Very nice bed and breakfast. Great location on Main Street in downtown Elizabeth City. It is in easy walking distance to shops, waterfront parks, restaurants and bars. There are no hotels in the historic downtown area of Elizabeth City which is why we choice the B&B route (didn't want to drive). We did not stay in the main house but in the adjacent building. It turned out good for us. The building is nice, more private and the rooms have a private bathroom. You get access to the main house as well as the tavern. The tavern is very cool. Nice bar, seating area and a TV. You have to bring your own booze since they don't have a liquor license. Plenty of parking at the house for guest, all complimentary. You also get access to the pool in the back but it was not open when we were there (winter). The owners Mike and Holly were great and provided excellent information and recommendations on Elizabeth City. read more

The Culpepper Inn is super cute and my husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the Poolside Room. Upon arrival, the self check-in was so easy and we were greeted by a personalized welcome package just inside the community Tavern Room. The Poolside Room is beautifully decorated and the attention to cleanliness and detail was evident. Shortly after we got settled, we had the opportunity to meet Mike, who was so friendly (and Bruno!). At our hosts' recommendation, we enjoyed a quick, scenic walk to the waterfront for dinner. After settling back in at the Inn, my husband and I had a great time enjoying the hospitality and fellowship with both Mike and Holly by their beautiful pool. Check-out was just as easy after enjoying the breakfast goodies provided for us in the Tavern Room. Having made some new friends, I have no doubt that we'll be back to visit The Culpepper in the future. Thank you so much! read more

I really wanted to like this place because the old couple are maintaining "history" by keeping up this house while of course profiting extremely in the process. I left a good review on Airbnb due to this fact alone. Here is the actual review: The bathtub was from the 80's, olive drab green, dark, and crusty as if 409 was just sprayed on and left. Soaps and other toiletries are seriously lacking. Most doors don't lock or close easy if even at all. I paid through Airbnb which had the tag on it as "near the beach". This is 100% false. Over an hour to a decent beach with tolls and more if you decide to go on a busy weekend. Through Airbnb I reserved the only room that appeared available and it wasn't in the main inn. Could care less. Well they seem to have over booked or double booked my room because they "upgraded" us to the main inn yet denied us breakfast with all the other main inn guests leaving us to feel like we were kind of in the way. I even asked if I could pay for breakfast so my lady could eat before the long drive to the beach and was told "no that's legal". Not even kidding. The free breakfast is all costco bulk items or the cook is just terrible. Everything was dry and cold. The yogurt in the fridge is literally a spoon full. You get one spoon of yoplait. The fruit cup is dried and looks as though it was on the last few days of its lifespan. 2/3 coffee pots work and both the working ones were empty by 8:15. We were very careful in the room as it reminded us both of our grandmas and you know what grandma does if you mess up her stuff. Yet she left a review on my Airbnb complaining because 1. We didn't utilize coasters....trust me, the 2 available were used even though they were warm beach beers since the mention room fridge isn't actually in existence. Then I got a complaint because i left 3 unopened Coronas for the husband of the old couple running the place. Thought he would enjoy free beer and I didn't want to drive with it. Well I got literally shamed for thinking that way. She also claimed we ripped her 20 year old, Walmart branded mattress protector that was under the sheets that weren't damaged at all. Seriously, just spend $10 every 20 years and get a fresh one. I think that is long enough but there is more.....oh if you want to sit in the bench outside you need to weigh less that 115lbs because it sinks into the ground and slams your head on the dirt if you try to use it. My lady was not happy about that either. P.S. they are not electric car friendly AT ALL. I asked to use a normal outlet overnight to charge my electric only Tesla so I wouldn't get stranded (no super chargers in Elizabeth city) and was talked down to and critiqued for asking. Average cost of charging a Tesla model 3 for one night.....1.33 cents if charged to full. I do 80% so less that a dollar. She "Holly" wasn't having it at all. read more

When I booked this I felt like I was taking a bit of a gamble since it was for my wedding night but it was a hit with both me and the wife! The innkeepers were welcoming and even had a little sign congratulating us on the door to our room. We stayed in the carriage house. The seclusion was perfect for our wedding night and the furnishing were cozy and comfortable. The shower was especially nice! The breakfast was quite good, it was sausage, French toast, a cinnamon infused pear, some OJ and some orange crumb cake. All in all it was a great experience and I definitely anticipate coming back here in a year or two. Watch out for the cat- it likes to follow you up the stairs and made for quite an adventure in our case! read more

Be careful if you make a reservation in advance! We booked a reservation a month ahead, then Hurricane Matthew hit. Under no circumstance could I cancel with a refund. In fact - my card was charged when we originally booked. The owner said we should have purchased the protection insurance, she offered us an extension to stay but would not allow anyone else to stay in our place. We ended up eating the $170 reservation, with absolutely no mercy from the owner given that a hurricane had hit the area! read more

