Having stayed in probably 10 different IHG properties so far this year, this was by far the lowest quality and the most disappointing. This hotel had maybe 15-20 parking spots TOTAL at the hotel, for a hotel that has 17 floors and hundreds and hundreds of rooms. When we pulled in, half the parking lot was blocked off with cones and the rest of the spots were full. There is sign that says you can use a parking garage up the street and have it validated but when it's snowing out and you have luggage and there's no clear signage explaining how to get to the parking garage AND you finally get to the garage only to find out that the garage is old and low and does not have high enough clearance to accommodate a standard SUV (granted it was an escalade, so it is a larger SUV, but still a standard height!) it's pretty frustrating. As a platinum IHG rewards member, I normally get a small upgrade (subject to availability, of course) and a welcome letter and complimentary bottles of water, even at the chain's budget brand hotels. Here, even though the room was booked with points (so clearly they knew I was a rewards member), not even so much as a 'thanks for your loyalty', let alone water or an upgrade. When the hotel is near empty, it feels like a bit of an insult that they wouldn't even put us in a room on the side of the hotel with a better view, or something. I'm pretty sure we got the worst room in the place. Or if it was NOT the worst - I would be scared to see what rooms that were worse than ours looked like. The clerk checked me in and told me our room number would be xx06. As he was handing me the keys, the phone at the station next to him rang, so another clerk grabbed it. I heard the lady who answered the phone say oh, room xx06? Sorry it's already taken. Yep the guest already checked in. Hmm, name is_____ and said my name. I said to the guy checking me in, uhh, she just said my name and room number, what's going on? He got the girls attention, the two of them turned away from us and talked for a second and then she said oh your room's not clean yet, so we'll just put you in a different room. Since we were checking in very late in the afternoon, I just can't imagine the room wasn't clean. Also the hotel could not have been very full... Late March is the lowest time of year in billings. Half the town was closed down as it was Easter Sunday. I think someone just wanted that room so they bumped us out of it. Which wouldn't have been that big a deal, except 1) I don't appreciate being lied to, and 2) I'm pretty sure they put us in a downgraded replacement room. I can only speak for the floor we were put on, but that floor was dark, stained and dingy in the hallways. It couldn't have had more than 8-ft ceilings as my 6-ft husband could easily put his palms flat on the ceiling. It feels old and claustrophobic and just really makes you think of a damp, dank jail hallway or something. Inside the room, it was clean but again dated, dark, dingy feeling. Low, cracked and warped popcorn ceilings, banged up/scraped/scratched furniture, cheap, peeling/warped interior door to the bathroom, and metal plates covering up large sections of wall all added to the yucky feel of the room. A small window facing the roof of industrial building didn't help. The mattress was extremely hard, unpadded, and had springs poking me in the back. There was a strong, sickly sweet smell of something fake and chemically that reminded me of perfume gone bad, as if they tried to douse the room with smell to cover up worse smells. The desk clerk said they had a happy hour in the executive lounge from 5-7pm so we headed up to check that out. What a disaster. Not only was the 'lounge' just a larger hotel room with a different furniture configuration, but also - they RENTED IT OUT to a large family for a kids party!! I have never in my life heard of such a thing. And, hey front desk, maybe don't send members to the lounge when you rented it out to a private party!! That was beyond obnoxious to me and seemed completely inappropriate. Lastly, extremely loud saw, drilling, and hammering noises which seemed like they were directly above us began very early in the morning. I guess it's good that there is much-needed construction going on but it would be nice if it were not extremely loud and directly above my head first thing in the morning. Especially when you know the hotel couldn't have been very full!! Could they not have put us a little further away from the noise? I can't imagine we could possibly have been any closer to it - it was SO loud I took video of it but not sure if this site will let me post video. Overall, just an extremely disappointing experience from what I expected to be an upper midscale hotel but instead felt like a scary, old motel 6. I would rather sleep in my car than pay $120 or tens of thousands of points to stay here again. I'm giving it two stars ONLY because it is very conveniently located. read more

