I was coming out of dinner at a restaurant nearby when you just have the urge to get dessert somewhere else or once you've had the chance to walk off dinner a little bit. Then comes crispy cones. I have never heard of this type of dessert before. People I was with called it chimney cakes and that the concept is popular across Europe. The shop itself feels kind of like a bakery or ice cream shop. Small seating, the kind for quick stops where you dont need lots of seating as the customers cycle through decently quick. Orders also come out pretty quick, maybe a delay if you get a warm dessert. As for my order, I didn't enjoy it but I ended up struggling with it. What I had was essentially a sweet sugar bread hollowed out and filled with apple pie filling. I think that is why they call it chimney cakes. Since it's a hollow cylinder type of thing and sweet goodness goes inside and it's basically a cake. It was warm and sweet and exactly as it sounds. It's good, but kind of hard to eat. I guess you bite into the bread and slowly pick at the filling with a spoon. But over time the cake goes below the cup it is in. It would be. Nice if there was a way to push it up out of the cup it's in, without touching with your hands. There is a spoon, but its not exactly strong enough to cut the. Bread into smaller bite sized pieces. Eventually you just have to get your hands messy by pulling it out and enjoying it like a pastry. My daughter and I visited this spot in Edison, NJ and tried the 2 Cone Package, which came with two cones, two spreads, and a pint of ice cream. The cones reminded me of a warm cinnamon pretzel from Auntie Anne's, baked fresh right in front of us. The ice cream itself is very high quality soft serve. They line the inner cone with a spread, so I went full themed with Biscoff cookie butter spread and Biscoff cookie toppings. Server was kind and suggested I could sample their soft serve So my daughter requested for the Cocoa Berry crispy cone, which she enjoyed. However when I tested out the coffee and donut soft serve was actually not as impressed. I've been seeing ads for Crispy Cones for what feels like months now announcing that they were opening in Edison. I stumbled across the storefront by complete accident and decided it was fate and I just had to try. I had no idea what Crispy Cones served prior to going, and didn't really know what the cone was other than it was freshly baked. Upon entering I was shocked at how clean and open it was. Minimalistic in color and design, the store was packed on a Saturday night with patrons waiting for their orders. I loved being able to see how exactly these cones were made, step by step -- it gave me a better idea of what they actually were and provided entertainment while I waited for my order. The cone itself resembles a donut with cinnamon sugar - tasty, but dense. The flavors were great and it's a really fun concept with a spread inside the dough cone and toppings both on the bottom and the top of the ice cream. Now for the cons: The cones are freshly baked, so they are piping hot when the staff places ice cream into them. With there being limited seating there's no great opportunity to immediately eat this cone, and by the time you step outside your ice cream is topping over and melting all over you. The cones are tedious to make, and I saw the staff visibly struggling with making them and constantly tossing rejects out. My cone that I received honestly should have been a reject as I saw the staff member trying to put it back together as it was falling apart and toppling over, but was still served it. The entire dessert is tedious and I truly feel bad for the staff. It's almost as if it's a work of art, unlike other ice cream shops where toppings are quickly thrown on top and served. Each cone needed individual toppings pressed, one by one, into the ice cream in order for them to stay. This also means it takes a considerably long time to put each order together, leading to long waits for just an ice cream cone. $11 for a vanilla soft serve with 4 pieces of strawberry that kept falling out of the ice cream and a Nutella drizzle? Tasty, but just didn't feel worth it to me. If you are looking to try something different though with this donut cone, this is definitely the right place for you. read more

