the river is awesome to fall asleep. The proximity to great hiking trails is a plus. If you just want to disconnect for a few days this is really a good campground for you. read more

This is a lovely spot with a friendly staff. Campsites are shaded and our site was very level. However, the campground is overcrowded with sites and most of them are tent sites with only 3 very small RV sites with full hookups. The gravel road through the campground is one way, very narrow, with tight turns and ruts. The RV sites are too small and crowded making it a challenge to park your Travel Trailer and your Tow vehicle. All sites come with fire rings and management maintains a large stockpile of wood for sale which encourages fires. The sites are so small that the fire rings are only 10 to 15 feet away from your neighbor at best. The abundance of tent sites and fire rings makes smoke a problem, impacting the ability to enjoy the local trails and the river. You could not escape the smoke. If you are the least bit smoke smoke sensitive, this is not the place to camp. read more

We stayed at Crabtree Falls Campground in November 2014. I saw there were mixed reviews but decided to take a chance as it is the only tent camping open this time of year in the falls area. I must say I was so pleasantly surprised. The sites were well marked, a bit close together but that did not matter as much considering there were not many tent campers this late in the season. I stayed on site T3 and the sound of the river rushing by was just wonderful. The bathroom facilities were better than expected. The mens was immaculate as it was just renovated. The womens was decent, and is set to be renovated in the near future which is a huge plus! They have laundry, wash sink, wood and potable water onsite as well. The store is well stocked with any essentials you may have forgotten. The owner Dave was warm and friendly, and had many fun stories to share. We thoroughly enjoyed getting to know him. He gave us suggestions about where to visit, tips about climbing the falls safely, and many other fun facts about the area. We are hooked and will be back in the spring! Thank you Dave for making our stay so wonderful! read more
