We had my son's 9th birthday party with Kyoshi at Crescent Moon Karate Academy. The kids attending were between 3 and 9 years old. Kyoshi was great with the kids and kept all ages engaged. Everyone got a little taste of Karate life at the dojo. They learned about the respect, self-discipline, a few Karate moves, but also they were silly and had fun. The best part for my son was he got to cut the cake with a real samurai sword! That is definitely a moment he will remember for a long time. The space is tight and not a lot of room for a ton of parents to hang around. Drop off parties are recommended, if they are of the age to do that. My son takes Karate here. It's a bit of a drive for us, but Kyoshi is amazing with the kids and it's such a great dojo, we don't mind the drive. read more

This review is long overdue. We started 4 years ago when my son was 4. I really wanted him to learn coordination, focus, discipline, muscle/strength development, following direction, etc. We had tried jiu jitsu but it was to complex. We tried another kids' dojo, but they were too strict and serious. Again, my son was only 4 and just wanted to have fun. He had attention issues and definitely could NOT focus for an hour-long class. At the end of hour class the teacher was very discouraging about my son's lack of concentration/ability, etc. I pretty much gave up until a friend recommended Kyoshi and Crescent Moon Karate. On the first day I made a million apologies to Kyoshi for my son in advance and told him I understood if it wasn't a fit and explained that my son had issues paying attention. Kyoshi didn't seem fazed at all. He said if the curriculum was age- appropriate, the kids would do great and enjoy it. And he was right! My son loves karate, Crescent Moon dojo and most of all Kyoshi! He really has an amazing talent and love for teaching kids (especially the ones with extra struggles) and the patience of a SAINT! He's even an inspiration to me as a parent to meet my kid where he is to help him flourish. My son's coordination, focus and memory has come so far since we began. And he loves it. Renshi Torres & his team have been fantastic. You can stop by anytime, watch any class and it will become obvious to you that they really care about the children and that goes well beyond teaching self-defense. They are EXCEEDINGLY patient and knowledgeable. Our son's growth in terms of "focus, discipline & respect" has been phenomenal as he's progressed through his belts. I have been attending the MMA Fitness classes at Crescent Moon Karate every week for almost 6 months, and I love it. I always get a good workout, and every class involves different sets of exercises so it never gets boring. Renshi Robert Torres is a wonderful instructor. He is encouraging and positive; he pushes me hard but he is never harsh or overly aggressive. The MMA Fitness class is small, so I get personal attention from Renshi, and I feel like he really cares that I push myself and use correct form. The Crescent Moon facility is always clean, bright, and has good equipment. It's not a fancy top-of-the-line gym, but I am totally satisfied with the gear and the environment. And Renshi is great about using technology to keep attendance, communicate with students, and provide extra services for us outside of class. Probably the BEST place to bring your children for self defense classes! My 6 and 4 year old boys look forward coming here every other day! Master Torres and Sensei are truly wonderful and skilled teachers!! I and drop my son off for his lesson and come back knowing that he is in safe hands. They give their all each and every time which is more than anyone could ask for :) Plus they do fun extra activities like Dojo Movie night! I looove when they have this because you can leave the kids there while they play games, watch movies, and hang out with other kids in the classes! They even spend the night which gives us parents a wonderful little break haha :) I think these days all kids should go to some sort of karate or martial arts class. I wanted to have my 6 year old and 4 year old do something that incorporated respect discipline and focus plus allows them to know how to defend themselves againsts strangers etc... They teach these core values in a clean and comfortable environment. Oh and you dont have to drop your children off if you dont want too. Most parents of the smaller kids 4-6 years old usually stick around to watch , but my son just does better when im not there to distract him lol overall we have been going here for about a year and will most likely continue as long as possible! Great Dojo for children to learn fundamentals in a safe and engaging environment. My child has blossomed through her practice. My daughter has been a member of this Dojo for a few years now. She LOVES it. The blackbelts are so supportive. I have begun to take classes too and love how the instructors are with the adults as well. Occasionally my daughter sits and watches my class and has to do homework. Kyoshi Robert Torres has created a traditional karate dojo with a minimalist approach and a true family atmosphere. If you are looking for all the fluff, pomp and circumstance that you see at some of the karate chains then this is not the place for you! If your looking for a "Fight Club" or MMA type location then keep looking! However, if you are looking for a location where training in the art of karate and other martial arts/self defense techniques is taken seriously (not sure how many other dojos require you to EARN your white belt!) , where old fashioned values are taught and practiced, where everyone is welcome, where kids get their own "nights out", an annual "Dojo Picnic, movie nights are standard and parents are invited to be involved, then this is the place for you! ..right here in the heart of Mid-City no doubt! My sons confidence, self discipline and focus have improved SIGNIFICANTLY since going to Crescent Moon Karate Academy. Kyoshi just has this way of teaching kids the traditional katas ,ipons and other martial arts techniques in a way that kids want to learn. He makes it fun, engaging and challenging!
