The owner, Frank, replied to my complaint with a sarcastic "happy new year" message and then messaged me, accusing me of "having mental issues". I have never met Frank. I merely complained about an issue I had with his salon and stylist This is the kind of person he is. Definitely not the type of salon I would ever go back to. Had I known, I would've never went in the first place. I've been coming here awhile but lately the color doesn't seem to be covering my roots. I've mentioned it to the stylists that my grays are more resistant, but they insist the dye only takes 35 minutes to process. I had it colored just before a family wedding and then again for the holidays. My roots show in the pictures that were taken at these events. There are so very many fabulous Hair Slons to choose from in the Bernardsville area and I highly suggest choosing one of those. From a design standpoint Craft Hair Studio is lovely. The staff is very talented, professional and there is always a warm welcome upon arrival. After several successful blow outs I took the leap and decided to go for the color and not travel far and wide for this service. I was a bit nervous as the color specialist was whispering with her colleagues about what combination of revlon colours to mix. They were side glancing at me and discussing and it was slightly uncomfortable. I decided to engage with them and asked what was happening and if she had done colour before and for how long. She said yes all of the time and I was good with that. No more questions, back to my computer. Later I was told it is very common to ask team members for suggestions and everyone does it. My thought was if that's the case why didnt anyone making suggestions come over and look at my roots. Jumping to the chase--- The very talented stylist having previously given me fantastic blow. drys....coloured my hair with a skunk stripe outcome. This was somewhat of a surprise and first time for me. I explained I was not happy with the darker stripe and she suggested she did not think it looked THAT bad. Not the outcome one looks for when leaving a hair salon. I simply asked if she would be comfortable if it was her hair....no response. Please know I get it, mistakes happen and that is ok!! After a few minutes digesting this new look I was willing to come to terms with a plan to resurrect this outcome. However the volatile owner or co owner made a scene suggesting I wanted free service. He then suggested it would look better after 4 or five days when it oxidised. He also asked me why I did not have it pulled through to blend and I said I didnt know to ask for this. Clearly he acknowledged there was a problem with the outcome only his way of dealing with it was to humiliate me and suggest I was looking for a handout. I do appreciate he was willing to protect and back his staff however I question if it should be at the expense of demoralising and humiliating a client. He was telling me to leave and waving me to the front door. He is twice my size and it was some what frightening having a grown man, in a very high pitch aggressive tone telling me to leave and waving his hand towards the exit. I hastily grabbed my laptop however my cell phone was left on the chair. I left a tip for the service but was not allowed to pay for the service as it was suggested I came in looking for this. ABSURD! Realising I left my cell phone I was hesitant to re enter the salon to retrieve it as he was quite volatile. I did peek in and he was out of sight so I asked at reception if someone could grab it. I am an older woman and here I am peeking in the window to make certain it is safe for me to enter. This is a small community and I typically choose to patronise and shop locally however I will by all means NEVER return to Craft Hair Studio. I am one person and my patronage will not impact this business and that is why I was treated so poorly. People or I go to a salon to feel good and leave feeling even better than upon arrival.....I left with my heart racing. I went to another salon already and my hair colour will be easy to repair...... there is almost always a simple solution. Thank you YELP for giving me a forum to share my experience. read more

I've been going to Craft w my mom for a little under 2 years and they are INCREDIBLE. I've never left unhappy. I have very thick, curly, unruly hair so it can be very hard to maintain but going here has absolutely saved my hair! I generally go to Nicole who is an amazing stylist-- always listens to me and makes sure I leave smiling. My mom goes to Kris who also Does a beautiful job and makes sure my mom's cut and color looks good. Due to the pandemic they were all booked up so earlier today I went to Stephanie-- it was my first time with her but, again, she did a spectacular job (I'm so happy with the cut!!!) and was super friendly. Staff did a great job of social distancing and keeping the salon safe. Everyone was wearing masks, all customers were social distancing, and they had plastic covers over all the chairs that they replaced for each person + hand sanitizer for when you enter and leave. Also plexiglass between each chair when washing and cutting and at reception. They charge 5$ extra but well worth it! I recommend the salon to everyone who can afford it, staff is always friendly and very skilled. You won't be disappointed!! read more

