2.6 After many years ago eating here regularly when we lived in NE Warren county, we returned for lunch today. The place looks great and the server was fantastic. The food, the food was not fantastic, not good, not okay even. If you have ever wondered what prison food is like? Do you ask why your grandfather has stopping eating his nursing home meals? Was there for a birthday party. Had supper there had hot roast beef and mashed potato. It was excellent. The flavor of the gravy was amazing. Had Apple pie for dessert and it was excellent. This is a nice spot on the square in Indianola that I hit up before a long day of youth basketball. We went for the weekend breakfast buffet. They have a tone of sweet breads and desserts, as well as some stalwarts--sausage, bacon, scrambled eggs. They had some awesome cheesy hashbrowns, biscuits and gravy, and French toast sticks as well. Our server checked in regularly and refilled beverages; plates were cleared efficiently as well, which is all I need for a buffet. read more

Had this place recommended to me once.... " If only for the pie, they have amazing pie!" They certainly do! I don't come up too often... When I do, I normally eat my slice first. They ALWAYS have at least 4 varieties of pie choices: fruit, cream, or meringue. There's always a comfort food special for lunch, that is not only delicious; it's very affordable. Today was the first time I've come in for breakfast. Had the Eggs Benedict with an extra side of bacon. Oh my holy TOOTS and A HALF! The hollandaise is definitely from scratch and the pouched eggs are absolutely PERFECT! I like to sit at the counter. We were on a girl's trip to Lake of the Ozarks and took an hour detour to eat at Crouse Cafe ans have their homemade pie. Five years earlier the girls has eaten there and remembered how good it was. Warm cherry and rhubarb/strawberry pie just out of oven was delicious. I also had a pork tenderloin dinner. Best tenderloin I have ever had with mashed potatoes and gravy. The meal came with bread with tomatoes which I had never had, cottage cheese and a dinner roll for under $10. Amazing food and delicious pie well worth the drive. I just wish the cafe was in our town!! We all came home with pie and would have taken whole pies home but they need a 24 hour notice which is very fair. A shout out to our waitress who answered all of our questions and managed to keepeall of our orders straight. Thank you!! read more

My family stopped in for a quick bite. My son ordered the French dip and the rest of us ordered taco salads. You have the choice of ground beef or chicken. The bowl was a shell which was crispy and it was piled high with ground beef, lettuce, tomatoes, sour cream, and salsa. Everything was oh so delicious! We had apple pie à la mode for dessert. I have been coming to Crouse Cafe since I was a small child. Their staff has always been super friendly, welcoming, and attentive. Crouse Cafe is definitely a place where you are fed and feel like family. Servers and staff have always offered smiles and interacted with my children, no matter their age. Their food is always delicious from biscuits and gravy or omelettes to Fried chicken, roast beef dinner, or Hot beef sandwiches. I have tried so many things on the menu, I've not found anything I've disliked. Their onion rings are the best and always a great starter or replacement for fries. It's hard to find that classic restaurant that has delicious home cooked food like Mom used to make, served in hearty portions by friendly, thoughtful servers that make you want to come back the next day. We found that in Crouse Cafe - no wonder it's been open for over 75 years! Our server, Kim, was the nicest person - she made sure we had tall spoons to stir sweetener in our iced tea, and suggested that we have pickled jalapeños in our Rueben sandwiches- amazing! And we had the best homemade fruit pie for breakfast- ala mode! Our food came quick and in large portions- it was a shame to have to leave some great onion strings uneaten. The food is fine. It's exactly what you'd expect from a cafe. I ordered a tortellini soup that had clearly been heated for a long time and the pasta was in pieces. It tasted okay but it wasn't what I expected. I understand that it's a go to place in town but it's underwhelming. read more

I love to find mom and pop diners and I hit the jackpot when I found Crouse Cafe! I had a blueberry pancake and bacon. It was absolutely fantastic! My husband had the hot roast beef sandwich. It was huge and great! We saw the old fashioned milkshakes and yummy pies being delivered to other tables. I live in Ankeny -37 miles away- and one of these days I'm going to drive down JUST for pie and milk shakes. And the prices! OMG! So inexpensive! My new favorite family diner. This is a great example of Midwest hospitality and good cafe food. The hash browns may be a little greasy at times but the personality that flows from this cafe makes up for the difference. Locals you have it made! If you are a small town Indianolian you have it made. I spent the night at a friend's and we walked around the corner to this cafe the next morning. We just to have happened to get to the door moments before they opened. There was at least 9 cars with people sitting and waiting to come in for the Sunday brunch. We sat in a booth and watched them flock to the buffet. There were so many regulars their tables were set up in advance to have their own spot in this cafe. I got to take a look at the buffet but it was way more food then I could eat for the great 8 dollar price. So much good food in fact I barely got to look before the line had formed to eat it. We had a small breakfast instead and the waitress was very prompt with our orders and meals. I think the locals have it down and know when to hit the right times. I hear right after church there is a wait to get in the door. I am sure I will be back the next time I visit Indianola. I feel jealous I don't have a place that's close to my home like this. I love a good small town diner and this is a great one. The breakfast was good and the buffet looked amazing. read more
