I was in the mood for a moderate hike that…read moreshowed off all the Aspen foliage as we put September behind us and this trail was everything I set out for it to be and more. Once you make that left from US-64 you have about a 3 mile drive up a dirt road and from there you will see the parking lot to the right. The trailhead is easily marked making it almost impossible to miss (#664). The parking lot is fairly small and heavily trafficked so I'd recommend arriving earlier the better. 5 miles down and back. The first mile is mainly switchbacks but smoothes out the remainder of the hike. The aspens showed off their vibrant yellow colors which made the hike that much more enjoyable. The weather can change drastically especially when you make it to the top. It was raining and pretty windy when i got up there so a jacket is highly recommended. As well as good hiking boots as you experience different types of terrain, particularly at the top where it's mainly rocks. There are bathrooms at the trailhead parking lot which is extremely convenient. Especially for my hour drive trek back home to Colorado Springs. Give this hike a go!

This campground truly is one of the cleanest and well-maintained campgrounds I have ever been to…read more The bathrooms were cleaned once or twice a day(didn't smell!) and the sites were very well maintained. We loved that there was a short little walk to Manitou Lake from the sites(sites in the 40 loop area) and it was absolutely gorgeous. Summers in Colorado come with afternoon rain so be prepared! Bring plenty of tarps and arrive early so you're not setting up in the rain. Tree coverage is pretty good at the sites here but I will say the nearby Spring Meadow campground is a bit denser in terms of trees and provides more shade and protection from the elements(slightly smaller sites though!). The campground is located next to a farm which was quite the surprise. You could hear the cows in the middle of the night so you might want to bring earplugs if you're a light sleeper. My niece loved the cows and overall, it was definitely a great place for kids. Plus, Woodland Park is less than 15 minutes away which was nice if you happen to forget anything. Would definitely come back for the bathrooms alone. Huge shout out to the camp hosts for maintaining the grounds so well. 4 stars only because we had to battle with a lot of ant hills on our sites and the cows kept me up the first night (all things that come with being outdoors) Some sites that I wrote down were 15, 19, the one across from 24. The 40 loop sites are big but high traffic because of the trail to the lake. We stayed at site 24 and it was large enough for three pop up tents, one 15 person tent, one 4 person tent, one 6 person tent, AND a badminton net.

Colorado Campground is a very FAMILY FRIENDLY place to camp. Despite its generic name (don't Google…read more"Colorado Campground" and expect to get specific results), this place is one of the better campsites I've seen. It's within a 1.5 hour drive of Denver, too! High Points: The Short Drive. Like I said, this is a family friendly place, and you don't want to stuff your wee bairn into a car for four hours just to get out of the city and See All The Nature. Kids and long car trips do not mix. The Trees! Beetle kill hasn't hit this part of the state yet, and most of the sites here are graced with at least partial shade. Lodgepole Pines (I think) cover the entire campground. It's awesome. The Little Fishing Lake. A short trail walk off site will land you on the shores of Manitou Lake. Apparently it's stocked with trout. If you didn't bring live bait, you can drive about 7 miles back down the hill to the Loaf n' Jug in Woodland Park. "D'ya want 18 babies or 12 Night Crawlers?" Bike Trails. You can ride a smooth paved one all the way back down to Woodland Park and beyond, if you so choose. There are also several singletracks leading out of the campsite as well. Not-Really-Low, But Things-You-Should-Know Points: Generators Are Allowed. Some of those suckers are noisy, too. It's kind of hard to Enjoy All The Nature when somebody's stupid genny is running full tilt a mere couple yards away. Annoying. No Cooking Grates on the Fire Pits. There's a metal fire ring at every site, but instead of the usual grate you can flip over the top, there's a big metal slab. So, if you're planning to grill right over your campfire, you'd do well to bring one from home. Yes, you can fry on it... like a skillet (and we were able to even boil a big pot of water on that slab), but if you're wanting open-air, open-fire grilling, you're out of luck. Kids, Kids, and more Kids. We brought the shawties, so this was just fine by us! But if you're looking to rage an all-night kegger, you might want to pick another campground. I'm all for raging all-night keggers when the time is right, but this isn't the place for it. I'd say at least 80% of the campsites here were occupied by families with small children. No Swimming. The aforementioned little lake is for fishing and non-motorized boating only. No body contact allowed... And Remember When I Said That Lake Was Stocked With Trout..?? We didn't catch any. Neither did anybody else (we asked). HOWEVER, if you like crawdads, you can catch yourself a bountiful meal. We pulled a crawfish on every catch. Bring your own Old Bay Seasoning. That about covers it! $20/night will get you a nice little break amid All The Nature. OH, one more thing. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO RESERVE A CAMPSITE HERE ON RESERVEAMERICA.COM. If you go there, it will tell you that you that this is a walkup-only campground--- no reservations allowed. This isn't true. The Camp Host explained to us that ReserveAmerica sucks, and we should never use it, as all the National Park campgrounds have 80% reservable sites, with the remaining 20% left for first-come-first-serve walkups. Lesson learned. Go to Recreation.gov instead.

That said, I've…read moreveered off the trail and stopped at the camp located 6.5 miles up Barr Trail several times, but never had the gumption to overnight. Regardless, it gets five stars for being the rare trail outpost staffed for lodging purposes and a welcome waypoint for the mountain weary. It should probably get another five stars for being open year-round and through the deep snow months. Folks on the 25-mile trek appreciate all that it is.

