It's more than just Fish & Chips, but this was the best we had in 3 weeks of Scotland travel.

Searched the must eat in St. Andrew and Cromars was on many list that came up... so this was our first place to try fish and chips. The place has very limited seating inside, they have a large picnic table and few tables out by the street, but the place does get busy. Most of the folks coming here were getting their orders to go. WARNING, they only have one register, you order first and if you are dining in, they will bring you the food. What the cashier won't ask you, is if you need tartar sauce, etc, it's assumed you know how to order. On top of that, the young lady working the registered looked beyond flustered and overwhelmed working. We waited about 5 minutes before we ordered (everything is a la carte, so if you forget to order something, you need to get back in line and order them). We got the following: - Battered Haddock with chips special (comes with a drink) x 2 - Calamari - Onion Rings - Chicken tender salad We got our food, then realized we had to order the tartar sauce, etc. So go back in line, by this time I had to wait 10 minutes to get: - Tartar sauce x 3 - Ketchup (yes they charge you for ketchup) - side order of curry The haddock - first time experiencing fish & chips in Scotland, I walked away from here very disappointed. The fish is NOT seasoned, very bland and the batter fell off the fish. It seemed like there was no binding agent between the fish and the wet batter. The onion ring was too greasy and calamari was decent. The saving grace was the gravy, definitely get the gravy to dip your chips in. Why two stars? - staffing - the cashier could have asked if this was our first time or not... and if it was, then explain that everything is a la carte. Don't assume that folks coming here knows how to order and force them to get back in line to get the condiments. tables - tables with eaten plates everywhere. It seems they foregone the cleaning the tables to take orders and get the lines moving. I think we would walked away with a lot better experience if things were explained to us. Was it worth spending 90 pounds with tip? No. read more

We tend to go to Tail End when in town which is not often but decided to try Cromars-great choose with good quality fish. It's made to order, So no sitting under heated lamps for awhile. Chips, mushy peas all come very hot in a good way. With a beer to compliment the meal, will be jncluddd in future ST. Andrew's visits. Service was attentive, and responsive! read more

I only wish the in-dining seating experience was better. People are tightly crammed in. I guess this place is best for take out. But they're cheeky. They charge for tartare sauce. Anyhow it's a fun take out. Just as you'd like your fried fish and chips. And the mushy peas are great. It's a really good menu. With lots to choose from. And the staff are lovely. read more

We got there just before the lunch crowd and were able to get a table inside. There was already a long queue for takeaway. I had the haddock fish and chips and husband ordered a fish sandwich. Everything was served quickly and tasted just ok. The batter in the fish was a bit soggy. The fries were crispy and a little greasy. We asked for tartar sauce and the server brought a large bowl over and scooped it out onto our plates. Looked ok, tasted great. It really helped make the fish palatable. It was a nice lunch but nothing remarkable. It was a bit pricey as well. I would skip this place and try other restaurants in St Andrews if I'm ever there again. read more

Top marks for this fish and chip shop in the middle of downtown St. Andrews, Fife, Scotland. The portions are generous and every meal is cooked while you wait. This may result in a wait as the line gets shorter in front of you, since we saw the line out on the pavement and still got in it. Cod and chips for us, and my standard for excellence remains Magpies in Whitby...but this chippie runs a close second. Hot, filling, and batter so light you might be eating nothing but fish. Let's start with the $40 for two take out plates. Smells fishy. Like a tourist trap. The staff is mainly high school kids likely paid the bare minimum. The chrome and large tv screens create an ambiance of a fish and chips McDonald's. Food was not spectacular. read more

We got there on a Sunday right when they opened. Got to sit outside in the sun. Fish came out and we were shocked at the size of the portions. Big! So light and crispy was the batter. Adding the malt vinegar and salt. Fries were amazing. Don't forget to get your tartar sauce. read more

