Contacted Cunningham's regarding cleaning oriental rug . I was warned when I purchased the carpet, that it must be cleaned by a company who is knowledgeable/experienced in cleaning this type of rug. Cunningham's reinforced to me that they were experienced in cleaning oriental rugs and it would not be a problem. Unfortunately, when they returned the rug, several of the colors had bled onto the background (light beige) of the carpet and the texture of the carpet changed. I don't think I've ever written an internet review before about anything, but I feel as if I have to warn other consumers about Cunningham's. We sent four rugs to be cleaned by them in November 2017. When they returned a month later, and after a $760 cleaning bill, one of our rugs was totally destroyed. The rug we sent out had some wear and tear and some dirt, which is why we got it cleaned in the first place, but when we got it back, the stains were larger, the backing of the rug had totally dissolved, the material was frayed and further worn, it was puffy (before it had been flat and thin, which is why we bought it to go under our dining room table), and it had shrunk several inches on each side. Please see the attached photos. After several phone calls, someone from Cunningham's came out to take pictures. He was visibly stunned at the condition of the rug. After several weeks, we were told the following: "As we discussed rug cleaning is part science and part luck. With so many manufacturers out there all using different methods of construction it is impossible for any rug cleaner to know what the outcome of a cleaning will be because we do not know everything used in the different constructions." The rug came from Crate & Barrel. It's about as mainstream a rug as one could purchase. Further, the materials used in the construction were plainly printed on the care label. After a few phone calls to other cleaners and a discussion with Crate and Barrel, we were told that it is plainly obvious and common industry knowledge that dry extraction is the appropriate method for cleaning a viscose rug. This was not the method used by Cunningham's. Instead of admitting error, Cunningham's shifted blame to the rug itself: "However, the rug cleaner can not be responsible for what we believe to be inherent flaws in the way certain rugs are manufactured." It was the rug's fault? Or, maybe, it was my fault for hiring them to clean the rug in the first place? "Tufted rugs can be beautiful and are often inexpensive and therefore appeal to the mass market but they are not designed to last very long and in some cases really aren't designed to be cleaned." Apparently, I should have known that the rug wasn't designed to be cleaned and should never have sent it to Cunningham's in the first place? Crate & Barrel had this to say: "The cleaner also stated that their cleaning method is both science and luck. We don't believe luck should be a factor as a professional cleaner should know how to clean this type of rug. The recommended cleaning method is professional dry extraction. ... A professional cleaner should know which method is best, as it is common knowledge and the construction is on the rug's tag. Fibers do not change whether being used on a shirt or carpet and Viscose like Rayon should be dry cleaned." Anyone can make a mistake. All I ask is that mistakes be acknowledged and amends made. They have only offered to reimburse the cost of the cleaning ($240) and nothing else. This is unacceptable when an entire rug must be replaced. Why? "Unfortunately, rug manufacturers are not making it easy on rug cleaners to successfully clean all types of rugs without some inherent risk of physical changes. Due to this unfortunate trend we can not be liable for replacing items altered as a result of cleaning." In short: cleaning rugs is hard! We can't keep up! I got a quote for pickup and cleaning of an antique oriental rug. When the rug was picked up they upsold me to a deodorizing package. While they had it I got an estimate of $125 for binding repair. When the rug was delivered, it was the wrong rug. They quickly sent another truck with the correct rug. Then I noticed the repairs weren't done. When I alerted them and sent pictures of the condition, they quickly issued a refund for the repair work. 2 weeks have gone by before I write this review and not a word from them. I recently returned from Central Asia with a beautiful handwoven rug. Unfortunately, a beverage mishap during Sandy left my carpet demolished - the colors had bled and the drink stain was still there. I took the rug to Cunningham's after seeing a coupon for them in the a BSO handout and did so with some skepticism: I am new to the classy rug game and was hoping I wouldn't get taken. I talked with Chip on the phone and dropped it off to Steve. He gave me a tour of the facility and explained what they may be able to do. Long story short, the rug dye job was very primitive and after calling and consulting three rug repair specialists all over the country, the dye bleed was irreparable. Still, Steve cleaned the carpet and didn't charge me a thing. If I ever need something cleaned in the future, I owe these extremely customer-oriented guys the business. read more

Wish I could give them a negative *. After being charged $1,100.00 for a 9-1/2 X 13' rug to be cleaned, I waited 2 months for the rug to be returned to me. Rug doesn't look any better than before the (supposed) cleaning. read more

Cunningham's returned my clean rugs today and they took them to the basement all rolled up and ready for the moving van. The men who transport the rugs for Cunningham's have to go to a school to learn about rugs and to identify them. One of the delivery men identified each of my rugs for me as to country of origin. This is very helpful, since I bought them so long ago that I had forgotten what they were! One small Bokhara rug had extensive fraying on two sides, and Cunningham's repaired it. Now it looks like new. I had 11 rugs cleaned (three of them large area rugs) and they brought back new pads for all of them. I'm so glad I found this rug cleaning service. I took a chance on them despite only having two reviews but I went on their website and could see that their technique would be the best way to get my shag rug cleaned. It's very difficult to clean shag rugs. I practically searched all of yelp trying to find reviews with "shag rug" to no avail. You can't just take it to a Persian rug place and expect them to use the same technique. And other carpet cleaners quoted me prices based on them coming to my place, steam cleaning it the way they would wall to wall carpet and then wait hours to have it dry on hardwood floors. That would be a disaster and not to mention it wouldn't thoroughly clean it. Instead Cunninghams comes and picks it up, washes it in their facility using special machines and whatever technique they think is best, dry it and then deliver it to you. Yeah they were a little more expensive than what most places quoted me and the last place I tried which never cleaned my rug (You can read my other review for more info) BUT Cunninghams did a fantastic job and felt like it was well worth it. They were on time, took pictures, measured it, sent me an email with the invoice so I wouldn't have any hidden costs, and then they delivered the rug as promised fresh and clean, and they repaired the glue that was coming off from the bad job the other company did. I normally wouldn't try a company so far away since I live in Arlington but since they picked it up and delivered it all included in the price I gave them a try and so happy I did. I have complaints on an area rug they cleaned which have never been resolved. After a number of phone calls attempting to resolve the problems, I just gave up on these people.When they came to pick up the rug they did not have any paperwork to sign...that they were picking up the rug. Called to inquire about the rug weeks later; they seemed to have trouble locating it. Brought the rug back tightly bound with cheap white twine which caused it to bubble when unrolled. When I called about this problem, the sales associate told me to get a wet rag and and iron to get the bubbling and wrinkling out. Why should I have to do this? The rug didn't leave my house this way, why was it returned in this condition? This rug now looks terrrible and ready for the garbage can. read more

Purchased a used handmade oriental rug that was in horrible condition including urine smell. They not only stayed open an extra 30 minutes when we went to drop it off (since we were caught up in traffic), but they were able to get it into almost original condition. I can't thank them enough!
