I contacted 3 places to see if they could do the job for me and they were the best and delivered. Some would not/could not pick up and deliver. Some were exorbitantly priced. Crack in the wall was just right. Here is what I needed: 1 glass replaced on a framed picture. Dimensions 33" x 40" with about a 1" frame border around it. I needed it picked up and delivered to my office downtown. They gave me a fair price and were VERY easy to work with. Mickey and his associates did what others would not do for us and I believe that my requests were reasonable. I've known the owner, Mickey, for about a decade now. Thank God they didn't go out of business because I don't know where I'd go to get my stuff framed. Mickey is a real pro. He's a fellow artist, and he's very honest. Sometimes, we'll sit there for an hour picking out one frame for a piece of artwork and talk about art. He cares about your stuff, unlike Aaron Bros./Michael's where they hire some teenager or weirdo with an attitude that just basically throw your sh*t around and scratch it. Believe me! I was visiting a friend in San Diego and had purchased a print that I wanted to have framed for a birthday present. I found Crack in the Wall because it was close to where I was staying, and from the website I was impressed with the owner's experience and the length of time the store has been in business. I had a general idea of what I wanted done, but Mickey spent a lot of time trying out different combinations of mats and frames until we found just the right materials. Mickey shared his professional opinion on what looked good and what didn't, but above all he wanted to be sure that I was happy with the final result. This was on a Monday. I was in town only for the week, so I asked if it could be finished by Friday. Mickey said he would try, but it depended on availability of the framing material. I was thrilled when I received a text of the framed artwork early Wednesday. The final product was perfect - it looked even better than I had hoped for. I've been to CITW quite a few times, and can't believe i haven't left a review yet. Their selection and customer service is something you will not get from a chain store or even another mom and pop framer. Production time varies depending on his current workload, but it's well worth it in the end. Every piece has been produced exactly as specified, but watch out for color variances on display and newly ordered wood frames. Mickey and I corrected one issue by buffing the frame with Steel pad and the other he let me know it was different before completing the framing. I ended up picking another frame and was happy in the end. There is no one else I would go to for framing. read more

