To my Yelp friend Dean C - Found this great UK brewery. Sorry, but it is kinda far away from the downtown tourist London area. But it is worth it since it is a "brewery mall." Quality/Quantity - Small simple menu done very well. Including the beer, good beer! My self made flight was good. I was worried that I ordered too many... All my beers were good. Can I suggest adding flights to your menu? Guest beers are also offered, see picture. Kegged wines, wines on tap. Pizza was great, sorry if I offended the "chef" by asking for parmesan cheese. I guess extra parmesan cheese is an Italian thing, not a UK thing...? We ordered the sweet potato, stilton & walnut pizza. Gluten free and vegan options are also available. Atmosphere - Amazing space, huge, indoor/outdoor, two stories, etc. Also outdoor on the river. Lounge area, picnic tables, "pallet" benches, barrel tables, etc. Semi open kitchen, see picture. Good people watching space. You can walk to the other breweries if you want to try more. Plenty of clean bathrooms on both floors. Also thanks for the outside/separate sinks in the upstairs restrooms. Dog friendly. Monthly events. DJ's on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Service - Menus and prices clear and plentiful. Popped by here last Sunday and found the industrial environment buzzing. Cavernous space, cool music playing (synthie-nu wave stuff) and intriguing pizza selection. I settled on the Kashmiri dal and whilst I was skeptical the bartender assured me it was delicious. And she was spot on although deeming it pizza is a misnomer: it's more of a crispy flatbread. Anyway the flavours were delicious!!! I was really skeptical of how the dal, banana slices and chili flakes would all go together but it was spicy, fragrant and tough to not eat all in one go (got it for takeaway). Really cool space on the canal as well with lots of seating indoors and a bit more limited outdoors. Almost right across from the overground. Plus dog-friendly!! read more

Great place for beers. The patio is amazing as it has so much energy. The food is amazing too especially the pizzas.

It's been three and a half months since I've been here but I can't stop thinking about the great beer, pizza, and conversations I had here. It's right next to the canal, and both the outdoor and indoor seating are great choices (most of the brewery's walls are glass - so it feels like you're outside the whole time). There are ducks and swans that hang out near the brewery in the canal, and you are allowed to bring your dog to the brewery . I recommend this place to anyone who loves beer, cool and interesting pizzas, and who likes a touch of nature. read more

We went to the crate with two kids, late in the evening on a Saturday. The place was packed, but the really nice security guards let us know we could sit on the boat. Their were places outside, but it was cold, and the boat seemed nice. In the end, the boat was awesome. Excellent pizzas and great beer. Overall, a positive experience. Extra points to the gents by the fire pit that steered us to the boat. read more

This place has very good pizza, but on a sunny Tuesday afternoon, after work, it took 45 minutes to get our pizza. Very flavourful, but some are a little light on the toppings. But the worse thing was the DIRTY glasses! Twice I had to ask for a clean glass, one without lip marks, one without fingerprints and food you could feel on the outside of the glass. One that didn't have "dishwasher residue" on it. I know you're a busy place Crate, but this was just gross!! read more

This is just round the corner from our flat but it's taken me a long time to visit for some reason. Had a veggie pizza with courgette, grated potato, peppers and onion (no cheese). SO GOOD! Awesome crispy base and great flavours especially with a bit of salt and chilli oil. read more

This is how the locals live. Tons of young people hangout, grabbing a beer and meeting friends. It's an old industrial building converted into a brewery that leaves a lasting impression. My husband and I wanted to see the old Olympic stadium and found ourselves crossing over a bridge by Crate and decided to stop in. The brewery has a great atmosphere and a lot of brew selections to choose from. We ordered a pizza, grabbed a couple of beers and sat outside on the picnic tables by the river. The atmosphere was the best part of the place, but the pizza was actually really good. Most places that mark themselves as a brewery fall short on the food expectations but Crate did not. We got the prosciutto pizza and were not disappointed. This place is definitely worth stopping by. read more

