Roughout Ranch has been an absolute blessing. My 6 year old daughter came to me when she was only 8…read moremonths old. In that short time, she already had such traumatic experiences she developed PTSD. She has also been diagnosed with AdHD, Autism, depression and anxiety. When she was 3, we found Roughout Ranch. She has loved horse since she was a baby. I was hoping to find a program that would fit her needs. There are others in our area, I visited with their clients (who seemed happy with them). But I just didn't feel they were right for my little one. However, Roughout Ranch has been perfect. Her visits are just her (even before the pandemic). My grandson also goes and they often will have their visits scheduled together. Kathy still tailors the visits according to their individual needs. My daughter has become so much more patient and aware of other's feelings. They are also working on conquering some of her fears. You can definitely tell when she has not been to the ranch in awhile. I only wish she could visit everyday!

He answered all in the questions without any Negative feedback whatsoever, no pushy, no sales talk or anything like that, he was open. He was honest, his pricing was fair. He gave me the complete breakdown of how much of whole cow compared to a 1/2 cow. Compared to the processing fee, and there were several ranchers that were a lot closer to me Because i'm right here in sacramento and they are a two and a half hour drive away. But can't beat his prices can't beat his customer service and right now I honestly could say i've bought two cows from this company yes, I have a big family. But I also just like beef, and I like steak and I'm on the carnivore diet. So I like eating meat but I didn't go with the company, Based on just the reviews, honestly, I went to the company. Based on my interactions with Travis and like I said he was honest he was fair. He answered all my questions without hesitation. And he made things easy. If I had any concerns, he put em to rest even all the way up to the day of harvest. Now I'll talk a little bit about the meat. The meat is extremely good. It's like I want to say fresh. But heck, it's fresh, it's fresh from the cow fresh and processor processed it perfectly. For me and it's like we made our first couple roasts and it's like I will honestly say it's better than any beef that I've ever bought from the store. Definitely. We'll be buying from them again. Maybe not in the next year or so since i did get two cows. I got more meat that allows me a year or so, but I'm pretty sure within the next year and a half. I will probably be looking again because I know my kids are gonna be taking some of the meat home with them But I definitely would recommend Travis and his family to all my family and friends and in fact, I already have, and I think 3 or 4 of them actually already bought their own whole cows. So definitely if you're looking to buy a whole cow. And you wanna save money on your beef. Definitely. Look up. TX Bar Grassfed Cattle Company and send them a message they respond fast not days or weeks. Also I almost forgot. You can also be on-site on your harvest day. If you wish to take certain sections of the cow that the butcher processor won't bring back to the shop. Because of certain reasons. If you want those items, you just need to let Travis know. And he'll let you know around the time that your cow would be harvested on that day. And you can be there to collect those items on-site. Just came back from the opening weekend. It was so much fun and completely different than our first…read moreexperience last summer. Last summer it was hot! This time it was cool with snow and hail, but beautiful nevertheless. Activities: Our kids loved archery, pony rides, pool time, and hiking. We even got to see some new animals. A new marmot family moved in to the camp grounds. Got an awesome photo of the baby kissing mommy marmot. There was a honeycomb bear. Super cool in the giant field of green. The adult group got massages, ate really well every night. The staff were incredibly nice and helpful. Looking forward to our 3rd trip next year. Accommodations: We stayed at the cabins. We are a group of two family and had two cabins, which was perfect. In the mornings, my son would run over to the next cabin and get his friend to go to the dining room for breakfast by themselves. Next year we're getting a bungalow and our family will be side by side with shower in the room. Cabins don't have electricity and shower. You can take showers by the swimming pool. It's faces the horse stable, which is not an issue in terms of noise and if you love horses. Horses are very quiet and pretty. My kids really enjoyed going over to feed the horses every morning. Duplex is closest to the lodge and dining area, but gets sun hitting it first thing in the morning. It's has the most space if you group has many people. Bungalows has the best view. It faces the field and in the shady area, doesn't get morning sun. It has its own shower and bathroom.

