I love food. I love eating. I also love checking out new businesses. All of these things collided today when I visited the brand new Primal Roast on St Vincent Street (up near Charing Cross). First impressions might be that this is a paleo cafe, and I guess it does cater to that customer but they are actually also brilliant for anyone with dietary requirements/allergies, or anyone who just wants really tasty food. At the moment, I'm mostly sticking to dairy free/gluten free and found that the food here fits that perfectly - the staff really know their stuff in terms of ingredients and allergies and will happily talk you through what is suitable. There's also a couple of options each day which are suitable for vegans - the veggie Buddha bowl as well as dessert/sweet options. It's also a much bigger space than expected - there's a few seats in the front area but then a really large seating area out back. It's perfect for a casual lunch spot with couches, or working with a laptop as there's power points and wifi (with a password which I didn't ask for on this visit!). I sat out the back and the guys were nice enough to bring my food out to me which I appreciated. So, the veggie buddha bowl. The veggies will change depending on what they cook but today it was sumac aubergine which was all my dreams come true - I love aubergine so much. Served with steamed rice, spinach as well as chickpea stew and topped with crispy kale, it was absolutely delicious. You can tell that these guys know their food as it was packed with flavour and I totally loved it. For £5.50 I thought the portion size was just right and left feeling perfectly full. They do Dear Green coffee and Tea Pigs tea - super fruit is absolutely amazing! I also got a couple of slices of cake to take away as they have dairy free options - chocolate orange cheesecake sounded too good to resist! If you're in between 7.30-11am (or all day Sat) they do breakfast which sounds good and has something for most people - porridge, hash browns, breakfast burritos. Other lunch options include frittata, soup, grilled chicken, steak. The menu isn't massive but there's a lot of variety. I'll definitely be back! read more

This is a great new place, offering goodies that you don't often get elsewhere. The reason I visited, one cold and rainy Saturday morning, is that I had heard they do raw vegan cakes. And they do - several types! This is a rare treat - becoming more common across Glasgow these days, but still makes my heart do a little happy dance when I see it. I had a caramel slice, which was delicious, and a pot of lemon and ginger tea, which warmed me up nicely to face the rain again. In the chiller, I also noticed birch juice - amazing! This is the first place in Glasgow I've seen stock this, and I was so pleased to see it as it saves me drilling a hole in a birch tree during spring time, should I fancy some birch sap. I'll be back to get some of this, for sure. I'm not kidding, it's lovely stuff, and very good for you. It seems Primal Roast have made some enlightened choices. It's also a lovely environment to sit and have a break in. Despite it being a basement cafe, it's very bright and cheerful, with sunshiny yellow on the walls, light woods, and a big glass fronted counter. It's very relaxing and pleasant space. The coffee is Dear Green and it would be great if they also had a second brand to choose from - that really would make Primal Roast the perfect place for me. read more

This was an excellent breakfast. We both had the sweet potato hash and a cappuccino. The cappuccinos were single shot and had a nice taste. The dish was very good, one of the best breakfasts we have had on the trip. The focus of this restaurant is healthy eating. They had a number of vegan and gluten free options. These guys deserve five stars alone for the fact they played an entire City and Colour album during my visit. When I think of the perfect chilled out working environment that's exactly the type of music I like to listen to. So Primal Roast are off to a good start... The cafe itself is a lot bigger than it first looks with a spacious seating area in the back. I'm finding it hard to describe the decor without repeating the word lovely over and over. It's bright and very inspiring, with cute sofas for lounging and table and chairs for working or eating. Plus they give you such a generous amount of personal space between tables. The staff are super knowledgable about their extensive tea range and serve up some really healthy breakfast and lunch options - really different to the other food options in this area of Glasgow. Today I had the grilled chicken, quinoa and roast vegetables for lunch with a really delicate green tea on the side. The grilled chicken dish was just what I needed. Everything was really scrummy, the chicken was soft and tender and roast vegetables are always a winner in my book. Big thumbs up for the roasted courgette - my fave! I'm so impressed with Primal Roast. It's really nice to see someone break the mould of city centre cafes and do healthy food so passionately without being preachy. I'll be back for those breakfast options and more lovely tea really soon. read more