Pizza and beer. Quite a simple, yet tasty combo. Came here for a work event and I was pleasantly surprised. It's a total hipster operation. Grab a spot on the tables outside and go in to order a nice pint of craft beer and get one of their awesome pizzas. I finished a whole pizza to myself, so I don't recommend sharing. I ordered the Moroccan lamb and it was glorious! Perfect balance between meat, spice, vegetables, and the pine nuts was a nice addition. I tried the wheat beer and it was good. The only downside of this place is that it's so far east. Took a while to get to, but the Hackney Wick overground station is pretty close, so that helps. I'll definitely come back. read more

Fun place to come at night, but it gets very, very crowded. It can take ages to get a drink at the main bar. This place draws an eclectic crowd -- no surprise there, it's smack dab in the middle of Hackney. I didn't try any pizza, but from what I observed, it seems like the price tag is a bit high for the amount of food you actually get. If it's a nice night, there's a bit of space outside, but I have to admit that I was a little concerned on behalf of all the drunk hipsters teetering about on the edge of the canal... on the other hand, maybe that would have been hilarious, who knows :P read more

The gentrification of Hackney Wick is alive and thriving but these guys at Crate are serving up the masses with exactly what everyone wants. At the intersection of crass and cool - these guys have the best taste in curating a delicious experience for the heart, mind, and soul. And also the gut - these guys are casually blowing UP the kombucha scene with some delicious Jarr kombucha cocktails and straight up gut-busters. If you don't know, ask. Independent brewery canalside in Hackney Wick. We've been here a few times for lunch during the week as it tend to be nice and quiet. You'll find it rammed to overflowing summer evenings and weekends and just rammed and noisy the rest of the year. Full bar, excellent house beers, acceptable coffee and crunchy super thin pizza. The pizzas on the menu are all very 'hip' except for the token margherita. It's nice to see something different but a shame when it's the entire menu. I went for the Mediterranean lamb, which tasted more like something from Edgeware road than a pizza. Except Edgeware road would have served it with a slice of lemon which would have been good with the lamb. It was tasty but didn't really feel like pizza. MY friend had the margherita that tasted good and traditional. They all come in one size, which is generous, and I was unable to finish. They offer take away but I didn't go for a doggy bag as they extra thin crust wouldn't be good the next day I don't think. There's a large sofa in the corner and the rest of the tables are large seating at least 10. Not ideal for an intimate date but perfect for a sociable evening out. Dogs are welcome. read more

I discovered this place walking to the Olympic stadium from the nearby overground stop. I am glad I stopped in. Place was super busy but the staff was quick and the patrons pretty friendly. They have an indoor and 2 outdoor areas to sit and enjoy a beer. One is next to the canal and other faces the courtyard which is a shared parking lot with other business in the complex. I tried 1 beer and it was pretty good. The pizza being delivered to nearby groups around looked good. It was the flatbread variety of pizza. When I was getting my beer, I overheard the staff mention the wait time for food 40 plus minutes. It was a nice day out so this is a great place to enjoy a beer and sit outdoors and they had a lot of space but it was super busy. read more

Came here after a slide on the Orbit and although I was surprised we had such a long wait for pizza given we had booked a table (and those ordering had to wait ages at the bar) the pizza was pretty good (decent base, although would avoid the weirder toppings and stick with the good margherita/salami options) and I got both Coke from a glass Bottle and a delicious pint of stout. Might not go out of my way to return but a good shout in the area. Bear in mind the music gets fairly loud, it's not a great place for a quiet chat. read more

LOVE this place. Sure it can be overcrowded but I love the vibe it has - great music and DJ's playing most weekends, friendly and welcoming staff, an amazing outside area with long tables that you can grab AND they serve amazing pizzas. I definitely recommend the ham pizza (can;t remember the full name but it's amazing! Their concept is simple - good craft beer, great location right by the canal and good food. When you add that with Hackney, you get the perfect hipster location and although I don't really class myself as hipster it's definitely somewhere I like to hang! The only thing I don't like is their toilets. There's constantly a queue and they're unisex - not that this is an issue but I just always feel a tad uncomfortable and they just always seem to be a bit messy! But, if it's a sunny Saturday/Sunday or week day night and you live in the area, this is where you should be! read more

