Wanted to take home some crabs after a trip to Virginia and this spot happend to be on our route home. It was a little shake on the road but don't be fooled. I called in my order and the lady was very nice on the phone. When we got to the place, the nicest man on earth greeted me and assured me that our crabs would be ready soon. I said no rush since we just called but he came out a few minutes later. The crabs were the meatiest medium sized crabs! The spice was just right and the crab meat was so good and fresh. On the drive back from Chincoteague, we passed by a crab shack advertising half a bushel of crabs for like $60. That seeded the thought that resulted in a stop at Cranky Crab. We stop by to see what the price were, but Cranky Crab is a very small operation so we felt obliged to order. They definitely weren't as cheap, but the proprietor, "Biscuit" explained that was probably the price for the smaller crabs. The ones here were 7 or 8 inches across (#1s or extra large and very meaty males). We decide to get only a dozen and it took about 20 mins to get them steamed. While we were waiting, my 8 yo asks if he could see the equipment to which Biscuit obliges. He even gives my son a little popsicle from the freezer, which was much appreciated on a hot 90F summer day. He's a grandpa, so maybe that's why he's good with kids. With a nickname like Biscuit and a clean crew cut, I thought for sure he was in the military, but he is/was a firefighter and adopted his the nickname in honor of his dad. Overall, I'm glad we stopped by. The prices might be a bit big for some people, but so are the crabs. Stretch your dollar and save all the crab shells, bits and pieces to make a crab stock. I've been to Kent Island a few times and had crab at one of the crab houses on the water which is a nice experience if that's what you're looking for. If you want great crab from great people, stop here. While we waited a guy came by (they also live on the property) to drop off a bunch of extras he had from catering. They insisted on giving us some of this amazing meat plus green beans from their garden because they had so much. If you're looking for crabs on the shore, Cranky Crab is where you need to be. I love it here, not only because the location is super convenient to me, but because the crabs are always full, seasoned well, and priced fairly! To top it off, the staff is INCREDIBLY nice. If you're looking for something that they don't have, they'll give you a recommendation. They even bring your crabs to your car for you after you pay! But most importantly, everyone expects to pay a decent amount for crabs. I swear, every time I called around to get pricing, the Cranky Crab always comes in lowest. We were supposed to have a crab feast with our friends in Arnold over the summer but all of the prices seemed insane. When Cranky Crab came in lower than everyone else, we switched plans and had our friends to come us. Nothing is worse than spending a ton of money on crabs that aren't seasoned well and are practically empty. Never had an issue with Cranky Crab so I'll never order anywhere else. We ordered steamed shrimp and it was amazing but it wasn't seasoned. Didn't seem like like it. My husband went to get it and they didn't ask so he didn't say anything. He figures they would steam it med. Some shrimp looked like there was a little seasoning on it but others did not. I guess you have to ask. This is the worst crab place in Maryland. I called to order a 1/2 bushel of crabs and requested generous seasoning. Cricket (employee) confirmed the order. I ordered medium crabs. Explaining I was traveling from a distance and inquiring about the quality of their product; I was assured by Cricket, who stated she was the co-owner, that the crabs were freshly cooked. I arrived home to find baby crabs, priced at medium with not even enough seasoning to give them taste. I immediately called to express my displeasure with the amount of seasoning and the fact that some of the crabs were refrigerator cold. Cricket specifically told me that they only freshly steam crabs , so the crabs being refrigerator cold is totally unacceptable. When I called, the owner instructed me to go ahead and bring them back. After following his instructions to return the crabs, they said they do not return money or fix orders. Do not go patronize this business unless you want to spend $135.00 for something not worth eating! If it were possible, I would give this business a negative 5*. read more

Stopped here for crab today. I'm renting an Air B&B near by and thought crab was a must when in Rome/Maryland. Pulled up and was surprised to see it's a little crab shack business to the side of someone's home. So cute!!! Loved it. It felt so cozy and adventurous. The shack is an open space and made for carry out. I didn't see any signs with a menu but also didn't explore much and was greeted right away. So welcoming but not in an overbearing creepy way. The man behind the counter told us about a special going on and probably would have shown or told us about the rest of the menu, but I was honest with him and let him know I don't typically eat crab and have no idea how to order it, but was clearly excited to eat!! I assume in seeing how excited I was about the crab experience he told us they were a carry out spot but down the road not even 5 minutes we could sit outside in a restaurant and order crab and beer and look out at the water. My husband and I decided that was a great idea and so even though we didn't order and eat here, the advice was awesome and totally non selfish which was dope! So thank you cool cranky crab shack dude! We ended up at Fisherman's Crab Deck and it was great!!!!!
