I started training with Rebecca and couldn't be more thankful. She can spot my BS from a mile away and always pushes me harder than I'd push myself. Then, transitioning through college I struggled to find what "worked". I started down this path of doing the fad workouts until I became sick of them and I no longer enjoyed it (which came way too quickly). Fast forward about 10 years, and that old way of thinking and approaching exercise is totally gone. I started with Black Flag in Jan 2020 and I'm thrilled to say I'm still going strong over a year later (pandemic and all). Through bootcamp classes and personal training with Mike, not only do I enjoy going to the gym but the workouts make it so that I never feel like I'm getting "bored" or that I wish I was doing something else... not to mention I'm the strongest, both physically and mentally, that I've ever been. Between the incredible trainers and the variety of workouts they offer, I'm happy to say I've found my forever gym.

This place was everything I needed exactly when I needed it. I came here looking for programmed workouts and a change to my routine. I ended up getting highly skilled coaching, programming and a community of people that make me feel welcome. Whether you're a first time crossfitter, a seasoned veteran, a drop-in just passing through or a 60 year old who has never worked out before and feel it's time... you've got a place here. This place really embodies the statement: "CrossFit isn't for everyone, but it is for anyone."

After moving to CHS I tried a handful of different things and just never found the right fit for me. After baby #2 I wanted to try again... AOCF was running a challenge, 6 weeks of clean eating and at least 16 classes, setting goals, etc. I decided to go for it, a challenge is right up my alley and I knew the accountability would be good. Here's the thing, the places that left me feeling like it wasn't quite what I was looking for sometimes felt thrown together with classes (like 15 minutes of a body weight workout... if I'm coming for an hour class, I want to use that full hour and get the most out of my time). Also, I want good coaching... Kelly and Megan are awesome with this. And I found myself missing the community that I had built over time with CFA, AOCF has a really fun group of people and they are intentional about building community. So, I ended up being able to do a little over 5 weeks of the challenge (before going out of town for a bit). I dropped 17lbs and not only did my time get a lot better with the workout, but I can feel the changes, I feel better. I'm looking forward to continuing with AOCF and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to someone else!

I usually frequent the West Ashley location, but it is only a few months old so it's not yet on Yelp. Emily Valentine teaches core vinyasa on Sundays, and it is always a great time! She has an amazing playlist and is always motivating and supportive. I always leave feeling like I really worked out my whole body and I am ALWAYS sore the next few days, but it's a good feeling because I know I worked hard in Emily's class! I also highly recommend their assisted deep stretch class. It's very relaxing and it feels so good to stretch and take your mind off of everything going on. The studio spaces are always clean and well taken care of. There's only been a couple times where a class was really crowded, but we always make it work!

All that could have been ok if the class had been ... enjoyable enough to do. Why did the teacher have a headpiece for screaming instructions, when there is no way the room wouldn't be covered just fine by her voice. I tried for about fifteen minutes, trying to follow her sometimes muted screaming by looking around me. I gave up and went to the front desk where they kindly said this was normal and offered me a cup of earplugs to pick from. I took them and used them for about three minutes when I gave up. The place purposefully makes it so loud that they have odes of earplugs in a cute little jar on the counter. That's just messed up. I usually do vinyasa flow, my friend does Bikram and neither of us really knew what this class was. Worst $30 one a class pass ever.

The trainers are motivating, and the community is very friendly and encouraging. I never in a million years would have expected to fall in love with working out, in a boot camp environment especially, but I have become obsessed with Burn. The trainer at this locations's name is Amos and he really is amazing. He is not at all what you would expect a trainer would be like at a boot camp. Amos is 100% encouraging, positive, and helpful while finding the perfect spot that pushes you to your limits. I have seen him modify these work outs for people with a wide variety of injuries so that every workout can be done by every person. Each workout every week (open 6 days a week) focuses on a different area of your body to target and is planned so that you can participate for most days even if you are sore. Burn is only 45 minutes but it is incredibly fast paced and before you know it, it's over and so is your workout time for the day! Burn focuses on the training of women but there are a few co-ed classes. They also have a free Saturday class if you are wanting to give it a try. They also offer free childcare for parents! They are usually running specials for people who want to try out Burn without fully committing such as a free two week trial as well as 8 week programs for discounted prices. Just go check this place out and see why everyone loves feeling the burn!!!!

After relocating to Johns Island, I needed a new place to work out. This was the first, and last gym that I toured. It's immediately apparent after walking in that cleanliness and friendliness are two of the top priorities of this facility. The equipment is incredibly varied and you should be able to find everything you need for a good workout. When you enter there is a small table and sitting area to the left where you can sign up for a membership or chill out. The gym offers a wide open space with really good distancing in between machines so it never feels too crowded. The back of the gym has a small area with cubbies where you can leave your bags, personal items, and anything you don't want to carry around with you. The entire facility is accessed through a key fob and their are security cameras scattered throughout the building. You really don't get the feeling that anyone is going to steal anything because of the community vibe of the gym. There are bathrooms and showers on site for gym members, and a small refrigerator with drinks that uses the honor system for payment. WIFI is available and the connection has been great from all corners of the gym. Most notably, the staff and trainers always have positive attitudes and say hello when you walk in. A special shout out to Mackenzie for always helping out members when it's needed and for always having an infectious smile that makes you feel welcome. If you're looking for a new gym in the Johns Island area, they offer a free trial day so you can see what it's like for yourself!
