    Inside Cranberrys

So I think I might have just found my new favourite cafe in Glasgow. I actually checked the reviews on Yelp first as I can always trust the Yelpers to know great places! The cafe on the inside made me feel like I was somewhere abroad, there's lovely big windows to look out onto Merchant City. The waiter was very friendly and wasn't breathing down our necks after we'd finished eating to get rid of us. I chose French toast with bacon and maple syrup and it was a dream. I haven't stopped thinking about it! The French toast was light and fluffy, the bacon crispy (my favourite) and the maple syrup was divine. I was completely stuffed after so unfortunately didn't get to try their lovely cakes. They have seats outside for sunny days too and when I went there was a constant flow of people, a sign of a great place. I'm already thinking about when I can go next!

What can i say about Cranberry's... Well, let me begin with this. Cranberry's is probably one of my favourite tearoom's in Glasgow. It has a nice, homely feel to it, and I always love to take my friends or family there. Even if it gets a bit busy, you can still enjoy yourself, and have a proper conversation, as the place is pretty peaceful, whereas places like Starbucks are bloody mobbed 24/7! So if you're planning a trip to this particullar cafe I can assure you, you will not regret it. You will love the whole atmosphere and the staff are lovely too. Also, try their cakes, they are just top class!

Looking for a quick spot of lunch in the Merchant City I opted for Cranberrys cafe on Wilson Street. I remember being in here some years back and the place being queued out the door but this wasn't the case on this occasion. There was a lot of staff on - all very friendly and our spot beside the window was good for people watching. The menu has a good selection of sandwiches, bagels, toasties and main meals with an all day breakfast and an assortment of cakes and desserts. Spying a bagel with cream cheese and fresh fruit on the menu I opted for this as its not something I've seen or every had before. My bagel came with a side salad and slices of strawberry and kiwi and was pretty tasty but to be honest for the cost (£6.50) its was nothing that special. My friend opted for some soup with bread - again no complaints but nothing to write home about. We split some caramel shortcake which well.. was exactly as you'd expect and for £2.25 I've had taster shortcakes from the supermarket. With a couple of soft drinks our bill was £17 - a little on the expensive side for a pretty standard lunch and whilst I wouldn't rush back ,our lunch was tasty enough.

Effectively a traditional tea room but with a modern twist, Cranberry's avoids being old-fashioned but has all the delights of a cosy cafe. Serving up teas, coffees, cakes and light snacks such as sandwiches and salads it is suitable for a treat and a leisurely lunch. The food is quite unusual - don't expect boring, bogstandard sandwishes here. A favourite of mine is the delicious coronation chicken - and I'm fussy about my coronation chicken. It is essentially a Merchant City cafe and the prices reflect that. It is, I'd say, pretty over-priced but I guess it's to be expected for a nice cafe in this location.

    Review Highlights - Cranberrys Cafe

It's in effect a granny-style tearoom with a modern twist, and for me, one of the big hitters in the often slightly underwhelming Merchant City.

It was a rainy day: drizzling : that consistency of rain that makes you feel a bit run down. I was met with the most delicious, warming coffee: a very smooth latte, that had such a lovely taste that there was no need for a drop of sugar. They were out of most of their pastries by the time I sat in--due to their popularity, I have no doubt. I chose one of their remaining items: a small cake that had a touch of lemon and a raspberry on top of a creamy frosting. It was delicious--a welcomed treat when I felt in need of a pick me up. I did not have a chance to test their food so am unable to comment. Do note however: This is a VERY small place. Cozy to be sure, but small and by no means for larger groups. It is ideal for the soloist and duos to come in and have a fairly quick coffee, cake, and food (I assume). This is NOT a place to study. There are no comfortable lounge chairs, chairs or tables. The seating is composed of stools that reside at two bars. It's kind of reminding me of Italian style cafes where you drink your espresso at the bar, across from the barista who just served it to you (though in Rome, they don't offer you stools even!). Given the level of their coffee and cake, I'll be back again soon.

Bonus points for the unlimited coffee refills -- always a win in my book! They've got a huge selection of sweet and savory pancake combinations, or you can build your own with over 12 million possibilities (yes, really!). You can choose between buttermilk or buckwheat pancake bases -- we went with the Shakshuka Stack, which came with two fluffy buttermilk pancakes topped with perfectly fried eggs and a rich, spicy tomato shakshuka sauce. Absolutely delicious -- spicy, savory, and such a refreshing change from the usual plain pancakes. Definitely enough to share! One thing to note: they do automatically add a service charge for table service, so keep that in mind when you get the bill. If you can't get enough, they even have a location at the airport -- perfect for one last pancake fix before you fly out. Highly recommend!

(Note for US customers: eggs are either 'hard' or 'runny'; no such thing as over-easy or over-well!). Also customize every little add-on, so don't pay for what you don't want -- most sides we found were enough for 2 people to share. Sweet options can be incredibly sweet, so ask questions for clarity. Lots of sweet options but lots of savory too! Delicious fresh food!

The wife ordered their "Fisherman" which is pan seared Scottish coley or pollock (for 27 GBP). The battered fish with the chips was more delicately done here and delicious. As an aside I tried several times to find a place here in Glasgow or in Edinburgh that did a "special" fish and chips, that is breaded with crumbs and not battered, but apparently no one does that healthier old school preparation anymore (and I need to inform my old work colleague who hailed from Glasgow and gave me this inside tip that it's not practiced anymore). I also had a Chieftain IPA. The side of peas were dryish and not flavorful and small portioned and not done as well and tasty as I have had in London or Perth, just saying. We also had their sticky toffee pudding with ice cream for dessert and that was good. The fries were mediocre. Server was friendly and attentive. 4 stars overall and a nice local flavor Glasgow outing.