Drakesbad Guest Ranch - Beautiful setting, but still room for improvement…read more Drakesbad Guest Ranch is set in a truly spectacular location, but a few operational issues prevent it from being the exceptional experience it could be. We booked a two-night stay in one of the Annex 2 cabins. About a week before arrival, I attempted to extend our reservation by an additional night. I called multiple times and left messages but never received a return call. I also sent an email and never received a response. As a result, the extra night was never added. When I arrived, I brought it up in person and was told by the property manager that I would need to return at 3:00 p.m. to see if anything was available. He explained that their communication system had been experiencing issues and that calls and emails sometimes do not come through because of limited connectivity and spotty internet service. Unfortunately, this was my first impression. Needless to say, the additional night was never added. This communication issue really needs to be addressed. If guests need to modify, confirm, or cancel reservations, they should be able to reach someone reliably. The ranch itself is located in a remote meadow valley within Lassen Volcanic National Park. It is surrounded by forest recovering from the devastating 2021 Dixie Fire. Burned trees still cover many of the hillsides, but the landscape is showing remarkable signs of recovery. The meadow is filled with tall green grass, colorful wildflowers, and deer grazing throughout the fields. Despite the fire's scars, the setting remains stunning. Upon arrival, I was surprised to find no clearly marked reception desk or office. There are no signs directing guests where to check in, so you may need to find an employee for assistance. The property manager personally checks guests in using a laptop and escorts them to their room or cabin. There is also no information provided in the rooms. No guest guide or information sheet was available, so be sure to ask questions about meals, amenities, and property operations. Since there is no cell service, I asked about Wi-Fi. The ranch uses Starlink, but during our stay the signal was only reliably available outdoors and not inside the cabins. Given today's connectivity expectations, a mesh network or Wi-Fi extenders would significantly improve the guest experience. That said, being mostly off the grid was actually refreshing. Guests should also know that the Annex cabins do not have electric lighting. Small solar-powered lanterns are provided and offer just enough light to get around after dark. In addition, power to the ranch is shut off nightly from 10:00 p.m. until 6:00 a.m., so plan accordingly and charge devices during the day. The Annex cabins appear relatively new and are in good condition. My only design criticism is the deck railing. It sits almost exactly at eye level when seated, partially blocking what should be one of the cabin's best features--the VIEW. One of the highlights of our stay was the dining experience. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included, and the staff were consistently friendly, welcoming, and attentive. The food exceeded expectations, and it sounded like the kitchen was happy to accommodate dietary restrictions. They also offered a nice selection of beers from local breweries, which was especially enjoyable after a long day of hiking. Unfortunately, horseback riding was unavailable during our visit. From what we were told, reservations appear to depend heavily on a single staff member. If that individual is unavailable, horseback rides may not be offered, which was disappointing. One important clarification for prospective guests: despite what some older information may suggest, Drakesbad no longer has a hot spring pool. The pool was damaged during the Dixie Fire and later destroyed by flooding. Today, all that remains is a pipe flowing hot spring water into a nearby creek. The surrounding hiking trails, including Devil's Kitchen, Boiling Springs Lake, and Terminal Geyser, were excellent and provided some of the best experiences of the trip. A few sections were heavily overgrown with thorny vegetation, so hiking pants are recommended. In some places the trail became difficult to follow because of vegetation encroachment. During the summer months, you'll also encounter hikers on the Pacific Crest Trail, which adds a unique element to the experience. Overall, we enjoyed our stay and but probably not return. The setting is undeniably beautiful, the staff are friendly, and the food is surprisingly good. However, improvements to communication, guest information, signage, Wi-Fi coverage, and activity coordination would elevate Drakesbad Guest Ranch from a pleasant stay to a truly exceptional destination.

Vaquera ranch was so delightful. The kids had a great time feeding and petting the animals and riding the horses. It was such a peaceful getaway and Pam the host was so charming and helpful. The nearby towns of Penn Valley and Nevada city were higher end then a lot of the other western towns I had been to around California and had some great dining options. We were able to visit the mining museum and stop over in Tahoe to see some snow for the kids. The estate also had a great hot tub and we were able to bbq steaks at night and there was plenty of outdoor space for dining. We had a great restful time and it was a great weekend getaway. Pam even made us home made breakfast and dinner which was also delightful! Highly recommend!

I was traveling with family and friends, including two energetic 7 year old girls who are nuts for animals (with the attention span of a gnat). Pam's place is majestic, a quick hour to skiing, hiking, etc. At first we felt we were MILES into the sticks but once we got our bearings it was a very quick 10-minute drive out to the store. We didn't cook much but if we had to there were pots and pans, a nice-sized cuisinart hot plate (everything there is top of the line!!), a Kuerig coffee pot with biodegradable pods (which we appreciated). The wine fridge was enough to keep some groceries if you wanted. And by groceries, I stored beer in there. The kids loved movie night on the big screen TV, doing crafts around the beautiful kitchen table, and of course going down to see the horses. The large tub, we couldnt get them out of it...which was absolutely perfect, they were filthy at the end of each day! We enjoyed the massive show the sky gave us come night time! Stars galore! Pam was over the top generous with her time. Memories of the ranch and the space Pam has created for her furry, four-legged family will live warmly in our hearts until we return.

It's barely marked anymore and most folks driving this particular grade of rough road nowadays, are so focused on the zigzag of the roadway and steep terrain they drive right by never even knowing what legends were once a part of the history of the green valley below. Long ago in the 1930s through the late 1940s, this was the home and final resting place of the world famous race horse Sea Biscuit and more specifically that of its owner San Francisco businessman Charles Howard who was quite an interesting fellow. The glory days of a simpler time are gone and the 16,000 acre "ranch" itself has evolved over the decades. Howard brought "albino white deer" to the valley decades ago, and if you're lucky you can still catch a glimpse of them. They stay in the same range they always have and can only be found here. Howard's name is all over the community just a bit north of it, the areas hospital bears the name of Howard's son.
