But the good kind of sore? I took Emily's 7:30 am boot camp class and while the playlist was straight fire, my thighs were also on fire. We were a small group, so we were able to all get personal attention on form. Emily had laid out what we were going to do and made use of the timers, so I didn't have to count down the seconds myself. We used lots of different equipment (kettlebells, weights, jump ropes, ergs) and it made the 45 minutes go by a lot faster than I usually find at these types of classes. The space is huge, literally an open box, with lots of equipment. It seems some people just stop by and use the equipment, and they also have classes. 10 packs come out to $14 a class and 20 packs $12. They also have a 21 days for $49 pack for new members (which is a great deal) and other student and military discounts. 3x a week is $90 and (this is how they get you at the Movie theater with popcorn sizes) for only an extra $15 you can get unlimited (with 6 month commitment). For a bit extra you can get all access passes. But before you box Open Box into the Crossfit box, check out the upstairs yoga studio! Unlike many gyms where the yoga class is in the same room and its very difficult to feel zen, the yoga studio here is set off, sound proofed, painted a calming color, and has great manduka mats and blocks. I did a private workshop with Emily here and my friends and I had such a good time, she's great at teaching inversions and super encouraging! Open up your mind (and wallet) to Open Box, and you may just open up your heart to them, along with, probably, your hips.

The good: Very big and nice facilities with amazing great variety of equipment. A TON of group fitness classes if you're into that including free reformer Pilates classes (if you can get in.) Issues (that are unacceptable in general or just completely insane to have at the membership price point...these are things you deal with a budget gym or someplace you go for free): Constant elevator issues which cause lines and long wait times during peak hours. And for the last 6+ months they've only had two of three functioning if that. You know it's an issue, fix it for goodness sakes. Good luck if you rely on parking here. The entrance are closed half the time causing you to have to detour for a good ten plus minutes to get in and then exiting you're stuck behind trucks delivering in the alley they've left "open" for you to get out. And yes the validate but they randomly increased the price from $11 to $12 one day. Not a huge deal but why not tell members in advance? It's just sloppy. The sound systems are suboptimal for group classes especially in the HIIT studio. It is a vibe killer for sure. The spa that we were promising was coming soon when we joined in November of 2023 is still nowhere to be found. The locker rooms are adequately maintained but there are so many privacy issues. Often there are signs that there will be men working in the women's locker room. And the phone use is NUTS. People are on video conference calls! How is this allowed?? The cafe hours stink for early birds. If I'm done with my workout before 7am and I want coffee, I'm SOL. It's also insanely expensive. I cannot speak for the food there because I won't eat it after I saw a mouse in the cafe area while I was working from there one day. Treadmills are constantly broken. They added a bunch and now there's somehow less available because they cannot seem to maintain them. Out of service for a day or two is one thing but it goes way longer than that. Good luck and Godspeed accessing an assault bike or a ski erg between 10:15 and 2pm on weekdays. They're fully monopolized by the turf class and the HIIT studio is used for classes including mat Pilates (??) Generally speaking maintenance seems to be an issue. A pedal was hanging off one of the two assault bikes on the main floor this week when I was using it. A tread was sticking a few weeks ago when I started to run on it. I couldn't strap my foot into a rower the other day. It doesn't seem like it would be too much to ask that they keep their eye on this. I do feel like it used to be under control but had fallen off a cliff recently. Too many people here are shooting footage for social media. I cannot complete a workout without being concerned I'm in the background of someone's selfie-video or photo shoot. Hotel guests have full access to the gym. It adds to the insane crowds on the weekend and needs to get in check. Many of the trainers and instructors are great but a handful of trainers that either do personal training or turf classes are flat out RUDE. I was treated disrespectfully and even bullied by one of them while minding my own business just trying to complete my workout. This is embarrassing for the gym and needs to be addressed. Ultimately, I could no longer justify being a paying member with so little care shown by management about the member experience. Perhaps spending less time posting less on social media and more time listening to an addressing member feedback would be helpful.

The elevators are not great and often only 2/3 work. I think more transparency would be nice. 2) Showers start to flood within 30-seconds. It's gross and I, again, wish there was some transparency on why this isn't addressed. 3) The lack of outlets. This one is most frustrating as it seems to have the most straightforward solution. No outlets under the table in the library? Come on guys. Get a power strip or something please. Outlets by more seats on the 3rd floor mezzanine and terrace would be game changing! Please