We found the place while visiting St. Andrews and it seemed like a good place to stop for lunch as it was full of people and the smell coming from the restaurant was very appealing, so we decided to join the queue and wait for a couple of minutes to have lunch. We obviously had the famous fish & chips and it didn't disappoint us! The fish was fresh and the coating was crispy and light! The homemade tartar sauce was delicious and made a great complement to the chips as well! They had a nice selection of beers and wines and we decided to try the local ones, which came in bottles with lovely stickers. The desserts were also yummy! The service was great. Both ladies working were very nice and attentive. Overall a very good experience and if I'm back to St. Andrews, I'll definitely return to this place! read more

Fantastic fish & chips! We split the regular sized (whole filet) cod and haddock between the two of us, it was plentiful and delicious. The servers were attentive and even nicely made us an iced tea even though it wasn't on the menu. They have lots of wine & beer options, a range of other seafood options as well as dessert. There are inside and outside seating options as well as an extended patio cover for when it rains. read more

We hit this spot during our visit to St.Andrews, according to a very good source this place was the best for Fish & Chips. So I agree...I had the small portion of the cod with chips, and it looked like a large because the portions were so big. The batter on the fish wasn't overwhelming, very well fried and the cod being amazing. Fries...chips...whatever they were good, nothing to write about I guess. The restaurant was rather small, but they placed the tables in a way they can get as many customers in for the space allowed. Their beer and wine selection was OK, I would liked more Scotland selections. Prices for the food were fair and service was good. Will definitely return when were back in St.Andrews. read more

We found this place on a whim while visiting St. Andrews and boy am I glad we did! This place was one of our favorites in Scotland and I can guarantee we will be back one day! We were strolling around the town looking for a place to eat and this little spot caught our eye. We decided to stop in and try to grab lunch. It was packed! We ended up ordering takeaway and ate outside at the tables they provide. Just as a heads up, this place is definitely loud and family friendly so be ready for the masses. However, you can also grab it to go (they package it in fabulous little boxes with all the sauces you need). I found it much more fun to eat from the box anyways :) Please order the fish n chips. I planned to get the small but the hubs ordered the large just in case. The large was huge - enough for two people definitely! The fish was so tender and the batter was some of the best I've had. Additionally the chips were a perfect compliment. Everything was done to perfection. The other huge compliment is that my hubs doesn't really like fish & he loved their fish n chips - said it didn't taste very fishy. Thanks for a wonderful fish n chips experience! The moment we walked in, there was a very appealing aroma in the air. Our server was the only one working, but she was so friendly and had such a great sense of humor, even though she was really busy. Our fish was served up quickly - hot and fresh! The Haddock was amazing! Just add a squirt of lemon and it's perfect! The chips were crispy and the house made tartar sauce was unbelievably good - the best I've had in Europe. They have a good selection of beer and wine and a comfortable little diner. Overall, this was my very favorite fish and chips experience EVER! read more

I was expecting much more about this place given the great reputation. However, I found the fish overfried and too oily. The chips were fine. Provided that fish and chips in the specialty house dish and that prices are not cheap (although it is not a expensive place either), I cannot give more than two points to this restaurant. I am sure it was just a fluke, because many people like this place a lot. I am sorry to reflect my disappointment, but I think is fair to show my experience. read more

Sooo good. Easy access. Good service. Fair prices. Better food! We ordered Battered Fish; Chips; Burgers (for the kids); Onion Rings; Coleslaw. Everyone was happy and full. Personally, we feel the battered fish (cod or haddock) was the best we have had on our trip. read more

This place has a friendly staff and a great atmosphere (although it's definitely has a more "modern" feeling than some traditional fish and chip places). The fish was very good and fresh and I definitely enjoyed my meal. My only complaint is that I felt the prices were a little high in comparison to the food you receive. If you're looking for a cool place to sit down and enjoy a meal and maybe a beer, then I'd probably recommend Cromars; however, if you're looking for take-away, there are some cheaper options around town. read more

Great fish and chips, but NOT cheap. I live across the street, so I it's the go-to place if we dont feel like cooking. They often have specials, and so I often have the grilled salmon or john dory or whatever (with the chips, of course) - those are great too. read more
