Top marks for this fish and chip shop in the middle of downtown St. Andrews, Fife, Scotland. The portions are generous and every meal is cooked while you wait. This may result in a wait as the line gets shorter in front of you, since we saw the line out on the pavement and still got in it. Cod and chips for us, and my standard for excellence remains Magpies in Whitby...but this chippie runs a close second. Hot, filling, and batter so light you might be eating nothing but fish. I'd go back in a heartbeat!

We found the place while visiting St. Andrews and it seemed like a good place to stop for lunch as it was full of people and the smell coming from the restaurant was very appealing, so we decided to join the queue and wait for a couple of minutes to have lunch. We obviously had the famous fish & chips and it didn't disappoint us! The fish was fresh and the coating was crispy and light! The homemade tartar sauce was delicious and made a great complement to the chips as well! They had a nice selection of beers and wines and we decided to try the local ones, which came in bottles with lovely stickers. The desserts were also yummy! The service was great. Both ladies working were very nice and attentive. Overall a very good experience and if I'm back to St. Andrews, I'll definitely return to this place!

We hit this spot during our visit to St.Andrews, according to a very good source this place was the best for Fish & Chips. So I agree...I had the small portion of the cod with chips, and it looked like a large because the portions were so big. The batter on the fish wasn't overwhelming, very well fried and the cod being amazing. Fries...chips...whatever they were good, nothing to write about I guess. The restaurant was rather small, but they placed the tables in a way they can get as many customers in for the space allowed. Their beer and wine selection was OK, I would liked more Scotland selections. Prices for the food were fair and service was good. Will definitely return when were back in St.Andrews.

They stay busy because the food is so good!

It's more than just Fish & Chips, but this was the best we had in 3 weeks of Scotland travel.

There is a nice variety of seafood on offer on the menu but the better choice is to select your fish from tonight's specials on the wall. That's what we did and we were very satisfied. The wine menu is limited. We chose a Pouilly Fuse that was unfortunately not drinkable. The staff were kind enough to take it back. I then chose the IPA that was much better. The appetizer recommended by our server was the mussels. These were best mussels I've ever enjoyed. It was served with a sauce made with garlic, butter, milk, and onion. It's good enough to be a soup! Our sides included brocholini and halumi. Both were excellent. The brocholini was flavorful and crunchy with a nice sauce-though know that the sauce has ham in it. The cheese, lightly fried is served with a spicy sauce that I really enjoyed, bit was too much for my wife. It was superb. We selected the monkfish and sea bass for our mains. Both were excellent, moist and flavorful fish-generous portions of each. This was an extremely satisfying and enjoyable meal. It was I've of our best in Scotland. We were frankly unable to eat more and we didn't have dessert.

So I went back the next day by myself, I did rsvp for 1 for 3pm, which was't necessary. After looking at the menu, went with: - Haddock & Chips with mushy peas. One thing I do like about this place was that, they offer different fish options, but no cod, thus I went with haddock. They do better job with frying their fish. The fish and the batter did not fall apart. The mushy peas was not my cup of joe :) When you walk in, to your right is the kitchen, where you can order for take out, walk towards the left to go to the dining room. The service was mediocre, thus only three stars. The wait staff rarely stopped by to check on you or refill your water, you had to hunt them down to get more water.

There were a few other parties present so the room was loud but had interesting decorations with mail carrier bags and newspaper articles (someone clearly spent a lot of time on decorations, especially with the flowers at the front). Our waiter was attentive throughout the meal and I ordered the following: -fish and chips (4/5): beautifully cooked w crispy batter and glistening fish but they forgot that final coating of salt that ties the whole meal together. I added salt and it definitely elevated the dish but this is a pretty significant oversight so I'm rating the dish based on what was presented to me. The chips were thick, crispy and well seasoned and the tartare sauce was tasty and peas interesting and good. Overall, solid fish and chips but I'm hopeful I can find better in the UK. -highland sling (4.25/5) : a refreshing and fruity raspberry drink but nothing memorable restaurant. -sticky toffee pudding (3/5): as soon as the dish came out, I knew it was dry. 'Sticky' is literally in the description and this pudding was not that. The flavor was decent but this was a disappointing end to the meal. Overall, Forgan's has a Beautiful walkway entrance with flowers and plants, great service and serves decent food.