Not a bad hotel, as long as you don't pay full retail price. I used an online service and got the room for about 35% off, which put it right where it ought to be. If you pay full price, there are way better options in Billings. Parking is a pain in the butt. The hotel parking lot is almost always full, so you have to park in the parking garage across the street. You have to get your ticket validated every time before you leave and it's a chore hauling all your luggage. The area around the hotel is pretty rugged with lots of sketchy people around. Not a real safe place after dark. The room itself was very clean, which is most important to me. The staff was friendly and professional, too. The only problem I had was there was no refrigerator, which is pretty unforgivable in a room at this price. Also, the internet was relatively slow, clocking in at around 2 MBPs download - not bad, but most places in this price range offer faster speeds. Tried to use Netflix but it was choppy. The bar was nice, but WAY overpriced. A domestic beer was $5. I was on the 11th floor and had a great view of downtown. I recommend the Crown Plaza, just don't pay full price. read more

Yes friends, as I author this review its 2012 and I'm knee deep in the dash for Priority Club Platinum status... The Crowne Plaza Billings has the distinction of being my first PC hotel for 2012. And lucky for me the hotel was a very nice surprise to find in a place like Montana. When you're in a rough neck cowboy town like Billings you never know what you're going to find when it comes to hotels. I was in town for 3 nights and needed to get going on my Priority Club nights for the year. The Crowne came up and in the picture there was this grand multi story building said to be located in the downtown close to the airport. Sounds good, and at $111 a night on the AAA rate on PriorityClub.com it seemed like a bargain. I was told the building is the 2nd tallest in Montana, and the hotel takes up the 1st through 17th floors of the 20+ story building. Its an older building probably from the 80's but it has been very tastefully remodeled recently into one of the nicer Crowne's I've had the pleasure of staying at. The interior is full of modern western motif with lots of browns, dark woods and metals. I enjoyed some of the most interesting modern western artwork I've seen in one place. As a PC Platinum member I was place in a room on the key card only access level of 16. Floors 15-17 are the "Executive" levels that are key card access to get to. The room was a huge king bed room with a nice seating area with a couch and chair along with a work area with desk and entertainment center with a flat panel HDTV in the 30ish inch size. The linens were all fresh and white which insures they're having to clean them with each guest. They bathroom had nice fresh towels that were changed each day along with plenty of the normal nice Crowne toiletries. I also appreciate their sleep assistance stuff like the clip on the curtains and the eye mask they offer in the room. Yes there is popcorn ceilings in the room, I'm not sure why that matters because the rest of the room is very relivantly redecorated. Along with the excellent room, there is a 17th floor Concierge Lounge for Platinum members and anyone who also might book a qualifying room rate. They served free continental breakfast there in the morning and while I wasn't able to attend, drinks in the early evening. This is key card access lounge so it wasn't crowded as not all the guests can access. I appreciate things like that and I'm sure the others in the lounge did too. If you don't have access to the lounge there is not free breakfast... go to Holiday Inn Express for that. There was a great gym on the 4th floor with separate cardio and weight rooms. Unfortunately its only open till 11pm so if you're a late night exerciser like me you need to watch the clock. The parking lot is small in front of the hotel but they will validate your ticket each morning for the garage across the street. I just parked there nightly as the small surface lot was full by 7pm each night. There's a skybridge from the garage to the 2nd floor of the hotel. Just bring your ticket in with you to get validated. The service was very good and every person I encountered was extremely well manner and tended to my needs. The woman in the Concierge Lounge each morning was a excellent and probably the best service interaction I had. There's also a restaurant on floor 20 called Montana Sky if you want a nice fancy breakfast/dinner with the best view of Montana you can get. The bar Montana's is also on floor one. There's a full service Starbucks in building attached to the lobby, one of the few in the area it seems. This is a great hotel and I would and will be staying at it each and every time I am in the area. Enjoy the luxury Montana accommodations. read more

We didn't actually get to stay here because the staff was unbelievably rude and unaccommodating. We were moving cross-country and had booked a room here through Priceline. When we arrived the front parking lot was completely full, mostly with non-guests who were drinking it up in the lounge. They said we could park in the garage across the way and they'd validate. Great! We got there and discovered our car wouldn't make the clearance (we had a rooftop container). Their second and final suggestion was to park on the street. But there were signs posted that said there was no parking there starting at 8am. Considering it was already past 10pm and we had been driving for over 10 hours, we didn't want to have to wake up early and move it. So, we told them this. Their response was basically, "Oh, your car will be fine. The cops never check cars. But... we're sorry if anything happens to your car." Um, excuse me? What are you trying to imply exactly? Well, we asked for a refund. But since we paid through Priceline they flat out refused. They wouldn't even go for a voucher. We haggled them for a while longer for any kind of compensation, but they got increasingly agitated and actually told us to "leave and never come back." If you insist! So, we got in our car and drove away from the major dump that was Billings. Any city where you can confuse a Conoco oil refinery for the city skyline is certainly not a good one. read more

