Who else is up for a 5-hour dinner extravaganza? This was one for the ages, and Bird in Hand held all the cards to make it a special night. Harken back to the days of yore when we all had five hours to spend eating, drinking, and being merry. The upstairs room with giant family table was just the place for our group of 20. I was surprised anybody could keep up with who ordered what. Star of the night was our lovely server, who put up with the endless musical-chairs action to get people what they ordered (mind you I didn't participate in that revelry; I kept my alleged rightful place at table's head, people can come to me). But the rest of the group swapped like it was speed-dating day. Since we were "private dining" the menu was a little smaller, but still had plenty of choices. The salmon was light, excellent, flavorful. Others enjoyed the Ragu and Salsiccia, and even the Vegana looked tasty. I smartly saved room for dessert (mine and a friends since that's how I roll). Actually somebody ordered a cheesecake and vanished so I added some of that to the list after polishing off my "selection of ice creams" (yes plural is always better with ice cream. Thankfully I had enough sense to let my colleague finish the last bottle of wine and didn't follow them all down the street to the next place afterward, leaving me to savor the upper-room experience at Bird. read more

Cute little restaurant in a suburban area. Quaint bar and lighting and the food was to die for! We shared the goat cheese salad and crispy salmon over risotto. Of course, we found this location on Yelp, so it was a must since it was w/in walking distance. Is it terrible to say that I want to marry the cook of these delightful little dishes? At first, I was quite skeptical because the ingredients for each dish aren't something we are accustom to, however, we gave it a shot. We tried 3 different dishes and ordered a pizza to-go. Each arrived within minutes of each other and overall, were all out within 5mins of ordering. *Fast Service* The roasted beef exceeded any expectations we had. It was like sitting down at the dinner table to have one serving at your Grandmas. The flavor was intense, the meat was juicy, and the carrot/mashed side was perfectly portioned. I wish I could eat this over and over. The 2nd was Mac and Cheese croquettes with some sort of spicy orange sauce. I didn't want to share this. Two little balls weren't enough. It had such a calm yet spicy bite to it. The third little dish was the Hummus. We love hummus and was pleasantly surprised, because if you're a Hummus lover than you know that restaurant hummus can be hit or miss. This was a huge HIT. It appeared very plain with some large chickpeas, but it was spot on. Lastly, the atmosphere...ahhh...sooo charming. I love the great outdoors and all you see is WOOD. Its rustic, and has a bistro feel with the small tables and chairs, paired up against an extremely LONG couch. Other areas have bench/pillow seated tables. I got takeaway pizza as they sadly do not deliver, however my attempts at being my own Deliveroo cyclist failed. Pizza box went sideways then upside down before I opened it at home. Not the prettiest sight to behold, but the quality still came through! I got the Salsiccia pizza which comes with truffle paste, tuscan sausage, porcini mushrooms, parsley and truffle oil. My was it good!! Amazing flavour combination and I nearly ate the whole thing! The only complaint is that the crust is rather thin. You cannot hold it up to eat but have to use a fork and knife unless you do the New York style roll. I would like it slightly thicker, however it was cooked perfectly. The Bird in Hand is a cute gastropub tucked away in a quiet neighborhood. We came here on a Saturday evening, and it was more crowded than we expected with eople had spilling onto the streets outside. We didn't make reservations but luckily there was a free table when we got there. It might be useful to make reservations if you plan to come here with a group. We ordered the chicken liver parfait, stuffed courgette flower, bavette with asparagus, ham croquettes and baby back ribs. Everything was outstanding, but the courgette flower and baby back ribs were probably my favorite dishes. We didn't try the pizza, which seemed to be what most patrons were eating, but there's always next time. A little pricey for a 'neighborhood pub,' but in reality it's a very nice gastropub that just happens to be in a neighborhood! read more

