Dancing at MSD was one of the worst experiences of my life. My overall time spent at this studio…read moreexasperated negative mental health symptoms by the director, Tiffany Martin. I joined the studio when I was 16, in hopes of refining my technique, as well as finding a familial community in the dance environment. Unfortunately that couldn't be farther from the truth. The turning point for me was a particular incident in which Tiffany came out to the lobby to yell in my face for asking to leave class early due to mental health circumstances. I will add that I got permission from the teacher to leave class early. As someone who promotes mental health advocacy, this response was shocking to me. I was made to feel as if I had done something wrong, and was asked to apologize for my behavior after advocating for myself. I felt particularly vulnerable because the director was privy to certain past experiences I have had, and I was very unsettled by the fact that she handled it in a way that was triggering to me and my classmates. Aside from this isolated incident, this program instills a culture of perfectionism by the way it is structured. The extreme academia that is promoted is not a realistic way to educate students in dance, and does not set them up to succeed. I'm aware of the benefits that a pedagogical approach can have on training strong dancers, however, the remedial and glacial pace of the program delayed my development as a dancer. It is simply not conducive to a dancer who aspires for a professional career. An example of this is my solo from Martin's 2023 Recital. My solo consisted of skills that I had not worked on all year due to the pace of ballet class, but was still expected to do regardless. Perfection was not only instilled on stage but also in class, whereas dancers, we should feel safe to make mistakes and learn from them. We weren't allowed to progress our skills in class until they were perfect, which is an unattainable goal for anyone. Despite the unfortunate time spent at Martin, it has not deterred me from continuing to dance. I have since found a studio where I feel safe to make many mistakes, work at a reasonable pace, and have had the opportunity to take class with nationally renowned professional companies and gain professional experience. I have seen the growth despite only being there a year. Currently, I am auditioning for colleges looking towards a BFA in dance. To anyone considering enrolling here, based on my experience, it is not a nurturing environment physically or mentally. I can say with absolute certainty that I would not be technically or mentally ready and "good enough" for these programs if I had stayed at Martin School of Dance.

One character kept the script in-hand the entire show and certain scenes were clumsy, rather than funny. A farce is a very specific form of comedy, which takes acting chops to pull off. Overall, entertaining for what it was and the cost, but disappointing from a stage direction standpoint.

The next 2 hours were at an outdoor shooting range where we took what we learned in the classroom to the range. The instructors were there with us the whole time instructing us for the correct way to hold the gun, stance, etc. Again- I highly recommend them to anyone that wants to learn more about guns. Great job I will be back for more classes!!
