They also stock a variety of prescription food and such--I have always been able to get my cat's medicated food and pills there easily enough. I started using this clinic when I first moved to Ottawa because of its location to my then apartment, it was very convenient for me. But, in that time my cats have seen a revolving door of doctors--all very good and friendly, but rarely the same one twice. So while the care was good, I have grown tired of explaining my cats' conditions every time I go in. Short version: Take your pet somewhere else…read more Long version: We were new to the Ottawa area and this place was a five minute walk from our apartment. Last year we decided to go with it since we had no recommendations and we needed to start somewhere. We were obviously spoiled by our awesome vet we had in the last town we lived in because this place is just awful comparatively. I'm a little wary of places that have too many doctors as I never get the same doctor or even the same receptionist, vet tech or vet assistant for each visit. Sometimes when I am in there it feels like the head doesn't know what the tail end is doing. Unorganized and scrambling around. They overcharge. They try to guilt you into paying for blood work, fecal samples and xrays you don't need. Upselling is so incredibly annoying to me, especially when it comes to the health of my animals. A vet recommended I feed my animal Science Diet. Science Diet is one of the lowest quality pet foods out there and can actually cause health problems (I guess they get more money that way down the line). I lost all confidence in this place after being told this. One of their many doctors my animals have seen pushed medicine in the form of a treat for my pet.. My pet wouldn't touch them. I called to see if I could exchange it for a medicine in drop or pill form that my cat would be able to take. I was told that the doctor that had seen my animal is not in and will call me tomorrow morning. Well tomorrow morning came and went and I never received a call back. I called them again and they told me they do not do refunds or exchanges on anything except food. I wish they had told me this before I paid 25 dollars for a 'treat' form of medicine that I was pretty sure my cat wouldn't take. They never mentioned it. Now I am stuck with a bag of medicine that is useless to me. I have dropped approximately 900 dollars here, the least they could do is absorb the cost of the medicine. Now they have lost my business and I will warn anyone who asks for a vet recommendation to stay away. I will be looking for another vet now that I know what type of place this is. It ticks me off when a vet's office cares more about money then the animal they are supposed to be caring for.

They genuinely care about my dog and about the care that they are able to give him. Follow up calls and check ins occur very regularly; I have never had a vet's office call me to check how my dog is doing! Monday, I made the very difficult decision to have my senior cat euthanized. One of the hardest decisions of my life was made so much gentler with the help of the staff. My oldest son and I were able to stay with our cat for the entire time. The staff was compassionate and explained every step of the way. Our family was able to say good-bye feeling supported, comforted and understood.

The team is amazing, from the reception employees, the techs and the veterinarians... All truly amazing and caring for our furry baby! We have an Australian Shepherd and some medication is known to be an issue for the breed, they were on it before we even asked. They answered all our (many) questions, are always patient with us, and are not gauging on medication, shoots, food, etc. We feed our dog raw food and the vet explained the pros and cons of raw food, provided us with tips on ensuring our dog has a healthy and balanced diet, etc. We have sinced moved from downtown and the extra drive is worth it! Their hours and availability are incredible... Don't get me wrong, they are busy and this whole COVID distanciation is not helping, but we have had a few emergencies where they were able to see us withing fantastic timelines (within minutes in some cases), squeezing us between two patients or first thing in the morning if a vet was available. They are the absolute cleanest Veterinarians hospitals I've ever been to and they reclean the table in front of me so that I can feel confident that I'm putting my kitties on a germ free exam table. All of the staff there is super friendly and caring. They even email me to tell me that they spent time giving my kitty love and cuddles while they spend the day in their care. Following a delayed diagnosis of kidney failure, we were counseled to have our 13 year old, beloved dog put down (to be clear, this was absolutely the right option for us and we did feel supported in making this decision). Because our dog was unable to walk, the veterinarian agreed to come to our home. When he arrived, I was very distraught and emotional, and he had forgotten to pack with his supplies the anesthetic. While we all make mistakes, I was devastated when the veterinarian asked me if I thought my dog Bella 'would be ok without it.' I said no, and that he should go back to the clinic and get it before performing the procedure as I wanted to be certain Bella would not be in any physical or emotional distress. The procedure itself was not smooth. My husband had to physically assist and the veterinarian took about 10 tries before being able to find a vein (I shudder to think how distressing that would have been to my dog had I not insisted on the anesthetic). Fast forward three weeks; we had selected (AND PAID FOR) the option of having Bella's ashes preserved and returned to us. I was informed this would take 2-3 weeks. When I called the clinic on 3 weeks +1 day I was told Bella's ashes would be returned to me within a few days and the clinic apologized for the delay. When I saw the clinic's phone number on light up on my phone an hour later it was with the expectation the ashes had arrived. But no. The clinic was calling to inform me they had 'neglected to process my payment and so....ugh....Bella is still here.' My poor, beloved dog has been sitting in their freezer, forgotten about, since February 3. I don't have a lot of experience with pet loss, I will admit, but this hurt my heart terribly. I walk past the clinic daily and knowing Bella has been there all this time, was devastating for me. I share this in the hopes that someone who is seeking kindness and compassion in their veterinary care option, goes anywhere other than Landsdowne, because you will not find an ounce of either of those there.

I've taken our dog to Pretoria Pet Hospital for almost 2 years now and it has been a very good experience. I've visited them on numerous occasions; ranging from normals visits for vaccinations to an emergency visit when our puppy ate something that made him keep vomiting. Every time we've been treated with respect by the competent and courteous staff. Pretoria is in a great location. It is close to the canal path and Bank street so it is an easy walk for anyone who lives downtown. Being able to walk to the vet is important if you don't own a car as many taxi drivers will refuse service if your pet doesn't fit in a carrier and waiting for a pet taxi during an emergency is stressful. If you do have a car, they only have street parking but the street has very few business so I don't think you'll run into problems finding a spot. We did some price comparing when looking to get our dog neutered. We found Pretoria to be competitive with others vet in Ottawa but but on the higher end of estimates. For vaccinations Pretoria cost the same amount as the other places we were considering and was more convenient. The staff is incredibly friendly and accommodating. During our visits we've seen four of the five veterinarians and they've all been wonderful. In fact, I like them so much I don't even bother requesting a specific vet when booking an appointment. The vet techs and assistants have all been very friendly and good at their jobs. They do a great job of getting our dog, who is weary of strangers, to let him take his temperature and check him out. The receptionists have all been very nice as well. They always call the day before our appointment to confirm appointments and actually call back if you leave a message. In addition, if you just have a question they'll check with a vet and call you back. This is great when you have a "my pet just _____ do I need to bring him in"" question. One time our dog managed to break off part of a knuckle bone and swallowed it. A short while later he started vomiting 5-6 times in a short period so I called Pretoria to see what they recommended. The reception was very helpful and were able to get me in to see a doctor within an hour to have our dog checked out. The vet did an examination and gave a prescription for two things to help him pass the bone chunks and keep down water. She said if that didn't work by tomorrow we should being him in for xrays and possibly surgery (all done in office). The total cost for the vet trip including medicine was around $180 and our dog recovered wonderfully after he took the medicine. Downtown is lucky to have such a great pet hospital. Yes, it is a little more expensive than some other options out in the suburbs but it is convenient and has a wonderful staff.
