From Cumberland Dermatology: "...we will not be able to provide the needs you are requesting. We do not prescribe pain medication here in our office. I understand that you have some medical conditions that may require this..." Note: They found some pre-skincancer sites that need addressing, but their dismissive, gaslighting, uncooperative and knee-jerk disregard of someone with special needs violates their Hippocratic Oath (like "...shall be for the convenience and advantage of the patient...") and thus marginalizes me. The alternative they leave me with is to be without any local help to address my serious health need. ...never had this kind of treatment when I lived where I'm from in Georgia ~ should've never left for Tennessee I guess :-( read more

I switched care to Cumblerland Dermatology and tried out their new office in Cookeville after going to another Dermatologist for over 2 years with no signs of improvement for my acne. I don't have super severe acne, but very stubborn acne that nothing seems to help. I decided to try this place and have been very impressed with my experience until recently. I started off seeing Scott Stout, who I liked very much. He was super friendly and was encouraging when he saw that I was getting disheartened or frustrated with the process. After trying many of the same things I had tried at my previous dermatologist in different amounts and combinations and still having none of them work, he suggested that I research Accutane (Isotretinoin) as my last resort. I had heard of this medicine before and how well it works and looking up reviews and more details about it just confirmed to me that it might actually help get rid of my acne once and for all (has like an 80% or something success rate). However, this is where my experience goes bad with this business and the reason for a 3 instead of 5 star review. They only have one person on their staff that can prescribe accutane as you have to get specially certified to do so. So when I decided I wanted to try it, the office set me up with Justin Bell and booked me a consultation. During this first office visit, he provided me with all the usual information and asked what research I had done and if I knew all the risks and how serious this medication was to which I replied with yes to all. He even stated that he usually is pretty stern on who he decides to prescribe the medication to but that I seemed like I was pretty responsible and would take it seriously (I agree). He went ahead and told me what all I would need to do to get started and even booked my follow-up appointment for one month later. One of the requirements for this medication is you have to get your blood tested a month in advance. He gave me the blood order and stated that I needed to get it done no later than XX date or they would have to reschedule my follow-up appointment and it would set everything back. Well, I've always been a hard stick and as luck would have it, after everyone one in the office trying and around 6-10 sticks, they still couldn't get any blood from me. I had no option but to go home, wait to heal, and try again in a few weeks. This happened right before Christmas, so the office was closed many days and I ended up just waiting till all the holidays were over to call and explain my situation. I was even planning to go by the day I called and pick up a new order so I could go ahead and get my blood drawn and not have to push everything back even farther. The office lady told me she would have to talk to Bell and call me back. She calls me back maybe an hour or two later and informs that Bell no longer thinks I am a good candidate for the medication. What?! She goes on and explains that he thinks with my history of depression/anxiety that I would not be good on this med. When I tell her that I could just notify him if my depression got worse and come off the medication, she also states that he thinks my acne isn't severe enough and that I should just go back on the topical med I was using prior (which didn't work and was the whole point in trying this). I end up just telling her to cancel my appointments and hang up. So first off, let me state that if he, Bell, had done any research on the medication like he tells his patients to do, he should have seem that there is no proven link between taking Accutane and depression. Some users have reported their depression getting worse, but some users have also reported their mood getting better as their faces clear up, which makes sense. Second, if that was a real concern for him he would have mentioned that in my initial consultation not made me go try to get blood work done just to turn around and say "Never mind, I've decided I don't want to treat you". To me, it seems like he just didn't want to go to the trouble of moving everything back because I wasn't able to get my blood work down in time (which wasn't my fault) or dealing with me anymore in general. Like if you're going to do a job, and definitely one that requires extra certifications or trainings, then do it right. But that's fine, I'll just collect my medical records and go to someone else that actually cares about what they do and how it might affect others. read more
