For years, I had no idea there were any options other than Fabricland here in Edmonton, but found out about Marshall, and had been wanting to get in here for a long time. I don't buy fabric that often, but I happened to be out in this part of town on a Saturday and thought, "Why not?" Years ago, Allan G built me a framed board that I upholstered & added cup hooks to to hang my necklaces in my dressing room on (our 1950s house had NO closet space, so I made one of the bedrooms my IKEA-closeted paradise). However, in my new house, the fabric no longer worked where I wanted to put it. My new bedroom is in silver, gray, and very pale lilac-- sort of Jean Harlow 1930s glamour, so I was looking for some fabric with a nice shimmer or an actual metallic fabric. Found one! Absolutely gorgeous silvery print-- almost like a shantung. My cutter was super friendly and helpful (I can't think in metric). When she asked what I was creating, I had to explain that I had this board, and it was 24 x 26 inches...). When she told me the price I just about fell over, considering the exorbitant prices Fabricland charges. I think I paid around $22.00 for my find. They now have a customer for life, and I'll come back here FIRST before ever spending a dime in another Fabricland. read more

This store has a lot of different fabrics to choose from I could've spent hours upon hours in there. The prices are extremely reasonable with a lot of 9.99 a yard selection. Even their clearance racks are a good deal. The staff is friendly and very approachable and eager to answer any questions you may have. I've spent half of the weekends over the past month or so taking sewing classes so I can up my cosplay game, so I've been going to Marshall's a lot. The prices are reasonable, which is good since I'm new to sewing with a machine and might totally pick up fabric I'm too green to work with and destroy it all. This is a no frills kind of place, but has a great selection of fabric and it's well laid out so it's really easy to find things. I heard from a sewing instructor that the staff here are great if you have questions. I haven't asked myself because it is hard to talk to someone until you're ready to have your fabric cut, since there aren't a lot of staff at the store. Weeknights aren't too bad, but weekends can be busy. Based on my experience, I can say that the staff are friendly and polite. So far, the only fabric I wasn't able to find was faux leather of the exact type I was looking for. Marshall's had faux leather, just not in a pattern or texture I was looking for. I think if you have a general idea in mind for a pattern or want something solid colored in most types of fabric you'll do okay here. If you want a pattern that's very specific, depending on what it is, you might have some trouble finding it. read more

Honestly, I don't know what it is about fabric stores that I love so much - I don't even know how to sew. But I did go here in an attempt to find some fabric for a headboard I was going to make. Marshall's has a huge selection of fabrics and at really good prices. The people are not as helpful as those at fabricland, but that is not an essential thing for me - chances are, people who are shopping here know what they are looking for and if not, they will ask for help. I am always looking for unusual fabrics for upholstery projects and in Edmonton there isn't a huge selection to choose from. The market seems to be dominated by Fabricland which can be pricey. My friend recommended Marshall's and I was not disappointed. Their fabrics have festive prints, pop culture designs and a large selection of (my favourite) tartan fabrics. Be prepared to really search! The store is massive but the fabrics are well laid out. There is a lot to see. It can be hard to find exactly what you want, as there are so many options. Don't miss out on the large discount section at the back of the store, with a rainbow of fabrics to choose from. The haberdashery is not extensive but it has everything you need, from buttons and tassels, to foam and stuffing. The staff are very helpful and there are a lot of them stationed at cutting tables, which means you get through the till in a flash. read more

