A colleague and I went for lunch here and it was just the perfect lovely day - the sun was out, it wasn't too hot and we got window seats. I had the Penne Romana (regular size for £7.50) and it was a generous, delicious portion. The pasta was al dente (just the way I like it), the sauce was OH so rich with a touch of cream (as promised), the chicken bits (and sausage bits?) were juicy and the cheese toppers tasted smoky and fragrant - it truly completed the dish. So amazing. My colleague had two lunch starters - the Portobello Mushroom w/ spinach and gorgonzola (£3) and the fried calzone with mozzarella, spinach and ricotta (£3.25). Both were good, however the calzone was a bit bland. The breading for the calzone reminded me of a Chinese doughnut - slightly chewy and smelled buttery (yum). Service was quick and very pleasant. This place was about a block from my work so that's quite dangerous. I'm gonna tell you right now, this restaurant will get me fat.

We selected goats cheese tartlet and stuffed sardines. Unfortunately we were a little disappointed with the starters. The goats cheese tartlet turned out to be a breaded deep fried goats cheese slice on top of layer of soggy uncooked puff pasty with cooked shallot underneath. The special happened to be deep fried goats cheese, so we felt like out option was actually just that rather than an actual tartlet. The sardines were okay, but not what I'd imagined. My main was delicious. A large portion of lamb shoulder, beautiful cooked, it fell off the bone. Accompanied by a lovely Aubergine dish with olives and pine nuts. The red wine jus was overly strong though. My dates main wasn't quite as good. He had roasted pork belly and gratin potatoes. It was was a large portion of meat but a bit dry and a lot of fat. Also we both felt that the waiter should have asked if he wanted any vegetables on the side. It seemed strange for a meat and potato dish not to automatically come with any vegetables. We selected a lovely bottle of Sicilian red wine, which was delicious and decently priced too. We weren't offered any water though, which was a shame as it's nice when it's assumed you'd like some water with your meal as well as wine. £80 in total for two cocktails, starters, mains and a lovely bottle of wine. Our waitress happily took our order of some tap water before we even got down to ordering our drinks (a bottle of wine in the end) and was just very attentive (not overly so), happy and polite, just exactly how you'd wish all wait staff would be! Now on to the food... I got the cauliflower truffle soup as an appetizer. It was delicious and although I'd call it a veloute more than a soup, there was no disappointment for my tummy. My partner got a chicken liver and fois gras dish with some pineapple mixture kind of like a coulis. And the tastes matched surprisingly wonderfully. For my main course I had the onglet steak which was cooked as asked (yay!) and was delicious, my partner had the pheasant and although he said it wasn't an item he'd get often (who does want pheasant anyway) it was still cooked well and a unique change. That is not the case however, when it comes to my positive reviews. I try to state exactly what my experience was without exaggeration. Let the experience speak for itself. So, when I tell you that the lunch I had at Cibo on the afternoon of October 1, 2014 was one of the best meals I've had in my entire life, and the sautéed mushrooms, one of the single best dishes I've ever had under any circumstances ever, you should take note. Not surprisingly, I have Yelp to thank for helping me find the restaurant. I was in the Olympia/Kennsington area of London to attend a tradeshow at the Olympia London exhibition hall. Tired of forgettable food from the expo hall cafeteria I decided to venture out of the hall in hopes of finding a decent bite. My co-worker and I debated what sort of food we might be in the mood for and settled on Italian. From there, Yelp directed us to Cibo which was only .2 miles away. As it turns out, that must have been .2 miles as the birds fly because the walk took a good 15 minutes. Oh, but it was so worth it! When we reached the restaurant there was only one other table occupied. By the time we left, I think there was only one table that wasn't occupied. The restaurant itself is charming and intimate. We were seated by the manager and given lunch menus which offered a two course meal for £19.95--admittedly on the pricey side--but this is London and Cibo is clearly a cut above other restaurants in the area--or all of London for that matter. For the two courses you can choose between Antipasti, Carne or Desert. For my Antipasti I chose the previously mentioned sautéed wild mushrooms and for the Carne, lamb. My co-worker also ordered the lamb, but started with the ravioli. While we waited we had a nice assortment of breads to snack on. The Antipasti were brought out quickly and even just looking at the dish I knew it was going to be something special. Unfortunately the picture I took doesn't really do the dish justice (how can it possibly when I'm describing it as one of the best things I've ever eaten in my life?) I'm not even sure that I'm a capable enough writer to describe what made the dish so extraordinary. Taste is a qualitative sense. Culinary beauty is in the eye of the beholder, after all. The selection of fungi. The exquisite cheese. The potatoes. The spices. Perfection really. The lamb was also extraordinary and if served on its own I would absolutely be raving about the tenderness of the meat, the understated seasoning, the side dishes, spinach and potatoes, and the presentation. Suffice it to say that when I was done, the only thing left on the plate were the lamb bones which I had picked up with my hands (so uncoooth!) in an effort to get to every last bit of meat. Much to our surprise, as we prepared to pay and return to our show, we were presented with a plate of mini-deserts, each of which was also spectacular. A very, very special meal. In all my years of traveling for work, from one end of the earth to the other, only one other meal has compared to this. There is a wide selection of antipasti to choose and share and a lot of pizza, pasta and salad options that catered to both meat lover like myself and vegetarians amongst us. But service was excellent with 3 to 4 servers circling around our table so hardly had to do any waiting. The atmosphere has that colonial style look to it so you definitely want to dress a bit more formal than you would if you were going to a um...McDonald? After ordering a few Antipastos for everyone to share, which were all pretty tasty, and knocking down a few bottles of wine, it was time to select our Secondo (aside from the risotto, pasta). They brought out the fresh catches of the day on a silver platter, live lobsters, Scottish langoustines (big shrimps), etc. I decided to go with the Scottish langoustines and it was the best choice! The taste was like a hybrid of a sweet succulent buttery shrimp, and a hearty Maine lobster meat, grilled to perfection on top an open fire so it had a hint of that smokiness to it. Overall, my compliments to the owner, who evidently knows my friends and set us up with a really nice group table and special meal, and to the chef who did a very nice job. I will be returning once again.