Wrote the following in October of last year and putting it on Yelp now. Everything I said still…read morestands. I'm leaving the city for a while and it makes me sad to leave them. TL;DR: NOT ALL CXF GYMS ARE MADE THE SAME. GET YOUR TUSH TO THIS GYM. YOU WON'T REGRET IT. Context: I waited about a month to write this review. I played rugby in college and had mild exposure to CXF. Two years later, in medical school, I find myself yearning to be physically fit and strong again. Sitting all day does not bode well for your body. I'm not a fitness junkie, but definitely try my best to fight sloth and lethargy. So, I was thrilled when this gem of a gym opened up just down the street from me. Here are the reasons why they simply are the best: I. THE COACHES. Seriously. They are fantastic, friendly, and phenomenal. Their personal records, dedication to the sport and fitness, and love for people really are a testament to how a gym can quickly start to feel like family. You'll know when they start making fun of you without hesitation. Just dish it right back. In addition, they are patient and are humble about being knowledgeable. They use terms you understand. They are attentive to you during your workout. They remember details about your life. They modify workouts for you, even if you're in a big class. They care. Basically, I love them. Did I also mention they have lives outside of CXF? Raising kids, dental school, chasing business goals, expanding gyms, just to name a few. No excuses. Make fitness a priority in your life; they'll help you achieve your goals and then some. II. THE PEOPLE. If you're new to the city, this is one of the best ways to make new friends. If you want to be around people who won't talk about things related to your 8-5 schedule, this is the place to be. And, the sense of camaraderie is tangible here. Your gym-mates are always cheering you on. Yeah there's that awkward first hello, but once you start going regularly, you start feeling thankful that you know these people. We laugh, we sweat, we grunt, we smile, we (feel like) throwing up, we ache, we roll, we dance... you get the idea. We do the WOD's. These humans are freakin' awesome. So, say hello. III. THE PATRIOTISM. You'll see the flags of our military branches hanging proudly in this gym. Google Travis Manion. Better yet, I've done it for you: http://www.travismanion.org. Come to Friday workouts because the WOD honors a soldier who has given everything for our freedom. Because you should subscribe to the notion that the best way to honor the fallen is by challenging the living. And, let Travis' infamous partying words infuse your life: "If not me, then who?" Take ownership of what you do, care for others, in small ways and in big ways. IV. THE SIMPLICITY. You don't have to be a nut about fitness, calorie counting, the in's and out's of CXF, etc in order to enjoy this gym and all it has to offer. Partake of what suits your fancy. Obviously, challenge yourself. Being in medical school has taught me that there are certain seasons where certain things take priority, but that doesn't mean that I can't still do things I enjoy, even if in small doses. So, do what you can and give it your all while doing so. And, don't compare. Comparison is the thief of joy. Joy + exercise rush = happy camper. V. THE PRICING. No but really, they are serious about helping out their students. If you actually make your three workouts a week, it's about 13 dollars a workout. That's probably what you spend on two Starbucks runs/study sessions. So, cut out the two trips and replace it with a workout. Choose a cheaper drink. I've definitely camped out at coffee shops for 8 hour study sessions after buying one iced coffee. Sorry I'm not sorry. Just make it work. Your body will thank you, and you'll be better energized to study/work. Win-win. If you're not a student strapped with loans, I don't want to hear your financial woes. VI. THE 6 AM. This workout slot holds a special place in my heart. I haven't heard of another CXF gym that opens that early. If I start clinic at 8AM, I can get to my workout, shower/breakfast, and bike to clinic right in the nick of time. If the gym opened half an hour later, I wouldn't be able to workout at all in the morning. I usually leave my phone at home. It's a time and space where no one can reach you. When you're done, you feel like you can take on the day - no sweat. So, I'm thankful. Like I said at the top of this post, not all CXF gyms are the same. So, choose well. And lastly, you probably have misconceptions about CXF; just talk to one of the coaches and clear it up. It's not just for gym rats, competitive athletes, etc. It's also for normal people with normal fitness goals. All in all, I think I've made it clear that this gym and its staff rock my world and have been a wonderful addition to my life. See you there!

I even competed in the Crossfit open this year, which was rather intimidating at first, but the coaches were very helpful, positive and encouraging, which made the experience fun and competitive. For anyone who is considering crossfit, UCity is a great place to begin. The coaches always take classes through a thorough warm-up and demonstrate proper form on all lifts. If it's your first time doing a particular lift or exercise, modifications are always made. There are many opportunities that help build community for members, such as: Paleo Challenges, WOD and wine nights, swim WODs in the summer, etc. Members are super friendly and encouraging and I look forward to seeing familiar faces each time I attend a class. After 10 months of working out consistently at UCity, I am certainly in the best shape of my life. Join this box, get some gainz, and have some fun!

If you don't - good luck with that! After everyone gets home from work the gym is a mad house. Around 6 there are so many people you can hardly get a workout in sometimes, forget about doing the exercises you came there to do. The combination of the large variety of machines but few of each, huge amount of people, and limited space make it sometimes impossible to get on all of the machines and equipment you came for. For example, there are three stair masters. Now there are two because one has been broken for over a month (full disclosure: they did put up a sign saying they are working on it). Those are some popular machines! You literally have to wait behind them and hope the person on them gets off so you can get on it during peak hours. It can be pretty frustrating when your leg day has to turn into back day because hulk hogan won't get off the squat rack. That said, the people who lift there are all pretty experienced. I see a lot of athletes from different universities and body builders, both men and women. One time someone came over and helped me with my squat form. That was really nice of him. Unfortunately, that kind of setting can be intimidating for some people (like my gf). I think that's silly though. I did the trial of small group fitness classes. It kicked my butt! Great workout for sure. But the trainer sees me around the gym all the time and never says hello. I'm not feeling the love. The rest of the staff often yells to each other really loudly. Some trainer was yelling for no reason, just talking LOUDLY, with her clients during my workout today. It was really distracting and annoying. I don't need to hear your conversation from the other side of the gym. I think it's unprofessional. To be honest I'd leave the gym but they have me stuck in a year contract. I need a gym that I can rely on for a good workout, working machines, and good service!