Crate Brewery is a great Summer Location. Long tables and benches by the canal while you soak up the sun. It's busy and buzzing, basking in the sun and you can find yourself enjoying conversations with those sharing your bench. The vibe is mellow but stinulating. Great atmosphere. Outside is rustic/industrial and inside keeps ou the industrial theme with some nice touches. Like the bedspring lightshades - who'd have thought a bedspring could look beautiful! So, as mentioned, Crate brew their own beer, which includes Lager, Ale and Cider. In addtion to spirits, bottled drinks and wines. They offer a great selection of pizzas which, in my humble opinion, are one of the best I've had in London so far. My friend got the Sage and Truffle for which I got food envy! And I got the Courgette, Feta, Red Onion and Gremolata. Great falvour combinations and perfect portion size - the crust is very thin so you don't get quite as much of a carb bloat afterwards. I pre booked their premium tour, but was running late and almost decided not to go. In the last minute I decided to brave the overground and just show up late - if they let me in great, if not, 30 quid down the drain but at least I tried. They let me in of course, and caught me up with the beers. I met an amazingly nice English family who were kind enough to let me sit with them in the brewery bar later for another two pints and pizzas (which were very good). I definitely recommend anyone with an interest in beer to visit them. read more

Pizza and good beer - what can go wrong? I really want to give these guy a 3.5... So bear that in mind when reading this review... I'm swinging between loving it and saying it's mediocre... I adore the crate brewery, the pizza is absolutely amazing. I love the courgette, feta and red onion and the sweet potato, Stilton and walnut... It's some of the best pizza I've had! Last time we visited we ordered an extra pizza to take home as we weren't that hungry, needless to say we finished it all before leaving! Yes it's that good! The beer selection is also great, and the staff very knowledgeable and on hand to help. I also love the raw style of the venue, the mattress spring light shades, the brick work, concrete and industrial, functional, feel of the venue... Also it's right next to the river, so if you can get a table you've got a stunning view of the canal... and with big tables it's great for socialising, large parties and groups. However there are some pit falls... It's SO busy! Most nights (and in particular the weekends), you can't get a table, you have to wait for ages up to five deep at the bar and wait times for pizza can be anything up to 40 minutes! Also the toilets are a complete disgrace, so messy and unhygienic and the queues for these (even on the quieter nights), is still outrageous. They've installed some across the parking lot, but these are in a similar state. So overall I love what these guys have to offer and I full endorse their wonderful craft beer and food... but I feel they've a victim of their own success as the crowds ruin the experience for me. read more

It's impossible to overlook one the trendiest spots in Hackney Wick, namely Crate Brewery. Crate is guaranteed to be heaving with revellers, but the staff's ability to cope with the throngs has significantly improved over the past years. They brew onsite and have released a commendable and growing range, including their sessionable sour and black IPA. The brewery is idyllically located canal-side on the River Lee and offers rustic wood-oven pizzas to hungry wayfarers and ferrymen, who dock their canal boats feet from the bar. Crate now offers tours of their brewery and if you're lucky, you'll be there on a weekend when Mick's Garage is open and swinging, which is located just across the yard from the brewery. From 18:00 on Friday and noon on Saturday and Sunday, this is a pop-up space offering some fantastic Middle Eastern street food from Shuk Shuk, a meaty purveyor and smokehouse from the talented minds of Josh Katz and Mattia Bianchi, who founded the highly regarded BBQ joint, Berber & Q. In addition to this, Mick's Garage offers a fermented tea bar called Jarr Bar, where kombucha- set to be a huge trend in the coming months- is served in a gamut of flavours (or with alcohol). All of this is set to the soundtrack of a DJ spinning decks on the roof- the vibe is summer, the 500 person capacity means it fills up quickly and things get raucous. We found this place while in London for an event at London stadium. Being that I'm from New York I am a pretty hard judge on pizza, but theirs didn't disappoint! The beers were also great, my husband enjoyed the ones on cask and I had the IPAs. They have a bunch of seating but it did get busy close to game time with a line to order. read more

