Usually, when you walk into a bakery cafė you can smell the wafting scent of pastries baking. Sadly, the smell that greeted us, and lingered the entire time we were there, was that of a cleaning agent. Our waitress was friendly and the service was pretty quick. We ordered the lunch specials ~ soup and half a sandwich. I had the potato soup and chicken salad. If you love cheese you would enjoy this particular soup, however I am not a fan of my potato soup tasting like cheese soup. I did like the fact they sliced the potatoes for the soup vs cubing them. I was disappointed in the half chicken salad sandwich. One piece of the bread was semi soft while the other was hard which led me to believe the bread bag had been left open. When I showed our waitress how hard my bread was by tapping a finger nail on the bread she didn't hesitate to take it away and bring me a new sandwich. Whomever made my half sandwich clearly had to know the bread was hard and it should never have been served! The chicken salad sandwich was nothing to remember. Our waitress said it was, "the most requested sandwich on the menu". Hmmm. There was no lettuce, no tomato, no crunch of celery, no real taste of anything special. It was simply stringy chicken with mayonnaise. So disappointing. With sandwiches served on dry hard bread we had to question the freshness of the pastries, wedding cakes etc. We decided not to chance it and opted for milkshakes at another establishment.

They bent over backward to accommodate my urgent need of the meal being on a specific date (less than 2 weeks from the date I contacted them), I wanted ribeye steak cooked fresh and served for 3 shifts (140 -ish employees) on their normal break schedule (3:00 AM, 11:00 AM, & 7:00 PM - all in one day). I had contacted multiple caterers already and none would accommodate my request for 3rd shift. Kenya kept saying "we can do that" with each and every add-on to my request. These are cooked until they are very soft, mushy and so full of seasonings and flavorful that I think a small child would like them. Hence, my review is not just about Brussels sprouts. Although Cambridge Market has had to increase their prices in the last few years, they are still competitive. One of my favorite things to get is the four veggie plate; however, I had never ordered them to go before. Today's order prompted me to take a few minutes and write a review. You get your choice of four veggies or salads along with your choice of roll or cornbread (which I opt out on). The portions, -- especially when compared to fast food restaurants such as Popeye's mashed potatoes where you get maybe 4 tablespoons of instant potatoes with 2 tablespoons of gravy on them -- are profoundly different. Cambridge Market has real mashed potatoes and yummy gravy. (I am not completely adverse to instant potatoes, but I am adverse to paying for a restaurant side dish that has a quality and portion of a frozen TV dinner.) Cambridge market knows what they are doing for sure with my four favorites: Brussels sprouts, lima beans, mashed potatoes and gravy, and their crisply-sweet broccoli salad. Another menu item -- my friend's favorite-- Is their Manhattan style roast beef on bread with mashed potatoes in the middle. I was pleased that the young lady who took my order was polite on the phone (and in person), I was pleased that I was not charged for an accompanying glass of ice water, and I was pleased that my order had the required utensils and napkins in the bag.