An extremely busy local spot that is also dog friendly. The food is tapas style so order 3 dishes per person. The pizza looked very good but we went for about 11 different dishes from tuna, ox tongue, stuffed courgette, sea trout, humus and a few others. Everything we had was very well presented, very well cooked and really enjoyable, I left with my appetite sated but not overly full. Good wine but limited beet selection. Came here for dinner on a Friday evening. Really lucky to get a table as it got crowded a short time later. I had wine rather than beer and went for Picpoul de Pinet which was v good, Plenty of options on this menu for small plates. They bring them out whenever they're ready and encourage sharing. Got to try lots of different plates and each one was delicious. We tried the smoked haddock croquettes, the flatbread with hummus, courgette flower stuffed with goats curd and honey, trout with chorizo and tuna carpaccio on charcoal toast. My top three were the tuna carpaccio, the flatbread and the stuffed courgette flower. The staff are really nice. Its a dog friendly place so it was really nice to see dogs popping in and out. They may serve Italian here, but I felt like I had the traditional English bar/restaurant experience. The ambiance both inside and outside (a few outdoor seating options) was on point. They have a nice selection of beer, wine from all across Europe and cocktails. The food is delicious. Had the grilled squid, not gamey and definitely not too salty, which I liked. Really warm and cosy feel to this pub (gastropub) as soon as we stepped inside. I had read good things about the pizza here and their chorizo pizza did not disappoint. Our whole group really enjoyed their meals and I have definitely got the pub in mind to bring people to in future. I wasn't expecting to like it quite as much as I did because generally the beer selection is a major criteria for me and that is one area where they were lacking. (Just the ubiquitous Doom Bar on cask). When a place has so many other charms though I am happy to throw my lot in with the wine drinkers and just enjoy myself. There were some families in attendance but with remarkably well behaved children. The worst part of the visit was me leaving my rucksack behind. This is a personal favourite of mine. And many others given how it's often busy, even on a Tuesday at 9pm. :-) The atmosphere is super charming and cozy, yet somehow refined in a rustic. Trust me, it definitely works for them. It's Italian, and it seems to staff a log of actual Italians which is always a good thing. It seems like most people get their excellent pizzas, which are of the thin, crispy crust variety. Definitely my preference. What a wonderful surprise. The Bird In Hand looks like a pub for moneyed west Londoners and indeed many of its clientel seem to come from this set. But really, the Bird In Hand is a kick-ass pizzeria. A pricey pizzeria (think £13 for a pizza), but a kick-ass one. The pizzas are huge, at least 14 inches in diameter. The toppings are well-chosen (the walnut, gorgonzola and artichoke Rustica was a stand-out), generous but restrained at the same time. Far too many pizzas are ruined by excessive amounts of cheese - not here. And the base is thin and perfectly cooked. The choice of beer is limited (Doom bar, Leffe, some lagers), the wine list looked better if nothing to get too excited about. The pizza though is what I'd be returning for. Wow! read more

I feel pretty blessed because there is an awesome selection of pubs around where I live. This is one of them. The staff is very friendly, the pub is spacious, and the selection of board games was very much appreciated. Seriously, who doesn't enjoy a good game of trivial pursuit while chowing through a delicious burger, and celebrating victory with a pints? There are also people who come here with their laptops to work, so it's safe to say it isn't a raucous pub, but I kind of like it that way. Anyway, I hear that Bird in Hand has a rockin' pub quiz every Sunday, which I fully intend on trying out. But, overall, very good food (their burger was spectacular, and the chips as well!) and very nice atmosphere. Would highly recommend. read more

This is an OK pub, but not one of my favorites in the neighborhood. Perhaps it was because dinner service did not start until six, or perhaps because I felt like an outsider sitting at the bar while the locals joked about their life problems, but something just didn't feel like the traditional, comfortable London pub. The main benefit of this pub is it's location in the middle of a quiet neighborhood with very little to distract you from the food and beer. It's London, so it's expensive. That will be a common theme throughout all London reviews (that I do at least). The interior is OK, perhaps more of an Italian feel than a traditional pub. So if you are in to that type of decor, you'll like this place. Since they didn't have dinner until six, I snacked on some of their little plates, which were good. Overall, it was a good experience but just not the best. I get the feeling that it's more for the local crowd, which I love usually. But in this case, it's safe to say this place made me feel a little more like a tourist than I wanted to. read more