Hidden gem in Hackney Wick, definitely worth travelling for, if you dont live local! Great place right next to the canal, with a lovely pizza menu (thin, crispy delicious pizza - a mix of traditional flavours and experimental - truffle/potato/white pizza) and a great choice of cider and beer. Really love this place. Despite lack of chairs and the overly hipster clientele, you can't really say this place is less than 5*. Between 6 we shared 4 pizzas... sage & truffle (exquisite); sweet potato & walnut (taste explosions); salami (had a kick); minced lamb (deliciously spiced). I went here for a pizza, so Crate is being reviewed as a pizza restaurant first. Had this been a review of the bar aspect it would score more highly. So anyway, I had high hopes for this place, having been told by the friend who brought me here that this was the best pizza in London. The problem is it wasn't. In fact it wasn't even close. When I was young my parents used to take us to a restaurant in Wembley called Chetna's that used to be a Pizzaland (and is now a Nando's). They used to offer pizza on the menu because they happened to have a pizza oven, and it was done to appease children who weren't happy about the vegetarian Indian food they specialised in. I had many a pizza here, being a kid, but they were nothing like as good as the likes of the Deep Pan Pizza Co. or Pizza Express, or even Pizza Hut! What does this have to do with Crate, you may ask? Well, Crate's pizzas are a bit like the ones I used to have at Chetna's. this would be excusable if their speciality was some other cuisine, but it's the only thing they serve! All 4 of our pizzas were overlooked. The spicy salami one was mediocre at best and seemed to have no tomato sauce on it. The chicken laksa one tasted a bit like eating a curry with a giant cheese naan, and the lamb one was well, just weird. All were dry. The only reason I've given them 2 stars instead of 1 is that as a bar it has a great atmosphere, and it's not as bad if you go there with the expectation of it being a bar that happens to serve pizza... read more

Came here on a Saturday night for drinks with friends and this place was packed! The outside patio with tables by the canal was full of people, and inside was even more so. I imagine on a sunny summer day it would be absolutely mental! I mainly had wine, which was all between £4-5 per glass, but I heard lots of great things about the beer. Trouble was, it was hard to get close to the bar because the queue was sooooooo long! Not enough space to order and not enough bartenders to deal with the crowd. It would easily take over 10 minutes to get served, which is a pretty long time to be away from your friends! My boyfriend and I split a pizza, the Middle Eastern lamb. I really enjoyed it, but he wasn't a fan at all. For £12, to be fair, it isn't enough food. One person could easily finish the pizza as the slices are small and the crusts are very thin. We split it and it wasn't nearly good enough to be dinner. Still, the crust was very crisp which I love, and I enjoyed the flavors of the toppings (lamb mince, pine nuts, spinach, tomato, parmesan, yum!) But since the crust is so thin, after a while the toppings weigh it down a bit and the slices got a bit heavy/soggy. Still, I'd happily eat here again....but maybe just as an appetizer or a bar snack. I wouldn't come for dinner, as you'd need to order so many pizzas to sufficiently feed your group! Place got very loud with music as the night wore on - so many people talking, plus the music, and then we were all shouting at each other to be heard. Also there's only one bathroom, I think maybe two stalls, and the queue was so long! I'd definitely visit again for the drinks and a snack, but try to avoid really busy nights as the crowds make it quite off-putting. A great place for good beer on a nice day, with a good crowd for people-watching. The space is classic Hackney Wick - barely converted warehouse with high ceilings and industrial fixtures. There's a large outdoor area with varied seating arrangements right next to the canal that's perfect for a sunny afternoon. And bike parking on one edge, so you can keep your Charge Plug close at hand. The people (both employees and patrons) are solidly hipster, but all pretty relaxed rather than pretentious. We saw dogs, blue hair, dozens of tattoos, babies, tourists, and locals all mixed together. The atmosphere was lively but chill; no lads yelling at the TV. There was a DJ spinning a good eclectic low-key mix, but not blasting it. The beer is very good, almost up there with the great stuff being cranked out by Beavertown a little farther north (in my opinion, of course). I tried an in-house Sour and a Wheat that were both flavorful and well-executed. They also have a variety of interesting bottled beers from other places, filling out a pretty extensive menu overall. And the pizza looks really good. Crate is an incredible bar in a fantastic location, directly next to the canal with a decent amount of outside seating this place is great for a summers evening. The bar offers a great selection of locally brewed bears and ciders. I have to say though some can be strong and have led too a few Monday morning hangovers I wasn't expecting. Inside the decor can be described as typically hipster with industrial influences. All the staff are incredibly friendly and very well informed about what's on offer. The pizzas they do are some of the best in london, cooked fresh and with a continually changing menu there is always something new too try. It does get busy and on occasion when the bar is busy they will close the kitchen early so it's worth checking wait times for food. I stopped in with the family and a local friend while visiting London. His son had recommended it. The canal side setting is very nice with some great street art across the water. It's a great summer location, right by the canal. There's a great choice of beer (though some at £6+ a pint is expensive) and the pizzas are great, if a little light on toppings. I'd certainly visit again, maybe not on an empty stomach though. read more

