LIFT is an amazing nonprofit organization with a mission to improve the literacy abilities of its…read morestudents by teaching them skills to pass their GED exams, thereby attaining better jobs to support themselves and their families. For the past two years, I've been proud to volunteer as an adult basic literacy instructor. The class is centered around teaching adults basic phonics so they can progress to a level of reading and spelling multi-syllable words. However, LIFT also offers courses at other levels, including pre-GED, ESL (English as a Second Language), and family classes in partnership with DISD. Almost all classes are offered at the Main Campus at the Opportunity Center in south Dallas, but there are several ESL classes all across the Dallas metroplex. LIFT has an amazing mission, and they are more than willing to equip those who want to volunteer with the appropriate training. When I see my students excel or grasp a new concept, I can't help but feel that LIFT has been one of the most rewarding experiences in my life thus far. My leader pressured us to be extremely vulnerable. It was a large room, but the four of us in the session were seated shoulder to shoulder in chairs five feet from the speaker, while 25 feet behind us a volunteer sat behind us and listened to us discuss our life struggles. When I shared something personal that made me cry, the leader encouraged me to repeat it for the group. I felt that her intent was to trick me into believing that the Landmark Forum will be the answer to all my problems. Thinh N., the reviewer on 11/27/17, was a volunteer at my session. He followed me after I left the room, trying again to get me to sign up. For a moment I was afraid that he was going to try to prevent me from leaving.