We stayed with a few blocks of this pub/restaurant. Couldn't believe how spot-on the Yelp reviews were - 5 star, all the way! The ambience was amazing - brick, wood and cozy with incredible ambient lighting. The food was incredible and was small tapas plates. They suggested 3-4 plates per person, and we ended up being satiated with 6 for a couple. The beef rib was incredible, as were the scallops. The fig and cheese plate is to die for and a must have. I'm a big fan of Italian food and this place does it very well. We went to have dinner and chose to have some prosecco, wine and olives to start. The starter olives were very generous, so we had no problem waiting for the late member of our group. During this time the waiters were amazingly attentive without being annoying. So nice. The menu has the most delicious options and it was rather difficult to make a decision. In the end I went with the pizza with the truffle oil ... How could I resist. Most of us did as the pizzas are huge and amazingly crispy. One friend had risotto with shrimps which I was told was delicious as well. It's in Brook Green so it's not cheap. Even the margherita pizza is in the double digit price range. It's a Jasper Gorst pub though, and this is a place people travel to for the food, not just to have something to sponge up the alcohol they've consumed. Gastro, yes. The food is great, the beef steak thingy and all the pizzas I've tried here have been absolutely brilliant, completely worth the price. The bar area is a bit small though, I wouldn't recommend this as a place to have a quiet drink if you're not eating unless it's early midweek as it can get fairly busy by Brook Green standards (i.e. you may have to stand up). Not much of a variation of beers on tap, but a good wine list, and I suppose that's what the clientele are really after. read more

Having not had a pizza for thee years and not wanting to travel far this was the ideal location. In spite of it being really busy we were seated in five minutes, wine came instantly, menus on the table! Great service and a pizza to die for at an affordable price and a reasonably priced wine list. The three of us shared the three desert items on the menu, which to be honest we didn't really want and were slightly disappointing. But overall a great neighbourhood gastro-pub. If I tell you this is my local you will be able to stalk me - but you're more than welcome to join me for a drink - mine is a Shiraz. The décor is nice enough - an eclectic miss-mash of chairs and tables rescued from the manor houses of landed gentry and what I call pews that could be pews or just gothic bench seats - I'm not up on my furniture of the rich, famous and dead, and the lighting is just right; the wine list is sparse but fine for a local pub, and I'm pretty sure they have the right sorts of beers and spirits, but what I keep coming back for (apart from the fact that they have free wi-fi, lovely locals who bring their pets - dogs and CATS and the nice landlords let me use it as a film location.) is the food. I have never had a bad meal here. It's pub grub, but of the highest calibre on a menu that changes daily. If they're serving fish pie I have to order it, coming as it does in a bowl topped with cheese mash and veggies on the side. But their veggie lasagne, fish and chips and bangers and mash I can also confidently recommend. The Sunday lunch is way better than my Mothers makes it... and a companion who rates burgers obsessively gave the Bird a four and a half out of five and awarded them 'Best Burger in a Pub' in the 2008 Best Burger Awards. I haven't tried everything - I've been about once a fortnight for the last year - because I can't go past the fish pie if it's on and because the menu varies quite a bit, but I've yet to order a dud. Because it's all fresh they do occasionally run out of something, but I really think we should all be understanding about these things... So many pubs serve up grub that you know they've bought frozen so anywhere you can find a chip cut from a potato on premises will automatically turn my head, but these guys just go one further. Whenever I go to this place I feel like I am in heaven. The small plates are so delectable I want to eat all of them and then some. When we last went we had lamb and pine nut sausage rolls with pea panna cotta with frozen feta and lemon gel, steak tartare, scallops and burrata with heritage tomatoes. Everything was so good we wished the plates weren't so small! I then shared a pizza with a friend while our boyfriends went the whole hog and ate one each. They were sensational. Our's was smothered in gorgonzola - covered in ham - drizzled with homemade pesto. Last time I went I had the salsiccia, which was a truffle lover's perfect pizza. The light bases mean that there is no heavy, bloated, post pizza feeling and the puddings looked good too. It took a somewhat kind soul from the bar to come over and tell us that while we could order drinks, there was no food until 6 or 6:30 pm. As a foodie from LA I am having a hard time finding great food in this area as I'm staying here at the local hotel for a week. I came here the first night because of all the superb reviews from Yelp but feel I have been a bit let down. The bar and drinks were good. Atmosphere, awesome. The food was so so. Decent presentation but taste could've been better. The things I'd recommend: Salciccia Pizza, Parma Croquettes, and the Ricotta Gnocchi. Actually, just order any pizza. It was the highlight of our meal. And the pistachio ice cream was quite good too. Really good location, not a lot of beer to choose but I think this decision is because they have a good and huge selection of wines (glass and bottles). We decided for a big pizza with salsiccia and truffle and it was amazing!
