If you are ever in Palermo, this restaurant is worth the 30 min drive down the coast…read more Ristorante Al Burgo offers unique spin on traditional Sicilian dishes, catering to a worldly palate looking a wonderful experience. Nestled in Castellammare del Golfo between the pedestrian zone of Corso Giuseppe Garbaldi and the marina, down some enchanted rustic marble steps, sits a unique gem. My first experience was like this... My GF and I, were sat around the time of sunset, gazing upon a gorgeous view of the mountains and the vast Tyrrhenian Sea. The table was situated on the serpentine steps that cascade through a tiny corridor down to the fishing port below. Music, people, and the sounds of the ocean filled the streets as we dined. Our first dish was a fantastic mix of Sicilian favorites: fresh fish, fruit, and vegetables; new combinations of these typical foods join with different Mediterranean flavors. Across the board the selection was superb. For our prima plate we shared two pasta dishes that turned out to be a complete dream. Our server recommended a dish I've never had before. It was a busiate pasta blended with light tomato and oil based and topped with prawns and fish eggs. My eyes lit up with delight as I embraced the saw the meal and embrace the smell. It was outstanding. My Gf had the squid dyed linguine with delicious prawns and sea urchins. She couldn't believe how much her dish took her back to her childhood when she would collect sea urchins with her late grandmother. It was really a joy just to see her face as she devour it. For desert we had the semifreddo; a beautiful semi-frozen blend of hot espresso and the coffee gelato, comes together perfectly. Hands down one of the best meals I've had in Italy/ in my life. It was so good that even on our 3 day trip we had to go back a second time. I got the pesto gnocchi that time and after that the perfectly cooked tuna, it was simply delicious. She had the sea urchin pasta again. I cannot wait to go back.

Firstly, we walked in at 7:40 and although it was empty, there seemed to be some confusion that we didn't have a reservation. (Let me add that that it wasn't full by the time we left at almost 10.) Nevertheless, they did seat us at a table in the open patio that did have some breeze. We ordered- nothing outrageous- spaghetti with sauce, gnocchi with sauce and cheese, pasta alla norma (a local dish) and a pizza (their specialty). The pasta came out completely wrong- we let them know, but explained that the kids were starving so we would deal. The pizza came out charred and the ingredients were canned. I couldn't even eat it. When we asked for the bill, I was shocked to see that not only did they charge us for everything, they had the audacity to add a cover charge. I brought it to the waiter's attention and he argued with me, but begrudgingly took off the cover after lecturing me on how they would have remade the dishes. We had already waited 45 minutes by the time the food came, I wasn't going to ask the kids to wait again for their dinner. We come to this area once a year and I will not be visiting this establishment again.

The beer and wine were good which is the only reason why it gets two stars. The waiter took our order and was miserable about it. What ever happened to service with a smile?! Two tables next to us, party of 2 and party of 4, seated after us were served and finished eating their meal before we got our dish 40 minutes later. Ok, maybe they want to bring it all out together? Nope, pizza took another 10 minutes and Pasta came out completely wrong from what we ordered. Oh and the pizza, don't expect fresh mushrooms, vinegar tasting mushrooms and pizza with zero flavor. This was not fuor di latte cheese. I don't even know what it was. Zero flavor other than the vinegar taste on the mushrooms. Huge disappointment. We have been to better places in the center of town. Pretty decor, good beer, poor service and bland food.

La Duchessa - This is supposed to be plain spaghetti with just tomato sauce... notice the salted ricotta on top.