I make a lot of costumes for my daughter and I. Her dance solos are my favorite. I picked up a tonne of fabric while in California's fabric district but still found some nice dance fabrics here. The staff was very helpful, which was good as the dance fabric was in a couple of diffetent places. I did find the prices for dance wear fabrics a little high expecially since it was a discount store. I would have to check on line to see the difference. The variety of notions was pretty slim. Far and away the best fabric store in Edmonton. They have a huge selection of fabrics, and they are well organized by type of fabric and by colour. If you come in looking for, say, yellow t-shirt knit, you will actually be able to find it easily! They also have the overall best prices I've seen, and none of this bull about a membership. I made my wedding dress out of a beautiful satin charmeuse that was exactly what I was looking for, found there for $7 a metre! Seriously. I now live across town, much closer to the Londonderry Fabricland, but I routinely make the trip to Marshall's instead because it is just. So. Much. Better. Their notions selection is not huge, but they cover the basics pretty well (I even found self-adhesive velcro there the last time I went. You only have to buy one type, not both, and it doesn't accidentally grab other fabrics as easily. It is so cool!) I have made loads of very different types of projects over the years, and they almost always have what I'm looking for. With more fabric stores closing, I need them to stick around! I recently have been taking up sewing. I was told that Marshall was cheaper than Wal-mart for fabric. It was overwhelming I could have spent a whole day in Marshall's. I guess everyone will be getting blankets for Christmas if I keep hitting up bargains here. Kind of a pain to find if you're unfamiliar with the complex it's next to, as you will feel inclined to turn into large parking lot with the brown building, (Union Hall, etc.,) but listen to your GPS when it tries to steer you up into a strange, industrial-looking complex. You will find ample parking out front. The store has a bit of a refurbished warehouse feel, (for good reason,) and it can take a minute or two to figure out where you need to be, but you'll find a ton of fabric not generally on hand at the chain stores (or at least not until recently). The prices may seem a bit high, but remember you're supporting local (and they have a fantastic clearance section spanning the length of the east side of the store). Notions are clean and organized in one place and they even let you rummage through the patterns on your own (just don't be a jerk about it). read more

There was a large selection as promised. However, the prices I found very high. On quilting cottons it was about $16/mtr. Tshirt cottons were about $11-20/mtr. Terry cotton and towel material were all around $15/mtr and the rolls seemed dirty (maybe dusty if no one is buying it). The discount wall was limited. I just find fabricland much cheaper, and if I want unique expensive quilting cottons, I can go online and still save money. The towels annoyed me especially because it's actually cheaper to buy a nice large towel at Walmart than get a cut off their dirty roll. I did buy one thing and after she cut it, the lady thrust it toward me and walked away, with no words the whole time. The entrance doors and washroom are not wheelchair/stroller friendly. That said, the store was packed and all the other reviews seem positive so I'm clearly the minority here. read more

Today was my first visit at Marshall Discount Fabrics. What a wonderful discovery! I was looking for baby ric rac (which is not available elsewhere in colors other than silver and gold). I found so much more as I was shopping around. Having just recently started sewing again this was like entering in fabric heaven. Everything is well organized and clean. The staff is very pleasant and helpful. I will definitely be back to do more shopping in the near future. read more

Let me first put it out there that Edmonton seems to lack decent fabric stores and particularly the boutique type ones that would be a quilter's paradise. With that said, if I'm shopping for fabric, I much prefer Marshall Fabric over the big box of Fabricland! The store itself is much more organized! With plenty of space between shelving units, it is infinitely more comfortable to shop (especially when it gets crowded) in as well. I also don't think they carry the random junk that Fabricland offers (curtains, bedding, etc) but instead have focused on fabric and sewing supplies! Now that's a novel idea?!?! Marshall staff members are helpful and efficient. With cutting stations at the front just before the tills, the lines seem to be shorter and fast moving. They can provide guidance out on the floor and have not been snippy with me or appeared to be bothered by customers needing assistance. (Very different than previous experiences at the competitor.) Finally, the prices are very reasonable, with no need to purchase a membership card or shop on certain days. My only complaint is that the hours can sometimes make it tricky to get there - I feel as though I always want to make a trip on a Sunday afternoon when they're closed. Maybe it's a good excuse to get out of the house on Saturday instead! read more

I bought a bolt of fabric because we needed to use an unknown length for a photo shoot. I kept what we ended up using for the shoot, and brought the bolt back, still in pristine condition. The manager gave a sorry excuse, saying it was too much work for her staff to count the yardage, and wouldn't accept the return. Now I'm stuck with a bolt of fabric minus about 3 yards. I will not be returning to Marshall's for any further purchases. read more