My wife and I found ourselves in Elizabeth City on a Friday evening during a trip from Philadelphia to Calabash, NC and decided to break up our trip into two segments. We initially stopped at the Hampton Inn to learn there were no open rooms, then we tried the Fairfield Inn but were informed we would need to book 2 nights in order to stay. In order to keep from getting discouraged, we stopped in a local pub & restaurant and reviewed the AAA Tourbook. After calling around, the only vacancy we could find was the Culpepper Inn. I have never been to a bed & breakfast before and had a preconceived notion of sleeping in a guest bedroom in someone's house and being forced to chit-chat with strangers in common rooms. I am now happy to say my notions were VERY wrong. We found the property in the historic district of Elizabeth City which was a short distance from the chain restaurants and hotel area you see when you enter town from route 17. The architecture of the brick mansion was dramatically lit from below to show off the fine details. We walked in the front door into the spacious foyer and were immediately hit with the inviting aroma of freshly baking cinnamon muffins. How can you not feel at home with a welcome like that? We met the owners and were shown to our room (the Lavender Room) with its queen 4-post bed (it is accurately pictured in the listing), big cedar closet with robes, wifi connection, large bathroom with 1930s era tiling, etc. This room made the idea of staying in a regular hotel seem utterly foolish. I am SO glad the other places were unavailable. Our host asked if we would prefer the 8 or 9:am breakfast seating and if we had any dietary restrictions before we were left on our own for the evening. The climate control was not something we had access to, but the temperature was kept at a perfect level which made our stay completely enjoyable. The bed was unbelievably comfortable, and the night's sleep couldn't have been better. The morning brought breakfast being served in the solarium with a view of the pool and grounds. The meal was served on time but we showed up 10 minutes late and found most of the tables to be taken. Of the remaining 4 seats available, my wife and I joined another couple traveling from their vacation back north to Syracuse, NY and had a lovely conversation with them over the 40 minutes or so of breakfast. Instead of feeling forced into small talk, it was genuinely nice to sit with someone, talk a bit, and enjoy the breakfast of sweet warm cinnamon apples with milk, spinach quiche, sausage, and cinnamon muffin. I can't say enough good things about this place and if you're a couple traveling through the area, it would be better to stop here and take in the friendly and inviting atmosphere rather than subject yourself to an impersonal hotel that caters to the masses. Another great stay with Holly, Mike and Nikki. New Year's Eve day we arrived early, around 230 p.m. and were greeted outside. Holly's parents were there as a surprise for her one year wedding anniversary. They were holding a wedding at 500 p.m. in the main house. We attended the New Year's Eve celebration at The Pines as their guests. Conversation was delightful and entertaining. We stayed in the Crown Room and it was still decorated in Christmas decor. Very clean, warm and inviting with great views of the backyard. We met Richard Childress in the tavern for a taste of one of his delicious wines. He was a guest at the inn while on a hunting trip. Breakfast in the morning was continental in the tavern--delicious homemade pastries and scalloped potatoes with ham with an assortment of fruit. After a day at the outer banks (only 60 minutes away) we relaxed in the tavern with our bottle of wine and watched television. Breakfast the next day was homemade quiche, grits, pastry, fresh fruit, and local bacon. Local artists' works are displayed on every wall. We purchased another Hunter Michael painting. My daughter and I stayed here for the first time this summer for a short vacation and we loved it. The hosts are amazing and the place is beautiful. I've been to Elizabeth City many times with my job and had always stayed at a hotel. After finding this lovely B&B, I won't be staying at a hotel again. I've actually got two of my co-workers along this time and they are impressed as well. This time I am in the French Room and it is simply gorgeous and so comfortable. It's quiet and spacious and just so beautifully decorated. The entire Inn is decorated beautifully and my co-workers and I were able to meet in the Tavern room today with no problems at all. The salt water pool is so clear and there are so many places to sit and chat or even read a book. The Inn is conveniently located as well. Walk six blocks and you are at the harbor where the restaurants have some very good choices. Most of all, the hosts make you feel like friends if not family! I will be back! read more

Quiet street, great to take a walk in the neighborhood or walk down to town and see the water. Innkeepers are very hospitable. Many places on the property to relax and enjoy. Great for every member of our family. Stairs to upstair are steep, my 88 year old mom managed, but next time I will book her a room ground level. The breakfast was exquisite...french toast with a flair. Had one of us that is gluten-intolerant and with notice the innkeeper had a gluten-free breakfast available! Wifi made it so the teenagers and my husband happy, he had work to do. We hope to visit the Culpepper Inn again!!!! read more

Although I initially had a very good impression of the place, I was very disappointed with the place and would NOT recommend the place to anyone, especially with children. After my husband had checked in the early afternoon, we were given a tour of the place and welcomed to use the facilities. Although small, the bedroom (The Balcony) was quaint. When my husband had to take care of some work-related business during the early evening, my 10 month son and I decided to check out the living room in the main house, especially since the bedroom was so small (could barely walk around the bed). We had been in the living room for less than 5 minutes, when one of the presumed workers reprimanded me for having my baby in there and told me that children are not supposed to be in the main house. At no time during the tour had it been mentioned that children should not be in the main house. So, slightly embarrassed, I returned to my room, thinking maybe it was on the piece of paper that we had been given when we checked in. When I check on paper, no where was it mentioned that children were NOT supposed to be in the main house. Therefore, unless you like being reprimanded after you paying for accommodations, I would NOT recommend Culpepper Inn Bed and Breakfast in Elizabeth City. read more
