me & the stegosaurus hole in minigolf!
    Ember D.

my bf & I came here for our anniversary as a little weekend trip. we stayed in menominee & drove to spring valley for our tour & mini golf. -the tour was phenomenal, I am such a geek for a cool earthy experience like this! the guide was really good & ensured a great time for everyone! -the staff were all so sweet, we got rained out for our mini golf... came back later in the day but they were skeptical as it was sprinkling & lightning could be a factor to interrupt us so we came back the day after. They gave us free prospectors creek tickets for coming back. -I would recommend to everyone, kids would love this(maybe age 5 and up as there are steps in the cave!) the mini golf is for everyone which btw is very well maintained & I loved the Jurassic park music vibe.

The signs for Cystal Cave caught my eye when driving back and forth between Milwaukee and Minneapolis. Decided to check it out last time and am glad I did! It's kind of in the middle of nowhere but worth traveling off the beaten path for. It's a cool tour that shares an interesting history of the cave and fun cave facts like what cave kisses are muah muah! My favorite part of the tour was when they turned off all of the lights and you get to experience complete and total darkness which actually feels pretty trippy. Owning up to the Crystal cave name, they show some neat phosphorescent crystals at the end in the Wish room. The also have a gift shop above the cave with all sorts of crystals, minerals and jewelry you can buy. Go see what's all the rave at Cyrstal Cave!

It was ok ... the name is a bit misleading .. was expecting lots of pretty crystals or something sparkling. It was similar to a cave we went to in Pennsylvania. there are lots of stairs but we had not trouble and though there is some moist gravels .. it wasn't slippery with good hiking shoes. We were traveling from Dayton to Minneapolis and stopped here on the way back. the guide was very nice and we felt very safe. he went on and on about the geology ... personally I would have preferred less talking and to see more. But I'd wanted to check it out and you don't know till ya go. there were some kids on our tour and they seemed bored with the long "educational talks" .. I know I was. But saw a few bats and was worth a peak. we went in early fall and it was super cold in the cave. some people had gloves and coats ... we wish we had.

Fun and very interesting! Our tour guide was very funny and bubbly, Zoe was her name. Learned lots about the history of the cave and how it was discovered. My favorite parts was experiencing total darkness when she turned off all the lights for a couple minutes. Kids loved it, adults too! Bring a light jacket if you get cold easy, and comfortable shoes as there are lots of stairs and it's a little wet and muddy down there. After all, you are 7 stories underground!

It is a wonderful place to tour. The guides are nice and knowledgable. It's a great way to spend your day.

They do a great job with the tour. If you are claustrophobic this tour is for you. Very open. If you are in the area take the tour.

The Chippewa Valley Railroad operates on a loop in Carson Park, across the street from the historic…read morebaseball stadium. Appropriate for kids of all ages, especially those of us with grey hair that remember the real thing, the railroad operates passenger trains pulled by live steam or "diesel" power. The diesel, actually a model of GM's famous F series locomotives, runs on a Wisconsin internal combustion engine. It was built by the Miniature Train Company sometime between 1948 and 1956. It is one of at least 5 such trains operating in Wisconsin. (Fond du Lac, Oshkosh, Green Bay, Wausau and here.) Chippewa Valley Railroad goes the typical MTC railroad one better with live steam. You can ride the MTC train or a live steam train. The loop is about a half mile and takes you along the bluff above the Chippewa River, past a picnic shelter, over the road that takes you to the depot, past a silent observer (keep your eyes peeled!) before returning to the station. When your train arrives, the next one departs. The trains were obviously built for little people but there is an open-air gondola that's a little more comfortable for larger folks. It's pulled behind the steam engine. Rides are reasonably priced, considering ticket sales are the only source of income for this rolling museum. It is manned by volunteers who love railroads, and you can tell when you speak with any of the staff. The Chippewa Valley Railroad only operates during the summer and only on Sundays and July 4. You might think it's only for kids. In that case, borrow a couple of kids from the neighbors and go ride the train.

Swim meet review:…read more The actual pool is lovely! If you park when you drop your swimmer off, you might get a spot that's not a hike. I dont mind walking, but swim meets often happen in winter and it's cold and windy here, and space inside is very limited. If you're here for a big meet, there will not be enough space in the stands or the gym. The home team might not have enough people to be timers and will ask for volunteers. The bathrooms are old, and the swimmers say the locker rooms are also meh. The gym is also very small and unless you grab a spot right away, there will be nowhere for you to sit, not even on the floor.

Some people were told to park in a lot that was a 15 minute walk away. - construction mess was going on while we were there - overall, the event seemed pretty disorganized. - they ran out of wristbands on day 1 - very limited concessions - very limited seating in the gym to view swimming heats via video (for people who couldn't/wouldn't use seating in the pool area; the seating in the pool area was tight, and for this event, was inadequate) - simply LOVED (not) the woman sitting immediately behind me screaming in my ear. Next time I'll remember ear plugs. - no event t-shirts day one; T-shirts not available to purchase right away starting on day 2, and, up a flight of stairs of course. Moved downstairs starting on day 3. Limited size selection being sold. - quite a few stairs to climb for access to pool seating area - rules not enforced (many times people got away with standing at railing blocking view of pool contestants, even though the railing was marked "no standing"). People perpetually went down the up stairs and up the down stairs. - during several heats you couldn't see the contestant in lane # 1 from the stands, due to the line of people standing at the pool edge down below. - narrow/tight seating (packed in like sardines). I've never been bumped and knee'd in my back so many times as I was at this venue. - no handicap access to seating area that I could see. - loud speaker announcements hard to understand/make out - helpful friendly personnel ("Tom" in particular) - EXTREMELY LONG line to get in on day 1 - nice pool - Rochester itself was a good city to hold the event in (easy to get around in, lots of restaurants to choose from, everything a short drive away, nice hotels, friendly people) - I appreciated the National Anthem at the start of day one, and at the start of day 2's late afternoon relays. I may have missed any others there might have been. - overall, I think the Rochester Recreation Center could have been better prepared for the event, and in my opinion, was overwhelmed by the number of people attending.