I keep returning to Marshalls again and again. It took a while to figure out the store layout, but it rarely changes, so the fabric types are easy to find now. I like that they are sorted by color as well. The dancewear and swimwear fabric sections really stand out here. So many stretchy fabrics at good prices, and in such an array of colors. There are also about 20 different kinds of fun fur. A nice selection, with some cheap stuff, and some nice stuff. The upholstery section is enormous as well! There are only the very basic notions here, not much in the way of buttons, zippers, or patterns. They do have a suitable amount of serger thread, and at good prices. If you happen to be wanting to buy a certain fabric, and a bunch of it, the boss will try to source it for you. It just might take a month or two! read more

I'm very new to sewing, so this store completely overwhelmed me. The amount of fabric in this store is astronomical. If you're looking for something in particular, it's likely they'll have it. The pricing is similar to fabricland or mom and pop type stores. I would rather shop here than fabricland because there is a much better selection of fabric and the service is much better. I find the store is a little hard to navigate and they could use a bit of an organization overhaul but overall it has what you're looking for. read more

Okay, so I really struggled with what rating to give Marshalls, and after much thought I have settled on the whole 5 stars. I am in no way an expert seamstress, but I do enjoy making quilts for my family and friends and decided that this christmas, thats what everybody would be getting. So the fabric stores in my area have been seeing a lot of me. I typically go to Fabricland because I caved in and bought the membership, which has awarded me some great discounts. However, they did not have the selection of colors I needed, so off to Marshalls I went. The layout of this store is great. It is highly organized and logical, and their swatches are organized in groups of colors, which makes for easy browsing. I was a little confused about where to find prices, but the lady at the front desk I asked to help me was absolutely amazing! She took the time to explain the layout of the store to me, how to find the pricing, directed me to the discount bin, and spent some time helping me look for a fabric in the color I wanted. The only critique I had for this store is that their prices are considerably higher than what I pay with my membership at Fabricland, but the difference is in the customer service and the array of product. My fabric was cut immediately and I did't have to run around looking for a cutting table and stand in a big line. How refreshing! I really commend the staff member that spent so much time helping me, and it's unfortunate I didn't ask her name because she is definitely the person I would direct you to if you need any help. Wide selection of fabric at great prices! They even carry some of the hard to find fabrics such as PVC, and other types of costuming fabrics! There's also a lot of flannel prints to choose from. All the fabrics are typically organized by color. A drawback here is that I noticed that some of the fabrics they stock have sat there for literally years at this point and haven't moved at all. If stuff isn't selling, it's better to just cut your losses and sell it at a discount. They also don't stock as much Asian prints as they used to. I used to get a lot of prints here! Despite the drawbacks I listed above, there's still a great selection of fabric and worth checking out. read more

I only go here when I have to, it's so far from home. The selection is decent, but I find the store to be a bit haphazard. I scraped my hand pretty good on one of their displays yesterday. Giving it a closer look, it really wouldn't be the best display for the sales floor. The prices are good, comparable to Fabricland (but no membership needed!). They do their best to organize their fabrics by type, which is helpful. I like the fact that they have a medium-large selection of swimwear/dance fabric. In the past I haven't found the customer service to be the best. I also don't think they do enough to make their employees stand out. Most of them look like they could be customers. read more

Shopped here for the first time. I've been wanting to for some time. They have an amazing selection of dance/sport/swim fabric average regular price $18. There were fabrics that I had not seen at any Fabricland. Plus they carry every True a Timber product and color. Their regular serger thread price and selection was great. I picked up what was on my list and added some extras. Good selection of fold over elastic and bargain price on what I wanted. Service was good the person who cut my fabric suggested a shop near by where I could get a replacement bobbin cover. My brother was showing me pictures from his last trip here so I had to stop by for my next cosplay costumes and oh man I love him for it. They had a nice section of faux fur and it's just so neat and all the shelves are labelled so if you need spandex or pleather you can almost see where you need it cause the shelves are about 4 1/2 feet tall so I can find it all. The guy who was working there was super knowledgeable about making adjustments and where to make proper cuts. My only complaint is their thread selection was very minimal :( read more