My hair and makeup for my wedding was done at Craft Hair Studio. I'm from out of town so I had to do my trial 2 days before my wedding. Nicole and Amanda are artists. I gave them some thoughts I had and they created art on my head. Nicole took my vague descriptions and made my hair beautiful. Amanda made me look soft and romantic. Can it be? Am i writing the first Yelp review for Craft? It is my pleasure. I followed Brooke here from the previous salon in Morris Plains, after spending about 7 years with her there. It took me so many years to find someone that cut/ colored, painted and styled my hair exactly how i wanted. She and Frank took a big leap to bring this to life and I am so happy that they did. The salon is absolutely gorgeous, it has kept the understated, upscale feel of B-ville on the outside but when you walk inside it is glorious. The metallic tones are sleek and it is beautifully done. The espresso/ cappuccino is exactly what you want when you sit down on a cool fall day, or if you are feeling exceptionally special - go for a glass of wine or sparkling water. You are made to feel like the only client in the salon and you leave the salon feeling like a million dollars. I have received compliments on my hair for years and that is why i wouldn't dream of going anywhere else. I take as much pride in my hair as my stylist does in her work. Craft Hair Studio is the absolute BEST! I've been going here since they first opened and I will always be a loyal customer. The owner is incredibly skilled, nice person, and his staff is incredibly skilled and nice as well. I've gotten haircuts from both Frank and Kris, and I've always left feeling beautiful and - more importantly - the cuts are still beautiful weeks later and grow out perfectly. In 2019 I got engaged, and similar to many brides had my ceremony in 2020 and reception in 2021. I used Craft for both my ceremony and reception - wanting to use them for hair and makeup was never even a question - and I could not have been happier with the outcome both times. They did an awesome job coloring my hair. The hair cut not so much. I scheduled an appointment with a lady I found on Instagram and her hair cuts looked so pretty. But when it came to cut my hair it felt super rushed. Which I get Bc she was very busy. But When I got home I noticed my bangs were super uneven, very layered and botchy on the side my hair was parted. Not blended in at all. She also cut very very short layers all over my hair I'm guessing to blend the bangs in but they look like randomly cut pieces. I'm very disappointed considering I paid 380+ a tip. For a balayage and a haircut that's super uneven and doesn't fit my hair type at all. I'm only leaving this review Bc I'm extremely disappointed that I paid that much money for a botched hair cut when clearly on the lady Instagram shows she does beautiful hair cuts. i told the lady that someone botched my bangs previously and I grew them out to get them fixed and to leave them long and blended but the shape of "the Bridget Bardot bangs" And I came out of the salon with a hair cut I already had that I grew out to get it fixed. read more

I have gotten my hair colored several times by one stylist and every time is worse than the previous. this last time I told her I wanted the same as the time before and in the end it was a dull dirty blonde rather than the bright blonde I had been when I walked in. Also the girl who washed my hair did a half-assed job and did not fully rinse out the toner. I had also scheduled a blow dry but the same girl who shampooed my hair partly dried my hair with no styling whatsoever. I left feeling miserable. I will not be returning. read more

Extremely disappointing. I scheduled a cut and blowout, which I've gotten from different higher end hair salons for $45, this was $80. My hair was not blown out fully and I've attached pictures of the results. If I'm going to pay 80 dollars, I feel like you should receive a much higher quality blowout and at least fully dry my hair. read more

I had the most wonderful experience here! The salon is gorgeous inside, with a very relaxing atmosphere. After being shampooed, they applied a warm towel to the conditioner which was a nice touch. Caitlin was my hair stylist and she gave me the exact haircut I was looking for, lots of textured layers, body, and a few inches off. She used a razor cut technique which came out perfect. I've been looking for a new hairstylist due to the fact that my hairstylist moved and was now over an hour ride from me. After doing some research and reading all the great reviews I decided to make an appointment for a consultation. I was so looking forward to it! The girl on the phone was very friendly so this confirmed my decision. When I walked in the girl behind the desk looked me up and down, no smile, and curtly asked me if she could help me. She then went to get the hairstylist who I had my consult with and they both then looked at me up and down. It was very uncomfortable and weird. The hairstylist came over and introduced herself and told me to sit in a chair that was covered by a towel due to self tanner she says had dropped during the day. She spent about 5 minutes talking with me. The whole experience was very weird, uncomfortable. I felt like I was being judged from the moment I walked in. I made an appointment despite my gut feeling that this was just not the place for me. I left feeling quite disappointed after reading all the wonderful reviews about the great, warm friendly staff. I'll be cancelling my appointment.. I'd rather drive over an hour for a warm, friendly reception and service then what I received in the total of 10 minutes that I was there! read more

She proved herself yet again last night, by adding partial balayage highlights in my hair for some dimension and cutting my hair exactly how I wanted it to be. I can't speak highly enough of the team that work hear. If your having a bad day the owner lets his adorable puppy Remy snooze in your lap and snuggle all your problems away. I came here for a color correction, I have natural jet black hair, it was a dyed orangey/peachy color when I got there and I wanted to go blonde. I got Stephanie, and she was very good and I was so happy with the results. I've since visited for my hair done for a wedding I was attending as well as another root update appt. all with Stephanie. I thought the price for the hair ($85) was a bit steep as seeing they didn't do much to my hair, just curled it. The hair colors is expensive too but I think it's worth it.