Overall, I was very happy with my stay at the Crowne Plaza a couple weeks ago. I was there for seven nights. While I've seen other people complain about the parking situation, I found that the shuttle driver was happy to take us anywhere we needed to go (not just to the airport), and Billings is not a walking-unfriendly town, so it was easy to get to restaurants. I had a room on one of the Executive levels, which I highly recommend, because it came with a complimentary breakfast and a cocktail hour between 5 and 7pm, both located in the Concierge Lounge on the 17th floor. The room itself was clean, with a comfortable bed and a very nice bathroom. There were a mini-fridge and a coffee maker, but no microwave, which was a bit of a disappointment, as I like to keep leftovers and reheat them when I travel, and that was not possible. My one main complaint was that the maid service was a little spotty. While the room was cleaned every day, I was surprised that the complimentary items (soaps, shampoos, conditioners, coffee packets) were not refreshed with any regularity, or when I ran out. Sometimes new ones would appear when I needed them and sometimes...not. Overall, I found it to be a pleasant experience and would be happy to return. read more

My wife and I have stayed at this hotel every year for the last 6 or 7 years for an annual convention. Each of the previous years we have been pleased with the hotel. It has a nice location, the room was always clean, and the beds were very comfortable. That was not the case this year. The housekeeping was sub-par. When we arrived, the room was not clean. The toilet had a ring inside of it. There was also dried urine running down the front of bowl to the floor, as well as feces also on the outside of bowl. The coasters under the drinking glasses were stained and appeared to have been previously used. The nightstand between the beds had greasy fingerprints/smears on it. None of these were cleaned during our stay. It appeared that the only thing housekeeping did was replace the towels and make up the bed. The toilet was never cleaned before we arrived or during our stay. Some days the toiletry items (soap, shampoo, etc) were not replaced. When we used the drinking glasses in the room, they were not cleaned/replaced. When I used the ice bucket, it was not emptied and replaced. We also had dinner one evening at the restaurant on the top floor. I think it is called "Montana Sky"? I ordered the cobb salad and my wife had the french dip. The cobb had macaroni pasta in it and the dressing tasted like it used miracle wip as the base. My wife's french dip wasn't hot, and it had quite a bit of fat & gristle. When we went back to our room, we both felt sick. I have always enjoyed the location and quality of this hotel. I am very disappointed and will be hard-pressed to try it again. read more

There is only one thing worse then a hotel shower that will not drain and that is urine around the base of a toilet. Unfortunately this hotel had both. GROSS! All I could think about was how many different people's hair was backing up the shower that my feet were standing in. The other thing I thought about was if these two basic and obvious items were not done properly then how many other non-obvious things were just as filthy if not worse?! I had never been to Billings... or Montana... in my life. I was here for a long weekend. Many of the places we visit have wonderful, quirky, small, boutique hotels. Not so reliable, it seemed, in Billings. I went with the Crowne Plaza downtown - because some research told me that the cool little microbreweries were within walking distance. My research was right - and the little historic district nearby was totes cool. I LOVED my room. I stayed on the 15th floor, in an executive room. It was really nice - and possibly recently remodeled. The one wall had subway tiles... and everything was very chic and modern. I'm not sure that all of the floors are just as chic... but mine was great. I would definitely stay here again. read more

This hotel was ranked high on Priceline, but didn't live up to that. Parking was free and easy, possibly the only good thing about this hotel. We got up to our room and settled in. First of all, there is no refrigerator and if you want a cold drink you have to go searching for the ice machine. Nowhere to be found on our floor. Now the shower... Doesn't drain. Perfect if you want to take a bath, but I didn't want to stand in ankle deep water after the shower was on for no more than 2 minutes. We called the front desk and asked for another room. They did so and sent the security guard up with the new room keys. The first thing we checked in the new room was the shower. Of course, this one didn't drain well either. Also, one thing you expect at any hotel is working power outlets. The two outlets next to the bed didn't work, but the lamp did. The three open outlets on the other side of the room next to the tv didn't work either. The only two working outlets we found were under the desk. Now the beds. The room had two full beds, we were expecting queens like many other hotels offer. The beds felt like you were sleeping on a rock and the pillows sunk in when you lay your head down, making it feel as if there was not even a pillow there. read more

