Stopped in at Cracker Barrel just off I-72 near Decatur, Illinois for lunch, and went a different route than usual. I ordered the vegetable plate with four sides, broccoli, baby carrots, collard greens with ham, and green beans. The broccoli was cooked just right, still had some firmness to it and not mushy. The carrots were simple and good, exactly what you expect when they're done right. The green beans had that slow-cooked flavor, definitely not straight out of a can, they had some seasoning and depth to them. The collard greens with ham were the standout. Nice smoky flavor, well-seasoned, and clearly had some time put into them. I also had cornbread, which came out warm, a little crisp on the outside and soft on the inside, and a hot mocha with the meal. This was a good reminder that you don't have to go heavy here to get a solid meal. The vegetable plate holds its own and actually brings more flavor than you might expect. Delicious food! My pot roast with mashed potatoes and my sides of sweet baby carrots and broccoli were just the ticket on a gloomy and cold day. Our server was friendly and efficient. She came around at just the right time to refill my cup with steaming hot and very good coffee. Went to Cracker Barrel in Thanksgiving Day. Loved that we could check in and see the wait time - it allowed us to walk right in and be seated. The wait staff was very friendly. Bad experience for the first time at Cracker Barrel. A week ago we had a great experience at the same place. Three different wait staff, NONE of whom ever brought us any forks/knives. Had to ask for flatware and straws for our drinks, waitress was refilling a water glass and poured a large amount of water on our table. The next waiter told us there was NO CHICKEN, so we had to reconsider orders. Took twenty five minutes for them to bring the wrong food to our table, (one of these plates was chicken!) and another ten minutes to bring our food, half of which was still wrong, twenty more minutes to get the last main course (which was wrong again!). Asked for "to-go" boxes (ten more minutes). Asked for a manager, she was very nice and apologetic and comped the entire meal. What is happening to the work-force in our country? The last 3 times we visited Cracker Barrel we said we would never go back. The first time we actually had to leave because we waited a very long time and no one waited on us, the second time we waited a very long time until someone finally waited on us. The last time we also waited a long time and our waitress was too interested in what other people were talking about to take our order. When she brought our food (which took forever) it was not our order and she had to reorder our meal. My hot tea was cold and I was never offered a fresh refill. I had never been to a Cracker Barrel before, and when I learned it was a store combined with a restaurant I wasn't expecting much for my dinner. I was pleasantly surprised! I ordered Chicken N Dumplings with a side of Mac and Cheese and a side of Steamed Broccoli. Mac and Cheese is my favorite food, and this side was sufficient. Steamed Broccoli was very buttery and soft, which I enjoyed. Though I did wish there was a little more of it. Chicken N Dumplings were fantastic! I had never had it before, and it was incredibly filling and delicious. My food came extremely quickly for a Saturday night dinner rush, and our waitress Gail was very welcoming! Not to mention our drinks were never empty, as the free refills were always on time, without prompting. I enjoyed my dinner so much I returned this morning for brunch, and enjoyed their French Toast with Scrambled Eggs and Sausage. French toast was very sweet and had the perfect amount of butter and saturation. Scrambled eggs could've been a little less dry, but with combination with the French Toast it wasn't an issue. Sausages were a good addition to my breakfast, and balanced everything nicely. The food did take a little bit longer to come out this time, but it isn't anything to complain about. Out waitress Jennifer was very pleasant, and against very prompt on the drink refills. I ordered breakfast for carryout and arrived earlier than the time on the confirmation. My food was already done and was cold by the time I took it to my very close hotel room. The scrambled eggs were barely scrambled and seemed more like chopped fried eggs. The bacon was fine and the biscuits and gravy were fine. I prefer sausage gravy to plain gravy, so I only ate a couple bites. It was nice to have the option to request utensils with the order. read more