I don't normally go along with the bandwagon of reviews however this place in the bomb Coffee was rich and velvety, served at the perfect temperature of hot but enough to sip at straight away The meat buddha bowl was amazing, soft succulent beef chilli on a bed of rice with a sweet tomato salsa I've no idea how they managed to give the beef a softly smokey grilled taste with the tenderness it had, places only achieve this by serving up dry tough meat. The staff all come across genuinely happy and conversed with each customer that walked in After my meal I wanted more! Not had a dish this tasty in a very long time and certainly wasn't expecting to be this blown away by the food offerings of a coffee shop! Massive kudos to all that work here read more

I so thought I'd reviewed this little spot of coffee heaven before! Apparently not.. This is somewhere I'm known to detour via on my walk to work for what I think is a highly contested best flat white in Glasgow. I've had so many and they're always great, perfect temperature perfect smoothness. I love them. After fracturing my ankle and not walking to work in a while, first day walking again I had to treat myself to one. The barista seems to really know their coffee, and they always seem to have a brilliant wee range of guest coffees you can have prepared with different brewing methods. As soon as I'm there and have time to sit in I'm trying it all :p Because of the time i go past I haven't managed to try much of their food! Picked up a salad box one morning for lunch. Tasted lovely but was maybe a little small. I've picked up the raw breakfast bar a few times, wow! It's great. I don't know how they do it but it has the nicest texture of any 'raw' bar I've ever had, and I try make them all the time. Aside from the food and coffee, the staff are lovely, always funny. And it's a lovely space, I can't wait to get back and sit in for a proper brunch or something. read more

I popped in here today after it had been recommended to me by some friends. It is situated on St Vincent St, just along from King Tuts. This is an extremely deceiving space from the roadside There is a cute little outside seating area which is pretty sheltered and it has space to park your bike. There is also nice seating at the front window which is bright and airy, allowing some people watching whilst you sip on some fab Dear Green coffee! The space through the back has a number of comfortable couches, tables and chairs with a nice little vintage chest of drawers which you can help yourself to fresh water, menus and condiments. The staff were very welcoming and attentive. We initially opted for latte whilst looking at the menu. The coffee was on point, nice and strong. The menu caters for a variety of tastes and is definitely a winner for people with specific dietary requirements. We had the Buddha Bowl with slow roasted chicken, and the Mackerel salad. Both were super tasty and a great portion size for lunch. It was evident everything was freshly prepared and the dishes were full of colour and bursting with flavour. The Mackerel salad was my favourite dish. The pink grapefruit and blueberries worked really well with the salty fish and aniseed hints from the fennel. There were also a nice selection of cakes, brownies, fruit loafs etc. I will head back to sample some of these next time!! read more

Five stars after one visit? Yep, this is one of those places. I walk past Primal Roast every time I walk to work, but for some reason I didn't try it until yesterday. Probably because I never walk past with time to spare... Yesterday I needed a place to work away from home, and decided that it was time to try out Primal Roast. I got there just before 10 in the morning, and stayed until about half one in the afternoon. It looks tiny as you walk in, but there is a large seating area in the back, where I decided to sit. Despite it being a cellar room, it's comfortably bright and pleasant. There are both tables and sofas, as well as power points here and there. They've also got WiFi, so it's the perfect place to sit with your laptop for a few hours! Anyway, onto the food... I started off with an almond milk latte, which was really lovely. I find that some almond milk lattes can be a bit meh, but this was one of the really good ones. Once lunch-time came around, I opted for the veggie buddha bowl (basmati rice, spinach, chickpea stew and grilled aubergine), which was amazing. Healthy but still wonderfully flavoursome. I wish I hadn't devoured it so quickly! They've also got a meaty buddha bowl as well as salads and soups, and breakfast between 7.00 and 11.30. Before I went I also bought one of the raw caramel slices to take away, because... how could I not?! They do several raw, vegan and refined sugar-free cakes, which all looked wonderful. I had the caramel slice later that evening, and it was delicious. Chocolatey and caramel-y, with a hint of coconut. Moreover, the staff were really friendly and nice, and their choice of background music was great. I'm definitely returning to Primal Roast! read more

Such a lovely place! Interior is simple but cozy, we were sitting right next to the window with the sun coming through - such a nice ambience! Staff are really attentive and kept asking if the food was okay or we needed anything else. I orderer sweet potato hash brown, spinach, bacon and poached eggs - omg that was delicious!!! My boyfriend had toast with crushed avocado, bacon and poched eggs - great place as well. We also had a slice of white chocolate and coconut vegan cheesecake, you cant say no to an healthy dessert. We can't to go back for lunch and try the big buddha bowl - somebody next to us had it and it looked delicious! read more

