Its a once in a lifetime stay that I would never repeat but I probably put the $5k I spent to better use as a down payment on a new car but you only live once!

Too specific, y'think? Probably, but that's my expectation and, damn it, I'm the customer! Which brings us to The Ivy House, a great pub stuck on a hillocks to the side of the Amersham Road. We visited with a quite-large party, in the latter hours of what is generally considered lunchtime. It was to be our last big meal before flying home, and I had taste buds that needed to be sated for about another year. The place delivered mightily. Pleasingly for our diverse crew, it had a great selection of meals for traditionalists, kids, and vegetarians. Service was swift and friendly absent the balding landlord and trollopy wife in my imagination but full of an efficient waiter who couldn't have been more helpful. The roast beef was good but, as the last of the day, it was a little dry and gristly. The rhubarb and ginger crumble with custard was lovely, though perhaps a tad too sweet for some. All five of the kids with us thoroughly enjoyed their meals, too, so the whole party was completely happy. The ale I had was the icing on the cake (not literally), though it's name now escapes me. The Ivy House is an excellent spot for a great Sunday lunch. They had signs in the pub, asking for patrons to support an effort to stop a new train track being laid across the fields right in front of the pub. I surely hope they succeed in this effort. The pub's in a very serene spot. If we're ever in the area again, we'll be back.

There is a gym that guests can use for a small fee that is 3 minutes away but it doesn't open until 8 or 9am depending on the day. That is too late for me since I was going to work early every day. The rooms are tiny with a double bed. I had a view of the rooftop next door. The mattress was pretty firm and the bed had 4 pillows one of which was a feather. The bathroom had a nice shower with one of those rain shower heads and the water got really hot. The shower door was one of those half doors that doesn't close. That seems a bit weird but it worked. The bathroom has a towel warmer but mine was not working which was unfortunate. It also got a bit stuffy in my room at night luckily the window was able to open a little bit, enough for fresh air! There are coffee pods, and tea in the room. I love that they give you the Walkers biscuits in your room. They are so good and there were many flavors that they replenished every day. Also they gave you water in your mini fridge. My co worker was not happy that there was no lotion or conditioner in the bathroom. She asked for lotion at the front desk but then had to buy some conditioner. I always bring mine so it wasn't a big deal for me. My reservation came with a buffet breakfast in the restaurant. It was your traditional English breakfast The coffee was horrible. 2/10 on the coffee scale. The location is fabulous and very walkable. Kitty corner to the Windsor castle and shopping is steps away.

Conclusion - a well presented, efficient accommodation for whatever you like to do. Ah The Bull…read more Probably the most confusing layout of a hotel I've ever stayed in. Granted, England is a very old country and so the hotels are not the modern monoliths I am accustomed to. My co workers and I were booked here as it is one of the nicer accommodations near Pinewood Studios. This hotel struck me as a very business oriented hotel, not a place where one would go for a holiday (holiday is vacation in American English). The hotel features several large ballrooms used for conferences and they also have a beautiful garden in which they host weddings. The hotel is shaped like a square 'U' with the main areas being the bottom of the U and the rooms being the two uprights. To get to our rooms we had to walk through the Jack Shrimpton bar and snake our way past several doors and through 4 different corridors. The car park surrounds the hotel and there are more convenient entrances from those areas but our driver always dropped us of at the front of the hotel. The room I was in was big enough for two. The bathroom featured a very high bath with a fixed shower head, the standard heated towel rack. The bed was plenty firm and the little safe was just large enough for my American money and knick knacks I didn't want to lug around in my purse. Something that struck me right away was the lack of a clock. None to be had in the room. Time would be shown on the TV screen if you pushed the button but then it would disappear after 45 seconds or so. So bring an alarm clock, use your phone or schedule a wake up call if you need one. The mini bar/mini fridge in my room had also been taken out. Strange and kind of a deal breaker for me. I like keeping my own water and snacks in my own fridge, I eat a lot, what can I say. The blackout curtains worked really well for me. The bay windows made for an odd shape but the curtains were hardy enough that you could tuck them into one another to prevent the sun from leaking in at 5 in the morning (Oh English summers). It was funny how the two different bars at the hotel served different drinks. The Jack Shrimpton featured more ales on tap but had set hours. The other unnamed bar was pretty much 24 hours but had a limited selection of beers. So if you wanted a different beer you'd have to walk a bit back to the JS bar. Not a big deal. Because there weren't a lot of eateries within walking distance most of our stay there we ate at the bar or the Beeches Restaurant. The bar food was actually pretty good and the triple cooked chips (fries) were very nice. Alas, it is bar food so it was a lot of grease that my body was not that OK with. Overall the hotel is very nice but due to the old construction the hotel itself is very loud. I could hear everyone walking outside and all of the heavy doors slamming as businessmen left early in the morning. It was a little unnerving and since I was only there for a week, I never really got used to it. On one of the last nights we were there the Bull was hosting a wedding reception. They left a note in the room saying to expect some noise and that the complimentary breakfast bar in morning would be busy at certain times, which they indicated with a red, yellow and green time frames. The party wasn't too crazy, I could hear the music until 1:30 AM but it was a Friday, so not a huge deal. I wouldn't go calling this a 5 star hotel and I really just took a star off a four for the noise of the door and people walking around. If you're a fitness nut, the area surrounding offers some beautiful countryside to jog in and is relatively safe, even in the early morning. Overall, not a bad place to stay in Gerards Cross.

Superb scenery outside, great service staff who were always ready with the drink and canapes. The canapes themselves were exquisite. Speaking of snacks, Stoke Park does the nicest tea service I have ever encountered. I could devour all three tiers of sandwiches and sweets all by myself, but only because I am little piggy.

Easy to find as the signs in the Queen's terminal are large and everywhere (good job sign posting, unlike terminal 5). The rooms are a bit dated and not laid out intuitively. The safe is in the night stand and when open it bumps against the bed. The faucet in the bathroom sink has little clearance from the basin and thus water gets everywhere when washing your hand/face. The shower head sprays water and with a glass wall (vs shower curtain) gets outside the tub and the tile gets wet. These little design wonkiness is what makes it a 4 (vs 5). This place is popular with large groups. The restaurant is solid - fantastic greek salad and the grilled salmon perfect. The runway rooftop bar is also a must do (you can get non alcoholic drinks). An added bonus was the rooftop bar where you could watch airplanes coming in or leaving. I'd definitely stay here again. The bathrooms and rooms were clean. The AC actually keeps you cool too.