I enjoy coming to Cracker Barrel when I come across them in my travels. Love the menu option from healthy to loosen the belt style meals. Bummer, they discontinued offering turkey bacon. I am a fan of it. I also love walking through the general store to see seasonal items as well as the retro candies. Not happy. $85 takeout order. No cobbler which was ordered. Picture of cobbler showed pan and instead got 5 small styrofoam cups 1/3 full of just peaches. I just ordered Thanksgiving dinner for my dad from Cracker Barrel in Decatur. (My family is unable to drive or get out for the holiday). I was having issues with ordering online so I called directly (as I live in CA). I spoke to 2 managers one was a woman (who I did not get her name) and the second was Greg who helped me with my order. Both were very friendly and helpful. Greg was able to overcome any issues I had trying to order online and went above and beyond helping me. I am so appreciative of the kindness they both showed. My family in Decatur says they love the food at Cracker Barrel and I was glad I was able to make their Thanksgiving dinner a reality for them. I'm not the biggest fan of Cracker Barrel, but there's two things they make very well here: Catfish and blueberry pancakes. I'm not a breakfast person at all, so I'm glad that catfish is available at breakfast time. It's always good and fresh here. My wife really likes the pancakes; They're bursting with blueberries. Too many for my taste, but hey, I can eat around them. For some odd reason, the pancakes and catfish at Orlando CB's aren't very good. Maybe it's something in the water. As a survivalist, I have eaten roadkill many times just to survive. Tonight's meal for Mother's Day was just plain cruel to what they did not only to me, but my family and that carcass. The gravy that they poured on top of my entire country fried chicken was the burnt stuff they scraped from the bottom of the chafing tray. My son had to have his runny red steak taken back as blood squirted onto his shirt from being raw when he ordered well done. His mother's shrimp was, at best tolerable. This, after waiting 20 minutes for 4 when we were told 10 minutes. It wasn't so much the wait, as it, apparently from their whispers,it was my fault for not giving correct name. I guess I would do that so we could spend more time waiting for a table? The Benihana's were raw and doughy. Now you might think this is all tolerable, but it's hard to deal with all this when you finished your drink before the appetizers and she has told me she will come back with refills four times. I ate my meal with no drink. Since the waitress could not bring a drink, I left zero tip. I was asked as I was paying (tried to pay by ap but it works as well as our waitress did) how our meals were. I said, you don't want to know. She said I am so sorry sir, let me get a manager for you. I said I will ignore him, don't bother, I won't be a returning customer who keeps quiet. I love fine dining, so it may come as a surprise that I'm giving this place five stars. Cracker Barrel is far from fine dining. And yes, I know it's a chain of restaurants. But I had never been to a Cracker Barrel before, until I went to this location in Decatur. I'm really glad I had a chance to experience it before I moved back to the Northwest. Eating here is truly an "experience" of sorts. Think Claim Jumper, but not as refined or polished, and much more laid back. As you're waiting for a table, you can sit outside in a rocking chair. It's awesome. The staff was super friendly, and the food was pretty darn good. I'm obsessed with strawberry lemonade. Their version comes in a chilled mug, and that makes it even better. Their fried chicken is amazing, and really brings me back to the days when my grandma would make it for me. They also serve breakfast all day, which is pretty awesome! Service can be a little slow, but the atmosphere and happy faces surrounding you will make up for it. read more

I even Googled for an answer, and apparently their market analysts came to the conclusion that Cracker Barrel would not be profitable and have no plans to ever build out there. F that! There is only one place to get cheesy hash brown casserole this good. Cracker Barrel is the place. Likewise, the cheese factor in the general store makes for great browsing while you wait for a seat. If you haven't been to the south or the heartland, you haven't seen one of these restaurants. Boy oh boy are you missing out. It isn't that the food is creative or gourmet or even ridiculously fresh. However, their breakfast is sure to fill you to the gills and stick to your ribs. I especially like the hash brown casserole. Their biscuits and gravy are good, if you don't compare it to Granny's. If you like grits, the you are in the right place. Before you get they, you must navigate from the front door through their gift shop that resembles a general-store. Here you find candles, lotions, cast iron pans, angel mirrors, floral aprons with tons of flounces, and 'every day is a