I stayed here last night, and despite being a Priority Club member with no status, I was very impressed with the service I got. Upon arrival, I found front desk staff that were extremely friendly and accommodating. My room was very nice. It was not an upgraded room, but was more than sufficient size wise, and very clean and well kept. The only issue I had, which to me was really a non-issue, was what really made my stay exceptional. Shortly after checking in, a hotel staff member, who was showing someone a room tried to come into my room thinking it hadn't been occupied. Her key didn't work, so she never actually came in, but was very apologetic when I answered the door. It was clearly a mistake, and something I was not at all bothered by. About 5 minutes after this happened, I received a call in my room from the front desk apologizing for the mistake. Despite my insistence that it was not a problem, she was very kind in offering anything I need. She offered drinks or dinner, which I found to be above and beyond. I am a platinum member with Starwood, and can honestly say that I've never gotten that level of service is when addressing more serious issues with my room or stay. My only regret is that I'm awful with names, and don't recall any of the people who specifically helped me. Never the less, I will definitely be back when I am in Billings again. read more

Stayed for 3 days. Service was very good, I won't say anything bad about the staff, all were excellent, my room was always clean, no idea where some of the other posts come from on that. The lounge / bar thing on the first floor is nice, I haven't tried the food. 2-stars for, well, it's a 2-star hotel. They definitely got off the fashion & upgrade train back around the early 80's... original I think, used to be an old Sheraton I was told, they haven't re-painted. Cinder block wall in the hotel rooms.. really? Comfortable bed, definitely, clean bathrooms and the water was hot. Location is a dump, they have about 40 spaces in their parking lot for a 24 story building. Hilarious. you have to patrol for an open spot for quite a while usually, the street parking is a 2-hour maximum. It's not like Billings has "Public Transit".. they need to fix this or provide a free-deal with the high rise parking across the street. I don't want to pay for parking for a 3-digit hotel in a tiny city in Montana, its absurd. So it's across the street from soup kitchens and the thrift stores. If you are an Anytime Fitness member (like I am), Give it up, they don't seem to allow after-hours access beyond the 9-4 or whatever it is open (Anytime is across the street and the reason I picked the Crown). Every other gym in the system the pass-key works to get in "Anytime"... This one does as well, by the letter of the franchise deal, but they have man-trap immediately inside the building that you can't get out of. Very lame. There are a lot of people walking aimlessly around in this neighborhood, if you like to experience the local neighborhood, go for walks or a jog or something, I would recommend a different hotel/location. I recommend the McCormick Cafe though about a block or two away on Montana (East I think), I loved the breakfasts (2 days) that I ate there. read more

Three stars or fewer for the decor -- popcorn ceilings! -- but the staff and the extensive lobby are just great. We held a little family reunion here recently and I was delighted with the way everyone in the party was treated. I'm fairly fussy about housekeeping and this place is fine, even if the maintenance isn't top-notch. The walls are thin, so the ear plugs included in the little bag on the bed are more necessity than niceties. Parking is something of a hassle, like it is at a lot of city center hotels anywhere. But what I really care about is staff and housekeeping. This place strikes me as better than fine on both counts. And, honestly, I don't think Billings has anywhere better to stay. It might rank three stars or even two in other cities, but for Billings I give it four. read more