Primal Roast is proof that healthy doesn't have to mean boring! We went here for pre-pool munchies, and I was really impressed with it. If you're just in for something quick there is a main till area with some seating, but if you fancy spending some time there head to the back and chill out in the bigger seating area - it's got a good selection of tables, couches and the like, and would be a good place to do some work or read a book (albeit if you're happy with the fact there aren't any windows). The food is brilliant. A small but perfectly formed menu has breakfast and lunch options, all of which look pretty appetising. I went for one of the buddha bowls (pulled paprika pork), and it was great, and for the price a bit of a bargain - you certainly get a lot of food for your money. Add in some great healthy cakes, and the food on offer is a bit special. If you want something relatively healthy for your lunch, or you work in the area, this is a really good option. I feel like I'm going against the popular convention here but I was thoroughly underwhelmed by Primal Roast. I work across the road from it and used to be a regular visitor to the wee cafe that occupied the premises before Primal Roast moved in and loved the fact it was relatively unfussy and did a nice selection of sandwiches and home baking. I turned up around half 1 to find a fairly sparse set of dishes on offer and I think I did a pretty good job of looking a bit confused but the staff didn't seem to pick up on that vibe. I don't know if it was because they had just gone through the lunchtime rush (although I will argue vehemently that 1.30 is still a perfectly acceptable time for your mid day meal) but the staff had clearly decided they were on their downtime which is always disappointing to see when somewhere is still open. Anyway I got a smoked salmon and beetroot salad for a whopping £6. Yes there was a sizeable chunk of tasty smoked salmon but the handful of leaves and dollop of beetroot and apple a top of it didn't seem or taste like £6 worth of work. I'll happily pay for good food but in this instance I was starting to feel a little ripped off. My favourite part of the whole experience was the introduction of Cawton Press Rhubarb and Apple Fizzy Juice. I would quite happily bathe in that stuff, tart and sweet. To me! Whilst places such as Martha's and The Juice Garden pitch their wares at a similar price point I always feel like I'm getting that little bit extra for my buck that unfortunately I felt was missing from Primal Roast. I've since been told that the salad may not have been my best route to go, but for now 3 stars is more than fair for me. read more

This place is AWESOME! Just what Glasgow needs! It promotes itself as a clean eating coffee shop but it so much more than that! Providing hearty healthy guilt free breakfasts and lunches, great hot drinks (Dear Green coffee which is smooth as anything) and sweet treats that you can take back to your desk. They offer takeout service for all their meals which is very handy if you're in a rush. Bring it back to your desk and be the envy of your colleagues who are munching their way through a £3 meal deal! Great social space too with comfy sofas out the back for catching up with your friends over a slice of refined sugar free cake or at the window watching the world go buy. If you have dietary intolerances (such as myself)it is comforting knowing that what they have on offer it suited to you. Many places don't or when you ask staff they don't have a clue, mostly because the food isn't made on site, unlike Primal where they make it all and hot food is cooked fresh, so you ca request that runny egg in your breakfast burrito! If you're into your healthy eating, vegan, fancy a midweek guilt free treat or just love great food you need to check this place out! Worth multiple visits in my eyes! read more

Popped in on a grey wet Glasgow afternoon and wow did it brighten our day!! This place is a class act from start to finish!! From the warm friendly staff and clever quirky basement atmosphere to the super menus (normal, paleo and vegan), wonderful coffee (a local blend by Dear Green) and OMG the Raw Banoffee!!!! Imaginative touches include the more obvious (the shop sign, chairs upholstered in coffee sacks, eclectic wooden counter, jute covered flower jars), the more subtle (the toilet door signs, loo roll holders) and the downright audacious (the dinosaur skull!!). Thank you sweet baby Jesus for healthy food that taste good! First- the space. I love how deceivingly big this place is. Don't let the small storefront put you off as there is tons of seating in the back, both tables and comfy chairs. Second- the food. I thought the food was good. I loved the beet and salmon salad and also the breakfast burrito. The great thing is that there are both meat and vegan options. Overall the food was imaginative and tasty. Third- the drinks. There were tons of options for tea and I hear that they are considering matcha latte on their menu so that will keep me happy. The coffee was also on point. During a brief trip to Glasgow, I stopped in here with my girlfriend for a coffee on our way to the museum. This place brightens up a block where it seems like there isn't much else going on (on a weekend, anyway). We chatted with the staff for a bit, and they were some of the friendliest people we met during our time there. The coffee was great, their branding is super cool, and they gave us a suggestion to stop by Luss on our way to Loch Lomond, which we did and loved it - thanks!
