I've been meaning to write a review as I've tried just about everything on the Cruzteca menu. This tried and true full service restaurant and bar has a tongue-bending selection of Mexican entrees to satisfy even discriminating palates. Everything is made fresh from homemade ingredients and their Margaritas can cool you down on the hottest Texas summer days. Their Escobar Tacos (Carne Guisada) are perfectly prepared and personally my favorite. I recently tried their Beef Enchiladas and they took me back to when I was kid, needless to say they were delicious!!! The plentiful Especiales plates and prix fix breakfast, variety of Tacos and Enchiladas menu make ordering easy, and the value in itself is worthy of repeated encores. Yikes at this place! Beware: don't bring your reusable water bottles in here no outside food or water allowed (stated by the waiter)!! First time ever coming to this place, we were seated and we waited a while seeing that people were just in a corner staring at us. If you're in Austin tx right now you KNOW it's hot in the 100's! So yep, I carry a nice refreshing water bottle with me! While waiting instead of asking what we wanted to drink some man comes up and says we're not allowed to have outside food drink it's against the health code and he likes to come as he's doing me a service by letting me put my water in a cup (he brought the glass) before even asking what I wanted to drink lol. So weird. Then asks if I want a coke? It's HOT I don't want a coke/sugar I want refreshing water. All I say is wow this has never happened before to me, I'm an avid bring my water bottle everywhere person and out of all the hundreds of restaurants this is the first this EVER has occurred. If anything I went on to the next restaurant (bc yes we left and didn't eat here as that man was incredible rude and condescending) to eat and guess what, nothing about my water bottle? Truly now I'm just curious if they've had multiple health violations that they're so strict on it and if a health inspector comes they can't risk having an issue? Not sure. To the man: there's a way to talk to people, there's a way to have customer service and instead of having a berating tone and not even asking what I want to drink, is not how you keep customers. There's a way to kindly inform/educate people in a non condescending rude tone also there was no need for you to raise your voice. Alas, my first time here. Last time here. Horrible first impression and waste of my time. Happy to not have given my money to this place, and went a few min down the street where I didn't feel scolded for bringing a water bottle to stay hydrated in this heat :) read more

Had a wonderful evening at Cruzteca this evening. Visiting Austin for a week and wanted Tex-Mex. Food was excellent and fresh. We happened to be there for live music. Im sorry. But the food was amazing and tony who is one of the owners is a great human being. But, the bartender who is latinX/ hispanic (woman) with braces is one of the worst service industry workers ive ever experienced. At one point i had to ask another patron for a menu because she didnt ever provide one. And ask tony for an item- he had to direct her to put it in. I had to beg to order. The bar was a mess. She didnt pick up any used dishes glasses or napkins. I waited patiently forever and asked multiple times for any request i put in. She catered to her friends. She disappeared for 20 minutes. She must be his niece or something because she is bad for business. It sucks because the food is amazing but she shouldnt be working there. Tony get rid of her. Imagine her when you aren't there. It wasnt even busy when i got there. I would give it 1 star if i didnt feel empathy for tony. Love ya tony! She's completely taking advantage of how good the establishment is to be a D- - fail level server. What a free loading lazy employee. read more

If you're looking for something different from the usual Tex-Mex, try Cruzteca. There's nothing wrong with the usual - it's comfort food. But sometimes you just need a culinary adventure. We had the Nutella mole chicken enchiladas and the salsa verde shrimp enchiladas. Both were excellent. I don't even like salsa verde but kept sneaking bites. Great find. We will be back. The food is pretty good, but a bit over-priced. Our biggest frustration was that you had to order two tacos at a time, and they had to be the same taco. Also, there were tables outside with no customers, yet we were told to wait outside for an outside table. We sat at one of the tables to wait, and then we're told to move to a different table to be served. Between the price and the rules, we won't be returning. read more

I visited with a friend for lunch on Tuesday this week. At 11am they didn't have any tortilla chips so I couldn't have chips and salsa (or really chips and anything...) but the server did recommend the esquites (street corn but not on the cob) and it was really good. My friend had been there before and knew to get the fried avocado tacos, I got one too and a fish taco and both were really good! Try that avocado taco for sure! We both got fountain drinks but they did have a full bar. The place was pretty empty that early on a weekday but it looks like they have plenty of seating for when it's busy, and some outside tables with umbrellas too. Plenty of free parking out front. This would be a good first date spot or to meet with friends and eat a bunch of tacos. I'll definitely be back! read more

Flavors are very mixed their beans Are very different, if you ever want to know what potpourri taste like then eat these ranchero beans. My husband ordered beef fajita nachos and the retried beans on here were really yummy with the exception of the yellow cheese it taste like the really cheap sliced processed cheese you buy for sandwiches. I ordered The casa enchiladas and it tasted like they threw a can of diced tomatoes and called it ranchero sauce with the same gross cheese. The plate was steaming hot which usually is a good thing but it was so hot it was still cooking the enchiladas so when I cut into them the corn tortilla was all mush. This dish all together was extremely terrible and definitely got sent back. Their version of loaded fries was pretty awesome, their Bloody Mary's best I have had. This place was going really well until the waiter got butt hurt when I sent back the dish. He offered another meal but was ready to go. When we got our tab they still charged me for the enchiladas because he said I ate half, I got 3 bites and one of those bites gave to my husband. However I did not want to argue. I am huge with customer service and this was horrible service. He offered me another meal to replace the one I sent back so what was he going to do charge me for both?.... This is why it gets 2 stars some food was okay and others extremely terrible and to top it off service definitely went south. I don't recommend this place unless you go in for loaded fries and Bloody Mary's. read more

I loved the Melizoz Taco truck and have raved about them for years. They closed he truck because kf covid, so I thought I'd try the restaurant. The price of their tacos have gone up and now you get 2 for $10, according to their menu, but when my bill came, it was $13 just for tacos. Even if they are as wonderful as they were in the truck, no tacos are worth $6.50 each in Texas. On their menu, for $12.75 you get 2 tacos and beans and rice. Super disappointed. read more

Being of Mexican descent, and having lived in San Antonio for the last 11 years, I can honestly say I'm beyond thrilled to have found Cruzteca. It's become a weekly treat for our family after moving to Dripping Springs. If you like yummy flautas, excellent green salsa with the perfect amount of heat and flavor, and a casual environment with prompt and attentive service, you've got to try this place. For anyone who is confused, this restaurant is the same as Melizoz Tacos, the food truck that used to be on 1st St. The fried avocado taco here is the best taco I've ever had. I've been following this place for over 10 years now, and when my friend and I told the waiter this, he was so kind and relived the history of the place with us. Honestly, this was just a great experience. There was outdoor seating, and mimosas, salsa, and tacos were absolutely amazing. In fact, because the tacos come with two tortillas, the contents are enough to make two tacos out of! I honestly find this place to be a staple of Austin, and a must-go-to. My company had this catered so at least I got to try it without reaching into my pocket . The beef taco , picadillo was very mediocre. The chicken was decent with the spicy red sauce . Butttt the loaded queso was definitely the best part of the meal, which is never a good thing.. the esquites, or Mexican corn was not at all Mexican style corn...it was weird. The flautas, rice, and beans were just ok. Chips, salsa, and tortillas not included with your meal. Veryyyy over priced ($8 queso plus $2 for salsa whatttt?!)