good day to fish' signs. I can spend an hour just wondering at the trinkets in here. Nobody does frilly country decor like,a Cracker Barrel! As for me, I just browse, though I have been tempted from time to time to buy a pair of,the amazing rocking chairs. You want one? You can order from their website. Oh, and if you want the fishing sign, that can also be yours from the website! Service is always friendly. I find myself saying "yes, ma'am" when I am here. First of all, let me preface by saying that I usually LOVE Cracker Barrel, but this locations was pretty bad. Our waitress was slow, hardly ever came around for refills, our food was given to us from somebody else, and she had no personality. My breakfast was decent... I mean its hard to screw up Bacon and Hasbrown casserole, but my main part, the Eggs in the Basket (over easy eggs inside toast) was... and I can't believe I am saying this... had TOOO much butter on it. I mean I was biting down and butter was squirting out. The sourdough bread already has so much flavor, you don't need that much butter. My husbands biscuits and gravy was terrible... the gravy lacked flavor and the biscuits tasted like flour. I mean the biscuits are usually their staple, the main reason I eat there and they were horrendous. OK...Yes, I do like the food and atmosphere and browsing the shop for memories of my childhood. The service is still a little slow. This is my Mom's favorite breakfast in Decatur (Forsyth). Get the single pecan pancake with maple syrup, delicious. As a kid traveling to Florida, I remember getting a special gift/toy for the ride. Good for families and groups. Freezing in the restaurant! Ordered a very simple breakfast, but had to get unwanted food or order everything ala cart. Told them not to bring biscuits, they still did. What can I say about one of my favorite go to joints. I love Cracker Barrell! While the food is delicious - the catfish (blackened or fried), lemon pepper tilapia, fried cod, greens, green beans, corn bread (sigh), pancakes with the crunchy edges (faints) - the restaraunt struggles to appeal to many who've not eaten here due to the connotations which the name and country store appearance gives. If it weren't for a friend of mine insisting that we eat here while traveling 15 years ago, I'd never learn to appreciate how special this place is. If you're a person of color and want a great meal, you'll definitely find it in EVERY Cracker Barrel you'll visit and the service IS ALWAYS on point! Asked manager to clean it for us since he was seating us, he proceeded to wipe food off the table with his hands, then threw the menus down and walked off. Probably one of the worst visits I've had here, we arrive at 4:45, we are told a 15 minute wait, it was busy so I understand the wait being longer than expected. We're sat around 5:15. 6:00 rolls around and still no food, at this point point 3 tables who were sat after not only had their food but 2 of the tables had already paid and left. We ask our server,m Kylee to check on the food. She comes back and tells us another 10 minutes because they were short staffed on line. So I mentioned all the tables sat after us that have ate and left, so clear lie. It's pretty obvious she was just trying to cover up for not ringing In the food. So then the "10" minutes go by..nothing..she brings out a plate full of biscuits, but not joshs cornbread. I ask to speak to the manager Greg. He comes to the table and I tell him about the biscuit mistake as well as everything else leading up this point and how we have now been here and hour and a half and still have no food. He says he will check on the food and he never returns to the table nor have either one of them apologized for all this. Server comes back with cornbread then takes the biscuits. I stopped her telling her I ordered biscuits. She argues saying the manager told her we didn't have biscuits, although being the one who took our order she should have already known what we each ordered. 6:30 rolls around and we finally get our food. Josh is missing his bbq sauce, my daughter Kissinger ranch and ketchup. I was missing a side and given something I didn't order. At this point server has an attitude even though I remained polite with her but was noticeably upset. Meal gets fixed. We eat ask for boxes and then they bring out the check. Full check. No apologies made and no food removed from the bill. At this point I'm furious and ask to speak to the manager again. He comes back and I ask for his name, the servers name and the Coorporate number and would you believe how he all of a sudden cared. I explained that I served for 8 years and worked In restaurants even longer. He ended up taking care of the meal after cooperates was brought up but overall very dissatisfied with our visit. read more