This place showed up as a sponsored ad on my Instagram, and I think it was letting me know that a location was opening close to me, but when I saw the ad I knew I couldn't wait, lol. I had a dentist appointment not too far from Edison, so I made plans to visit that location. I got there super early, and wasn't sure what to expect, but I looked at the menu and wasn't really interested in the "put together options". I basically built my own crispy cone and I tried to keep it simple. The store personnel was super patient while I was trying to figure it out because in the most indecisive person EVER! A new dessert spot to try out in Edison! Wanted to see what all the hype was about these ice-cream filled chimney cakes. Since it was our first time, we wanted to try their signature flavors, so did the brownie royale and cookie a la mode. Cookie a la mode was a solid 8/10 rating, not too sweet and still diverse in flavor and texture, loving the cookie dough bites and caramel drizzle. The brownie royale was a little bit worse off, the brownie chunks tasted a bit stale and flavorless, and the chocolate ice cream quite bland in comparison to their vanilla. With the chocolate drizzle, it tasted more like a single note of chocolate then anything, and was too chalky and sweet to finish, leaving a rating of 3/10. The chimney cake was unfortunately the worst part of both cones. I was so excited to try and like it, but it was super bland, not a cinnamon-rich dessert like I hoped for. It ended up turning into a giant dough ball if you didn't finish fast, which was what happened to our desserts. Service was speedy and courteous, but with only 4 tables there, if you plan to est there make sure you have a friend snag a free table while you order. Ample parking in the shopping mall complex, so that is never a worry here. Overall, I would recommend trying the place out once, but after this one-time visit for me, I know this is not my type of dessert. read more

My partner and I saw this place in our feed and decided to give it a try and it's safe to say that we will be coming back! The service was amazing the lady serving us was super sweet and seemed so dedicated while making the ice cream. Not to mention, the place was extremely clean. We came in around 7:00 PM on a Friday, and it was spotless even that late into the day. The ice cream was top-tier and the crispy cone was absolutely immaculate. Went to try this place out as I saw a few ads for in the last few months. It looked really good in the videos I saw on tic tok but when I went today with my family I was not really impressed. Ordering was pretty easy you just walk up to the touch screen and order but as you walk over to the pick up area you can see how dirty the place really is. The ice cream machine looked like it was not cleaned for a while. As well as the service was terrible. We waited over 30 minutes for our order to be done due to them just simply skipping past our order. While scrolling on Instagram, I saw someone had posted about crispy cones and decided to stop by for a tasty treat when we happened to be in the area. The store is a decent size. There are a few two person and four person tables in the front and the back is the ordering area/ open kitchen where you can see the crispy cones being made and you can see your order being put together. The workers were extremely friendly and ready to help if you had any questions. The only minus was that the floor of the store was extremely sticky. There are two ways of ordering. You can either order one of their signature creations or you can choose to customize your own. Their signature creations were - cocoa berry - cookies a la mode - berry cheesecake - brownie royale And they had one weekly specialty creation - pumpkin de Lyon If you wanted to customize your own cone, there really isn't much variation due to what you could choose from. For the cone you can either choose from traditional or their specialty flavor of the week (biscoff spice when I was there) For the spread you can choose from Nutella, peanut butter, cookie butter, and strawberry jam. For the ice cream your choices are vanilla, chocolate, vanilla/chocolate swirl or their specialty flavor of the week (pumpkin spice or vanilla/pumpkin spice swirl) For the sauce you can choose from Nutella, raspberry, caramel, or cookie butter. It seems like there are a lot of choices, but everything ends up tasting kinda similar in the end. We ended up ordering two of their signature creations, the cocoa berry and the cookies a la mode. The soft serve was ok, nothing especially special or different from other soft serves. The cones were the special part. They are freshly baked and are still slightly warm when you get your order. They are a spiral shaped pastry, cooked so it is crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. It is then coated in cinnamon sugar and lined with a sauce on the inside. The cones were also pretty big. We split two cones between three people and were all pretty satisfied. However this is not somewhere that I would come back to frequently. The cone is good and different and I was glad to have tried it once, but the ice cream is essentially just normal soft serve with some toppings. And at almost $11 an ice cream, it just really isn't worth it. read more

The signature crispy cone was not what I was expecting. The soft serve ice cream was so little, the cone was twice the size of ice cream and there was only 4 little pieces of topping on my cone. The price is ridiculous for what you get. The place itself is dirty. The service is awful. The outside of the storefront is so dirty that it makes you gag to even look at it. Get some Captain Crunch stick it on some soft ice cream and it is exactly the same as the garbage they sell.
