So I went back the next day by myself, I did rsvp for 1 for 3pm, which was't necessary. After looking at the menu, went with: - Haddock & Chips with mushy peas. One thing I do like about this place was that, they offer different fish options, but no cod, thus I went with haddock. They do better job with frying their fish. The fish and the batter did not fall apart. The mushy peas was not my cup of joe :) When you walk in, to your right is the kitchen, where you can order for take out, walk towards the left to go to the dining room. Walking into Tailend, the energy of patrons enjoying their meal is infectious. The decor is modern but comfortable. There is a nice variety of seafood on offer on the menu but the better choice is to select your fish from tonight's specials on the wall. That's what we did and we were very satisfied. The wine menu is limited. We chose a Pouilly Fuse that was unfortunately not drinkable. The staff were kind enough to take it back. I then chose the IPA that was much better. The appetizer recommended by our server was the mussels. These were best mussels I've ever enjoyed. It was served with a sauce made with garlic, butter, milk, and onion. It's good enough to be a soup! Our sides included brocholini and halumi. Both were excellent. The brocholini was flavorful and crunchy with a nice sauce-though know that the sauce has ham in it. The cheese, lightly fried is served with a spicy sauce that I really enjoyed, bit was too much for my wife. It was superb. We selected the monkfish and sea bass for our mains. Both were excellent, moist and flavorful fish-generous portions of each. This was an extremely satisfying and enjoyable meal. It was I've of our best in Scotland. Really great fresh seafood options! Definitely a must if you are a seafood lover. We also really enjoyed the nice wine selection. I love that it's not only a restaurant but also a seafood market so if you are just looking to takeout or bake fish at home it's a great option. The inside of the restaurant was nice nothing too fancy but modern and clean. Service was very attentive and nice. We did not feel rushed even though when I booked they had a note saying a time limit. This seemed common at most restaurants we booked in Scotland though so maybe it's more of common place. Ate lunch here while visiting our daughter's campus and had a good meal. I had the sea bass and enjoyed that. I normally like sea bass that is baked, but the one here was grilled. My past experiences with grilled sea bass was that it was dried out, but that was not the case here. It was prepared really well. My daughter had the mussels and was happy with that. My wife had the Tabbouleh Salad with Halloumi and she loved that. Also ordered the Crispy Potatoes with Dill Mayo side and that was very good. Good service and nice environment. For first-timers; the restaurant is located behind the fish-and chip counter (go to the left and then back down the hall. Great spot for some hearty fish & chips after playing golf. We were absolutely starving when we walked in and were seated right away, even without a reservation. The space is fairly large and although I would not call the space comfortable, it was very clean and cute. The menu had a variety of seafood dishes and I really enjoyed my fish tacos. However, the onion rings were pretty greasy and bland. We were on a tight schedule as we needed to catch the train back to Edenborough. OMG!! I can see why this place was voted the best fish and chips in Scotland. They give you the option of having it battered , breaded or grilled. That is unheard of and it is the absolutely best California option. I wish I could package you up right now and bring you back home. We ordered the breaded and it was out of this world. This is a contender for the best food I had in St Andrews! The mussels were excellent, and the sauce was great to soak up with the sourdough bread. The fish and chips was the best I've ever had. The batter was unbelievably light, airy, crispy, and great flavor. The tiger prawns were also incredibly good. And finally, the homemade cheesecake was more like a strawberries and cream but it was excellent, and I don't know if the brownie was homemade but it was very moist with a thick crisp crust and gave it amazing flavor and texture. When you push your way to the back, there are some tables and a small outdoor space. Comfortable and cozy, but not white table cloth! Our server, Mark, was quite a guy. He was a lot of fun and enhanced our whole experience. So, we got what we came for. A very large piece of fresh haddock with a very light batter. The fish was tender and tasted great. Not very greasy at all. We also tried the onion rings and they may have been the best we've ever had. Same light crispy batter as the fish and they were so delectable. To top it off we had the Toffee Sticky Pudding. Holy crap, was that amazing! It was. The perfect finish to a perfect meal. Best fish and chips in Scotland? I don't know. When in Scotland, you should try the seafood (so I've heard). Based on that we found the Tailend. This place even sells fresh seafood in the front area that you walk by to the restaurant area. We went here based on the seafood (and reading a zillion fish & chips cheers). We ordered the scallops and haggis starter (while the scallops were really good, don't order unless you like haggis as well or you're missing half the app). I had the seafood curry with udon noodles. Wow. The noodles (I didn't ask) seemed freshly made, it was a generous portion with a wonderful variety and amount of seafood. My wife had the smoked haddock and my daughter had a salad with smoked salmon. Each of those was beautifully done as well (with very large servings). In fact, you can easily skip apps and will still be hard-pressed to finish your dishes. The only downside is the decor is a bit spartan. After taking the scenic route up to St. Andrews, I was pretty pooped after a long day of driving. My parents, the boyfriend and I were pretty hungry by the time we made it to St. Andrews center and my dad, being the researcher that he is, had a few restaurants in mind that he wanted to try. Tailend Restaurant was one of them, and happened to be in the area we were, so we decided to give it a try. To get back to the restaurant area, you have to walk through their market, which was lovely. Fresh seafood laid out to purchase, along with loads of stuff in a cooler just off to the left. Just beyond the market is their lovely restaurant, and since we were graced with a bit of sun, we opted to sit in their sun room, which was really nice. The waitress came over and immediately asked 'what would you like to eat', which was a little off putting as we had literally just sat down, but we ordered drinks and she came back a few minutes later to take our food order. The boyfriend, my dad and I all ordered Scottish made drinks and my mom just had water. When it came time to order food, my mom, the boyfriend and I all ordered the breaded fish and chips for a change from you're typical battered fish and chips. I was amazed at how great this fish was. It came with a basket of fries and some mushy peas. Outstanding! My dad ordered some prawns and a salad, thinking that was going to be enough to satisfy his appetite. He then went on to order an order of the breaded fish as well, since it was so tasty. Service was a little on the slow side, and we waited quite some time to get our bill as the girls who were working were busy chatting with each other up at the bar area. We finally ended up walking up to the bar to pay. All in all, the food was great, which made up for the slow service. This is my go to place whenever my family and I visit St.Andrews. Fresh seafood, friendly and efficient services, really good price (especially for the quantity and quality you get). It is on the campus of University of St.Andrews, so it is a college town, but there is the famous St.Andrews golf course so you do get older folks also. It is on the Main Street so parking maybe difficult, but it's a small town so even if you park a little ways away it is never a long walk. The front of the restaurant is a take away counter where you can choose from various fillet of fish. The back of the restaurant is the eat in area. Small space in the back is for outdoor seating if you feel like "eating" outside. It is seriously not a large area, about 6-7 tables. Although it is technically outdoors it is glassed in and has a nice cloth tarp as a ceiling to protect the diners from strong sun. We ate indoors since I don't like dealing with bugs and I like to see the hustle and bustle of the restaurant Highly recommend this place if you are anywhere near St. Andrews! read more
