I was creeped out by the Native American mannequin holding the gun on the second floor. There was so much to read I just couldn't keep up with everything. The floors are the original Dade County pine wood like Old... ...Davie School and everything is still originally built except for the electric and water running thru the building. The third floor had a beautiful painting display in 3 different rooms and there was a model.... ....room of what this building should've looked like during it's early motel era. I was told customers only paid around $2 to spend the night here which was alot back in those days. Before you tour the building there's a historical short film about Fort Lauderdale in the lobby downstairs which was exciting. Only downfall, you have to pay for parking outside. Another thing was, none of the staff... ...told me that there were two more houses outside to look at, everyone stayed quiet. I was charged my $3 with food stamps to see this. But I'd recommend you ask what is available to see before going on your own.

Hollywood Florida has done a great job of preserving their historic buildings. A lot of people know…read moreabout their downtown art walks but did you know you can also do a self guided historic building walk? The Hollywood Historical Society has placed plaques on several buildings of historical note in the downtown area. On the Hollywood Historical Society's website is a printable map of the Historic Landmark Plaque Tour. The group also operates tours of the historic Hammerstein House open on the last Sunday of the month during the winter and spring from 1 to 4 PM and different historic tours. Check their website for details. As a fan of architecture I love to check out the different historic buildings when I am in Hollywood and this building has quite a storied past. City of Hollywood founder Joseph Young opened this building in July 1924 as the headquarters of the Hollywood Publishing Company, which published the Reporter and the Hollywood News. He used the papers to spread the word of his new city. Less than a year later he donated the building to the city at which time it became Hollywood's first City Hall, Police Station, jail, city meeting hall and the courthouse until 1928. From the late 1970s into the 90s, it was the restaurant and music venue known as World Famous Hemmingway's. In the following years the building has been bars, restaurants, heavy metal clubs, and possibly a bondage dungeon. It was The Continental, the Monster Rock Cafe, Club X, and in 2000 a gay bar called Mankind. In 1997 the building was declared a historical site by the City of Hollywood. Today, the building houses a Peruvian restaurant called Runa's, and an adjacent bar, called the Tavern which still contain the marble floors, high ceilings, crystal chandeliers, Tiffany stained glass, and mahogany bar from the buildings hey day.

One such 1920s beauty is the 1924 Curci House built by Frank and Rosina Curci, a pioneer family who came to the area in 1907 with their three small children. The house is located in the city of Hallandale which has four heritage and one historic site. The family struggled when they arrived at SW 5th Avenue and West Dixie Highway but they put in work and became prosperous from farming tomatoes and fruit and later on they opened a construction business. The Curci's eventually had eleven children and Mr. Curci spoke five languages and was an accomplished musician. "Villa Providence" was the couples dream home which they built on their eleven acre property. It was constructed from concrete filled terra cotta block walls with termite impervious Dade pine floors. They added Cuban tile details can be found throughout the house and there is glass from Italy imbedded in the outside stucco finish. The house was so well built that it was able to withstand the Great Hurricane of 1926 when it served as a refuge for many in the community. The family remained in their home until the 1950's. The home is listed on the Hallandale website as being open on the first Saturday of every month between 11am and 4pm but they have shut it down to tours since the pandemic and never bothered to reopen although it appears that it can be rented for private events. There is a huge fence surrounding the property so for now you can only view the home from the street. It is such a disappointment to see it closed. Nearby Hollywood reopened their historic Hammerstein House and Hallandale should consider doing the same.

While Jan himself was a gifted tour guide leader, he also hired dynamic and very knowledgeable tour guides who helped tell the history of the Jewish people in each country especially during WW11. Jan chose excellent restaurants and 5 star hotels. We travelled by bus, air,overnight ferry,trains. We visited museums, historical synagogues, City Halls and palaces, had opportunities to hike , get gelato, and had downtime to see the Fjords in Norway, relax by saunas, pools. Breakfast buffets were amazing. This was one of the best tours abroad that I have ever had. The historic Hallandale School House was built in 1910. It is believed to be the oldest school…read morehouse building in Broward County. This school house was built to replace a school that was destroyed by a 1910 hurricane. The Broward County School Board was not created until 1915 so the town had to petition the Dade County School Board for the materials to build the replacement school. Volunteers went to Miami and picked up the supplies and then built the two room building. The last classes were held in the school in 1916. The school sat abandoned before being sold to the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in 1921 where it served as the church learning center. In 1966 the church expanded and donated the building to the City of Hallandale who moved it from 214 W. Hallandale Beach Blvd. to it's present location in the public works compound next to the water plant where they used it for records storage. Through the years the wooden frame became damaged by termites. In 2011 the city spent $175,000 to renovate the building. Around $78,000 of the funding came from the Broward County Historic Preservation Challenge Grant. On February 18, 2015, the school house had a grand opening. The west room of the building was staged to look like a period school house. The east room and patio can be rented for private events of up to 31 people. Unfortunately the city has stopped giving tours since Covid of this property and the historic Curci house. Part of the problem was the Hallandale Historic Society faded away after its peak of 114 members in 1977. They never had a historic building like the school to call their own. Now without them, the ability to share the history of Hallandale has slipped away. I love that something this old still exists but it is a shame that it stays locked up behind a fence instead of open and shared.

Our guide, Marc, was energetic, extremely knowledgeable, and very considerate of our individual interests, which made the experience feel personal rather than scripted. Pickup was easy and convenient at a location near the Miami airport, and the clean, comfortable van made the drive across southern Florida along the Tamiami Trail enjoyable. The airboat ride was a highlight--we got up close and personal with alligators sunning themselves despite the chilly weather, which was unforgettable. The day ended with a phenomenal boat ride with an excellent captain on the west coast through and around the mangrove islands, where we saw dolphins, white pelicans, cormorants, and an impressive variety of other waterfowl. Overall, this was a highly educational and entertaining day from start to finish. A perfect way to experience the Everglades and Florida's unique ecosystems.

The Central Arcade was built in 1923 for professional office spaces…read morespecifically for a dentist (Hlwd mayor) thru the 1930's and a photographer sixty years later. The Hollywood Blvd Theater was a tenant here in the right side space and closed forever in 2001. Today, the two storefront locations of 1936 and 1938 Hollywood Blvd are the Cabo Blanco Restaurant & Bar. The words Central Arcade in the mid 1900s meant retail shopping area not as the meaning today which an arcade refers to pinball entertainment. The bronze marker plaque on the outer wall legitimizes the landmark by the Hollywood Historical Society.