It's hipster central in the middle of nowhere. Very good IPA, my friend said his spicy salami pizza was spot on so they must be doing something right. The brewery has really made an effort to be cool. Think warehouse meets exposed brick meets furniture from the skip. I particularly like the lamp shades made from mattress springs. The Crate Brewery is somewhere I'd been meaning to visit for ages. I was already a fan of their beers in particular the Stout and what better way than drinking beer alongside what I expected would be an equally nice pizza. I visited on a Sunday evening which was quite busy but there was still a couple of free tables. The beer choice is very good and the friendly knowledgeable bar staff offer the opportunity to try different beers before ordering. I chose the Pepperoni pizza as it's normally a safe bet anywhere however about half am hour later when it arrived I wish I hadn't. There are lots of great reviews about the Pizza on here so perhaps I was just unlucky. I'd certainly visit again for the beer but maybe skip the pizza next time. read more

People are good looking, space is good looking, pizza is DAMN good looking...this place is easy on the eyes. Getting to Crate is a bit of an adventure if it's your first time and you're hacking out directions as you go on a close-to-being-no-more-useful-than-a-doorstop iPhone. We took a bus, then walked, then got lost, then found a nice couple willing to point us in the right direction. When we got there we knew we were right: people were pouring in and out of Queens Yard, even though it was a gloomy Sunday night. Located right on the canal with extensive inside and outside seating, Crate has an industrial feel that made my friend and I turn to each other and say..."is this Brooklyn?". BUT NO. No, it's also very Hackney. In the best of ways. DJ spinning, pints on offer (rye highly recommended) and don't miss those pizzas. That is an order. They are cracker-thin, but the toppings are really nicely chosen. Sure, you could go for a standard margarita, but also delicious? Courgette with feta and mint. YEP YEP DO THAT. Dogs welcome, kids running around, but it still has a 20/30-something hipster (yeah, I used that word; it's just helpful shorthand for the description) vibe. Gets full, fast, so if you're coming in a large group I believe they take reservations for posses of 10 or more. Set in a highly industrial area and also beside the canal, this modern-looking brewpub presents an interesting contrast to its surroundings. Crate offers a decent but limited range of house beers; on my last visit they had, in bottle or on cask or keg, a lager, a bitter, a golden ale, an IPA and a stout; however, they do sporadically release a one-off. The house beers aren't bad, but neither are they terribly exciting. The venue itself is quite attractive. The interior I would describe as industrial chic. Outside there are a few picnic tables, at which you can sit and watch the canal. On my Saturday afternoon visit there were quite a few families here, almost all of them enjoying pizzas - Crate offers a dynamic range of pizzas, which are very good. The staff is friendly and one of the guys spoke to me at length about their house beer. Aside from the Crate beers, the bar offers a solid range of guest breweries, both on tap and in bottle. This place can get insanely busy, so I would advise not visiting during peak hours. Crate is located less than five minutes away (walking) from the Hackney Wick Overground station. read more
