THIS PLACE IS GLORIOUS. BIG shoutout to Ray Street Custom Framing for such an excellent experience all the way through. From the very first email exchange with Michelle, to visiting the shop and working with her and Dave, to them wrapping up and loading the pieces up for me to take home, the entire experience was first class. I've never been so excited to part with my money, knowing that the results would blow me away. And blow me away they did. The piece in the photo is a thangka painting I brought back from Nepal. It was Michelle's idea to hang it as a diamond, and wow. To see the enormous scale, Michelle offered to take a photo of me next to it. I audibly gasped when I first saw it, and just sat staring blankly for 10 minutes as I took it in. GOOSEBUMPS. There's another one I got framed (I'll add a picture soon) that is done perfectly, as well. Great care was taken to make sure that the mantra - om mani padme hum - and central symbol - om - was not upside down and would be readable even as a diamond. It's non-glare acrylic so that it remains lightweight, protected, and legible. And for the other one, great care was taken to show off the yak brush marks in the margin while keeping it centered in the frame -- no easy feat. I am so happy. HERE IS WHY: Price: I had originally gone to Art of Framing on Adams Ave and was quoted $80 just to have a common stock matting placed in a frame I already owned, and to have a paper backing put on it. When I went to Ray Street Custom Framing Michelle (the owner) quoted me $35/40. That's more like it! Customer service: Michelle is awesome!! She is very personable, friendly, genuinely cares about her customers and what she does, and she is an artist herself. She has also employed someone named Susan who is also AWESOME and a talented artist. That these women are artists matters to me because they have more of an "artistic eye" when it comes to framing pieces that typical frame shop personal wouldn't. When I picked up my piece it looked awesome. It even looked better than I imagined it would. The frame I had brought in was one I bought at a junk shop, and they glass was a bit dirty (I hadn't noticed). Susan cleaned it for me, which was great and I really appreciated it. I had gotten a custom painting made for my partner as a present. I was not in town and I had yelped and found Ray Street and sent my partner to order the frame so it would be ready when I returned. I had asked him to see Michelle (based on Yelp reviews) and she did a wonderful job picking out the frame. I really can't say it was worth the money or the wait. I purchased a $700 frame and couldn't even get the color I wanted. They said they'd call me when the frame was ready in a week and weeks passed and I never heard from them. When I called in to see if my frame had come in, they said it would be available tomorrow. What Michelle did with it was like a great surgeon... talked through the options, making sure I was comfortable with what could be done, and being honest about what could not be.