I've been spending a lot of time in fabric stores as I gather things for the wedding dress my friend is making me. This place has been a pretty regular stop on my fabric quest :) They've got a large, really diverse selection of fabrics, including a few rather nice brocades (which I had been looking everywhere for but with little luck- but their selection is nearly comparable to the Indian fabric stores I looked at). The prices are very good. It's a bit out of the way, but I find it worthwhile to make the trip anyway. It's also a little dusty in there, and their selection of trims could be improved upon, but overall I'm a fan :) It's a good place to go if you want something a little different. read more

Marshall Discount Fabrics is cheap fabric heaven for all the sewers and quilters out there. For a fabric store though, I was surprised how little some of the employees knew about sewing supplies. I'm just learning to sew and the class I'm enrolled in gave us a supply list. Given Marshall's great reputation as a fabric retailer in town, I went in search of basic sewing supplies. When I googled some of the supplies, the bobbins I was looking for seemed widely available and well-known (they are popular on Amazon and sold online at Walmart). They didn't have these but instead sold 2 types of plastic bobbins, one for most Japanese machines and one for a few styles of Singer machines. None of the employees had heard of the type of bobbins I was talking about. I asked them what the actual physical difference between the bobbins they had was and was met with blank stares. Then, I told them the make of the machine I have (brother; not exactly an unusual brand!) and they didn't know if that was a Japanese machine or not (google says it is, FYI). I honestly would have expected more knowledgeable employees for a fabric store where the main purpose people are buying their items are for sewing. Maybe I'm asking too much? In any case, the employee said I could get an exchange if it didn't work (I know I'll be back for cheap fabric purchases in the future) so that was nice. There is unparalleled fabric selection here. This isn't a complete sewing store - so don't come here for patterns or notions (there are some, but not very many), but the savings when buying fabric make it well worth the trip. They are particular strong on home decor fabrics. Staff have been helpful, even to the point of recommending other stores when I needed large buttons for a project that they didn't stock. read more

Today was my first visit to Marshalls Store in Edmonton and I have to say it was the most disappointing visit I have ever had to any store in Canada. There was no customer service at all. The staff member I met was rude and completely unhelpful. I was the first customer in the store this morning at 9.03 am(they open at 9). There were 3 staff members at the service desk, none of whom acknowledge my entry to their store. Once I had found the fabric I was looking for, I approached a member of staff who was rolling a piece of fabric and explained what I wanted to do with the fabric in a commercial setting and asked if she could give me some samples. Her first reaction was a major frown and a raised eyebrow as to my explanation and then said she could give me 10cm samples. I said that would be great and told her if any of the samples worked then it could be a big order. I strolled away back towards the area I found the fabric, assuming she would follow with a scissors to cut the samples for me. About 10 minutes later with no sign of her following me, another customer approached her with a roll of fabric she needed to have cut. This staff member then took the pole from the centre of that roll of fabric, walked towards me to replace it on the rack, ignored me and then returned to rolling her original piece of fabric. I was stunned that she made no effort to help me and with that I walked out of the store, never will I return there..... It was disgraceful. I work in a customer service industry and it is by far the worst store I have ever been in. Not only have they lost a potentially large order but this is the first time I have ever posted an online review and it is obviously not a place to recommend. read more

I recently went in the store to purchase some vinyl tablescloths. Wow, the customer service was absolutely horrible. The ladies were quite rude and did not want to help. I had to take the heavy rolls off the rack myself. These rolls are put on the rack with a metal rod. I could have easily put out my back or even wrecked something considering I had to strain to lift up the one roll from the bottom. When I want to ask for help, the lady Christine looked at me and said, well take a cart and get them yourself. It's too bad because they have good quality in vinyl tablescloths compared to Walmart. read more

So, So disappointed. I spent a large amount of money on different polka dot flannel at full price of 18.99 a meter. Took it home and when I started to use it I noticed that the centre fold of the fabric had faded so all the meters and meters of various flannel is unusable. 8 meters x 18.99 = a big waste of money. I can't go back to the store as I was travelling when I made my purchase. I have sent them an email and no response. read more