I had two other pictures framed...at one of the most ridiculously pricey framers in the city. It was only ONLY ok ...! I had trepidation in even calling Crack in the Wall, because of the past experience. Well, a young woman answered with a friendless that I instantly felt! She invited me to come over to talk about my glass replacement. I did and met her and I met Micky. They both are terrific and I instantly felt like this was going to be OK. Micky explained everything and all of the costs. I was so please that I would not have to do into debt for my art passion! Two days later, I have a lovely beautiful re framed piece. I had a print that required an oval cut out in the mat. Aaron Bros. said it would take ten days just to get the mat cut because of the oval shape. I took it to Crack in the Wall where Mickey helped me select the right mats and frame. He then took me in the back room to show me his machine for cutting round and oval shapes - so no long wait. I've now had three paintings framed by Crack in the Wall. I recommend this business highly. The first two paintings I had done by Crack in the Wall when I discovered the place about three or four years ago. Mickey, the owner, was exceedingly helpful in terms of my selection of the frames. He did not impose his own personal opinion at all, but rather gave me several options based on my description of what I was looking for, and left it open-ended to make sure that I was getting what I really wanted. He listened carefully and we arrived at a framing/matting choice that made sense. Mickey also gave me a full range of pricing options and was understanding when I said I was on something of a budget. I had taken the paintings to another shop to get a quote, and their prices were much higher than Crack in the Wall's. (I also checked Michael's and Aaron Bros., and their prices weren't any better, and the framing staff inspired much less confidence when I asked questions about various options.) The prices Mickey quoted made sense, and he was very patient discussing the different costs for various kinds of glass or plexiglass, different frames, etc. It was a very un-stressful interaction, and Mickey was clearly very knowledgeable. He seemed much more concerned with making sure I was happy with how my painting was presented, and seemed to have no interest in trying to "upsell" me or anything that made the experience less-than-pleasant (I had never had a painting framed before). I made a selection and Mickey gave me a timeline of when the framing would be completed. A couple days later I got a phone call, and Mickey thought of an idea that would make the paintings' presentation better. The paintings had some related material in envelopes and I wanted Mickey to put them behind the frame so that I would not lose them. But Mickey realized they were strong visual elements and should be displayed as part of the paintings. He proposed creating a matted inset where these small visual elements could be visible underneath the painting. He said he would do this free of charge. It was a great idea -- I'd explain it further but then I'd have to discuss the type of painting and go into more details. Needless to say, it was much better than what I had in mind, and it turned out great. I was REALLY happy with the matting/framing of these two paintings, and the price was very reasonable too. Fast forward three years or so. I just today picked up a painting that I had framed at Crack at the Wall. I brought it in a couple months ago and I was hemming and hawing trying to select a frame. But before selecting the frame, I asked Mickey if he could clean the painting, which was a rather grimy oil painting from the 1940s. He said he would try to clean it, but if he couldn't (since he wasn't sure the process would work on this painting), I could apply the cost of the cleaning toward the framing. It turned out he opted not to clean it, so I applied the money toward a frame. Mickey was very patient with me selecting the frame! I must have spent 45 minutes looking over frames, and Mickey kept digging out different frame samples to show me how they'd present on the corner of the painting. We discussed the ways the colors and textures matched, etc. Again, Mickey didn't try to steer me toward any one frame -- it was more like he was listening to try to get the best understanding of what I really wanted. In the end, I selected a frame that I probably wouldn't have chosen in isolation, but that ultimately I believe is the absolute best frame I could have gone with. Once again, I am VERY HAPPY with the way the framing turned out on this painting! It looks GREAT. It was somewhat of an emotional decision for me because this is a very unusual painting and I have tied up a good deal of time, money and energy in acquiring it. The real plus to this story is that Mickey tested out some different methods to attempt to clean the painting, went ahead and cleaned it, and did not charge me extra for the cleaning. (I had already applied the cost of cleaning toward the framing.) So basically I got everything I wanted, and more, at a very reasonable price, and the painting is exceptionally well-framed in such a way that I feel like I'm set for the long haul -- I do not anticipate ever wanting to re-frame it for any reason. So in conclusion, I want to say that if you're in San Diego and you have a piece of art or whatever that you want framed, Crack in the Wall is a HIGHLY RECOMMENDED option. You will get friendly, knowledgeable, high-quality service from somebody who takes pride in excellence and customer satisfaction, and who runs his business in a low-pressure way that makes the entire process enjoyable. The bottom line, though, is that you're going to walk away very happy with how well your artwork is framed! read more

I'm so happy I found Crack in the Wall! For starters, I've never had anything framed before and was SHOCKED at the prices I received from Aaron Brothers, Michael's, and a small mom and pop shop in my neighborhood. I received bids from $450, $600, even $750! I wasn't interested in special glass, glazing, pH-neutral mat board, etc. This wasn't an original art piece or family heirloom, I was looking to frame a family crest history I ordered online for $60 that was printed on regular 'no big deal' paper. I just wanted it to look nice hanging in my house. Mickey's price was not only reasonable but my project was quickly completed and the end result looks great! Framing is not cheap and this definitely is not a discount framing shop. Crack in the wall will work with you to find what you like at a price you're comfortable with. I found this place by looking on Yelp, I live in the area (never even knew it was there!!) and have been all over--from Clairemont to Normal Heights looking for a good framer that doesn't charge an arm and a leg and does quality work. Finally I found one. I do Cross-Stitch as a hobby, mostly gifts for family members, and Mickey did a great job for a very reasonable price. (I checked with Michael's first and their quote was a good $50 more, even with a 75% off coupon.) I will not hesitate to go back to Crack in the Wall for my future projects. I had a very large picture redone at Michael's about 6yrs ago, I can't remember how much it cost, but it was a LOT and in comparison with Mickey's work, done in a very substandard fashion, both on the front AND back. read more

My initial visit was to replace the broken glass in a framed picture which he did and then did not charge me. My next framing project consisted of Burmese pipes and elephant weights that needed a box type frame and a creative way to mount them. Mickey showed me many options. The one I chose was perfect in size, color, design and texture. He then helped me choose a beautiful silk backing and the finished result is stunning.