It's hard to review a plain rest stop operated by the state, but here is what I liked and didn't…read morelike about this stop. We pulled off to see if there was a good view of the valley below from the gazebo. Reality is, it's a bit hindered by the hill and vegetation below, so the pull off down the hill is still the best spot for photo ops (see photo). We did get to use the restrooms...they were very stinky! Yes, it is August, and yes they are essentially brick and mortar porta-potties...however, they were obviously not freshly cleaned. Floor was not mopped, no attempt was made to freshen them up for travellers. I would have let it go, was it not for the fact that 2 rangers were sitting around in the gift shop with little to nothing do. So my question is: if you have TWO employees not currently engaged in other activities, what's stopping one of them from grabbing a mop bucket, tossing some PineSol in it and freshening up the restroom? Food for thought... They do have feeders right by the gift shop windows where you can enjoy hummingbirds up-close and personal :) That was a nice perk! They also have several plaques explaining the history as well as the fauna of the area. They also have trails leaving directly the parking lot that seem interesting to scout in the future.

They answered the phone, were polite, and very helpful. Showed up Monday morning, they were polite, funny , helpful. They had all the stuff we needed to keep safe and dry. The special ATV style sunglasses helped keep dirt out of our eyes. The gloves and ponchos were nice to keep us warm in the morning. That had a huge selection of full face helmets. They even recommended that we take only one atv, saving us money and still having a great trip. Their shop is full of atvs, you could take all your buddies no problem. Dave and Dave were pleasant and guided a great trip through the hills. We spent 5 hours with Dave and had a great time. The ATV worked great. No issues there. The scenery was nice, and he checked on us often to make sure we're were safe,rested, and informed. We had a BLAST. Not sure why the other bad review, these gentlemen were just right for a motorized romp on the trails. Thanks Dave and Dave.

Rockhound ATV was some-what disapointing. Leading up the trip, communication with them was bit…read moredifficult as they were not reliable/quick in replying to emails or answering phone calls, but everything did eventually work out with the reservation. Additonally, when I did speak with them on the phone, they were very aggressive/mean about my questions, they implied that I was rediculous to be asking about riding longer than 4hrs and i quote: "now you listen to me, I'll ride your assess off, dont worry about that". I didn't really know how to respond to their gruff/aggresive tone over the phone, but I was still willing to go with the reservation. Then came the day of the rides. Overall, we had a great time, but this was almost "in-spite" of Rockhound. The best parts of the day riding were the views and terrian, riding in Pike's Nat'l forest is breath-taking! With regards to our guide, he was VERY VERY slow and when we asked about riding faster on the straight/flat sections, he yelled at us "no going over 20mph!". We didnt ask about riding more aggressively after that, but it was almost painful to be stuck riding behind our guide. All of us knew what we were doing, and within 1hr he should have been able to sense our comfort-levels and ability, and allowed us to ride faster. I felt like we were on a calm sight-seeing trip, not a fun/thrilling ATV ride. Now, I understand that Rockhound could have incentive to make us go slow the entire time, as the machines could be broken or we could get hurt. But here is why that its a not a good arguement, upon arrival, we had to sign waiver forms stating any injuries we sustained would not be Rockhound's fault. Additonally, we had to give them a $650 (!!!) deposit for any possible damage to the ATVs. This is what really upsets me, i signed a form saying I would have to pay for parts and labor to any damage i created, and i would have to take responsibility for any injuries i sustained...so...I SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO RIDE HOWEVER I WANT! The most upsetting part of the whole thing was how mis-leading it was. Leading up the trip, the owner, ATV Dave was telling me over the phone "dont worry about it, we will ride your assess off", when i called with the original plan to rent the ATVs for 8hrs, with no guide and ride on our own...so i listened to him, and changed our plans to the 4hr guided-tour, and then when we go there, they made us ride slow, they scolded us for "sling-shotting" to try and make it fun and just overall didnt live up the promise of a fun/thrilling ride. I wish I hadn't listend to them and just stuck with my instinct on renting the ATVs to ride on our own. Even if you arent familiar with the area, if you got a map and went to Pike's Natl forest on your own, you'd have a lot lot more fun.

My wife and I embarked on an 11-day Colorado bucket list vacation to celebrate our 30th…read moreanniversary. We visited all the iconic stops: Boulder, Estes Park, Breckenridge, Vail, Ouray, Telluride, Silverton, and then headed back towards Denver. Wanting to try something different on the way, we decided to go glamping. Little did we know, Black Tree would become our favorite stop along the journey. We were greeted with a warm reception and guided to our luxury tent, which was thoughtfully designed and equipped with detailed instructions on its amenities. The experience only got better when dinner arrived--by far the best food we had during all our stays. The salmon was absolutely delicious, and the other three meals each day did not disappoint, topped off with a surprise cake that was a sweet end to the day. That night, we gathered around the campfire under a sky full of stars, and just as we wished, a breathtaking shooting star streaked across the sky. Luxurious bedding ensured a sound night's sleep, wrapped in comfort and tranquility. This was truly a highlight of our adventure. We even decided to extend our stay, cancelling our last planned stop. A special thanks to Nabil and his exemplary staff--your hospitality made this experience unforgettable. This is what Colorado is all about!
