The Virginia Creeper Campground is really a hidden gem, for MOST people, but not for all. Sitting at the VERY TOP of Whitetop Mountain this place is part Christmas tree farm/part campground. When first researching areas to camp to ride the Creeper Trail I settled on this one because I knew it would be nice and cool in the middle of the Summer. That, I was right about. The place is run by an older gentleman who converted part of his farm into a campground back in 2008. There is an entire section for campers and trailers with water and electric hookup right on site along with dump station. We camped with our trailer and our friends tent camped on the same site behind us in a shady, wooded area that included picnic tables. Our view was amazing and there weren't alot of other people up there. On site, the owner, Ohlaf(sp?) runs a small store where you can purchase ice, firewood and a few essentials. We found that great because running to the store when way up the mountain isn't any easy feat. The only downside of the campground is the bathhouse and bathrooms. Not very clean. We were lucky we had our trailer with both. Other than that, I would say book your site today. Everyone is friendly, the location is awesome in proximity to the trail, they even rent bikes at the campground for $15 a day.

As of June 2018, this campground has been closed for the past year and a half. We now stay at Beartree Campground, it's a nice alternative.

We drove to Damascus, about 30 minutes, and took shuttle to Abingdon for a great ride back to Damascus.

Couldn't find much info about the campground online anywhere so figured I'd post a review to help…read morethose looking! We wanted to spend time hiking in Grayson Highlands & were late to the game on Labor Day weekend & all the camping was booked. After some digging we found this place & it was about 25 mins from the park & an easy drive. If you have ATT there is no service. We lost it about 30 mins before arrival. Our GPS still worked & it was nice to unplug but just a heads up. The important highlights: -Bathrooms are clean & well maintained. -Showers are hot & we never had to wait. -Must pay in cash -Dog friendly. My dog could be offleash & run around. No major roads around & very laidback. -The sights are right by the water so you can hear the creek & the views are nice -each site has a picnic table & firepit. The campsites are pretty close which was hard when 3 carloads with about 15 people showed up & made camp at the site next door. They weren't particularly cognizant of their noise levels & we couldn't sleep until around 11 when I finally went out to ask them to please keep it down. They only stayed one night & that's just par for the course sometimes with camping. The next night was much quieter & we slept great. All in all a great campground. An hourish from Boone & Blowing Rock. Bring supplies in as there aren't any major grocery stores around. Would stay there again if we were in the area.

This park is exactly what I was looking for. I live full time in my camper van and wanted a place…read morethat I could park and not have to drive to get groceries, go to the post office, do laundry... etc. BUT I also wanted a place that was quiet and still felt like I was in nature. The park is designed so that each lot has the creek behind it. Right outside my window I have a beautiful view and a lovely sound to fall asleep to. Each spot has its own picnic table and a nice level gravel ground. It also is in walking distance to the Virginia Creeper Trail! If you don't know what that is, check it out! Another fabulous thing about this park was that my Verizon Cell service was clear enough to stream television online from abc.go.com. YAY! You will need to have your own bathroom and be fully self contained in your vehicle. The price is affordable! I don't ever use all the stuff that KOA's and resorts have... but end up paying for all of it. This is nice because it has a little more of a "camp" feeling and you don't have to sacrifice your whole months paycheck. LASTLY - Damascus is SUPER friendly! EVERYONE says hello when they walk by. Seriously, 1 out of every 50 people say, "hi, how are ya?" And check out the Blue Blaze Cafe... surprisingly good food in such a small town. Burger is dee-lish! OH and one last thing! I came for Trail Days but ended up staying a whole month. I pretty much have the whole place to myself, too! It's super relaxing and sorta nestled behind a quiet little neighborhood street. The walk into town is about 15-30 min depending on how fast or where you want to go. It's a pleasant, safe, and pretty walk. I wish there were more parks like this all over. I have a 22ft sprinter van conversion, by the way.

The owner is great and the host (Mike) is beyond amazing! We've been camping there for 8 years and love it more each time we go. The camper spots are very spacious and C1-C3 are completely shaded. C3 is the best by far! But you have to book early because C3 is very popular! Some things to know before you go! They do not have water hookups at the sites - you fill your camper tank with water at the office area. They have spots with electric hookups. They have a dump station where you can empty your tanks on your way out. This is a simple & beautiful campground. There are trails to walk/hike, mountain view to see, bathhouse with 3 bathroom/showers, and one with just a bathroom. This is by far the cleanest bathhouse I have ever seen. They show great attention to this campground and make sure all their campers are happy. You can also purchase wood at the office. There are a few t-shirts for sale at the office, as well. If you haven't checked it out, you are truly missing out! This is a great place with great people!