For me, horrible. I had several issues with this place and what's most frustrating is that they do not care. They have gotten paid and that's that. One of my issues was with the bed size, I confirmed 2 weeks in advance for a king size bed but instead they gave me two double beds. They were so small my legs hung over the end. Really hard to sleep. When I insisted on at least a queen size bed and they refused the clerk suggested I go elsewhere. Not a single effort to correct the problem just plain no. I was curious so when I got to my room I called the hotel from my cell phone and the guy on the phone said they had rooms available with king or queen size beds available I was floored. I identified myself they the guy said oh I am sorry I made a mistake there are no king or queen bed rooms available. LIAR. It turns out that if you book through a third party they screw you over as much as possible, I booked through Priceline who also sucks. They did not back me up at all, BEWARE of their services too. There is no refrigerator in the room so to have a cold drink in your room you have to track down an ice machine which are scattered all over the place but not the floor I was on. Beware of the soda machines. I put $1.75 into a machine and it would not accept the final quarter. It would not refund the money so I went to the front desk. They referred me to the Coca Cola Company to get a refund. Really. The staff seem to be depressed. They are not happy or at least they do not seem like at most places I have stayed. At most places the staff is upbeat and will do whatever they can to help you, not here. This hotel is extremely overpriced and I do not understand why. They have a long way to go before they actually earn what they charge. I suggest re staffing completely as the current staff is horrible. I usually stay at the SpringHill Suites when I stay in Billings for work, but had a conference at the Crowne Plaza so stayed here on this trip. For some reason my company told them that I wanted two beds (which I didn't, love a king when I travel so I can sprawl). They didn't have a double room available so they upgraded me to a king on the concierge floor, so not only did I have a great view, I had a king bed, free breakfast and happy hour. Staff was great and food was decent for banquet food. HOWEVER, got my bill this morning, glad my company paid, nightly rate (which I was assumed was discounted due to the conference I attended at the hotel) was over $200 per night with taxes and fees. Most Crowne Plaza hotels deliver decent and reliable medium-high end accommodations (if a bit corporate and sterile) but this one did not. Although the location in the heart of downtown Billings was a plus and it had a cool historical factor (it claims to be the tallest all-brick building in the world), the hotel is lacking in décor and cleanliness and charges unreasonably high rates considering the general condition and that it's in the midst of a major renovation. Billings was our first stop on a 10-day road trip through Montana and the Dakotas, and we spent 2 nights here. It's easy to find - the building is the tallest in town and visible from anywhere within a 5 mile radius. When we arrived we grabbed the last available spot in the onsite parking lot, which was taken over by trucks, tractors, cement mixers, etc. due to the renovation. There is a pay garage across the street in case the onsite lot is full. The check-in was smooth and easy and the front desk clerk was very friendly, but we could hear the hammers and drills from the lobby. The corridor leading to our 6th floor room was dark and dingy, had dirty boot prints on the rug, and smelled of B.O. Our room was similarly dark, the furnishings were old and dated, and the sheets on our bed had a few yellowish stains on them. Night noise was also a problem - the ice makers and the A/C units are old and very loud, and the walls are so thin you can hear the TV in the neighbouring rooms. When we found out our neighbours were watching Anthony Bourdain's "Parts Unknown," we tuned in on our set and hit mute, and we could make out the entire audio from listening to the TV next door through the wall. One thing this hotel does right aside from the friendly service is that it provides aromatherapy kits in the guest bathrooms. The essential oil spray and foot cream were soothing and relaxing. The rate of $179/night is exorbitant given the dated décor, the noise and the major renovation. Hopefully things will improve after the refurb is complete, but as of now I cannot recommend this hotel. read more

Nice place to stay in downtown Billings, right across the street from Walker's, one of the better restaurants in town. I've stayed here several times, service has always been solid and the rooms clean and comfortable. Sometimes you can get a room here on the cheap from Hotwire. read more

This is a very poor place to stay right now due to construction and the elevators are broken. You could wait up to five minutes for an elevator and the construction out front is very congested and leaves no parking for anybody other than the contractors it is also very loud. read more

I arrived for a midweek stay, and for some reason over half of the parking lot was taped off, kind of like a crime scene or something. I really struggled to find parking. For some reason, hotel management had leased their only parking lot out to a group or something. This has to be the only hotel in MT that would do this. I stay at the Crowne Plaza on business on a fairly frequent basis. The rooms are nicely decorated and very well laid out for my needs - the beds are very comfortable and the rooms are of a nice size. The hotel is right downtown and convenient to dozens of restaurants in the area. However, I would say that the strongest feature of the hotel is the staff. They are always friendly and will do whatever they can to accommodate their guests. I'm always happy to stay there. read more

Stayed here for a night over Easter weekend and it was great. Had a 16th floor executive room with a great view and comfortable king size bed. The room and bathroom were clean and the front desk was helpful. We also took in the Easter brunch in the 20th floor restaurant and it was very good.
