On my way out of town from Gun Lake, I stopped at Curly Cone about 6 miles from the casino, and honestly, it ended up being one of the highlights of the trip. At first glance, it looks like a small ice cream stand, but it's grown into much more. There's a farm stand, a catering truck, and a full menu that goes way beyond desserts. They serve breakfast all day, along with burgers, shakes, and classic diner-style food. When we went around 9:30 a.m. on a Wednesday, it was packed with locals, which is usually a good sign. The food really stood out. The bacon was easily the best part--thick, meaty, perfectly cooked, with a rich smoky flavor that tasted like it came straight from a local farm, not a package. The home fries were another highlight, with chunks of potatoes and long strands of caramelized onions that felt very nostalgic and homemade, like something you'd get from your grandmother's kitchen. The atmosphere is very old-school diner. Lots of booth seating, a counter where you can sit and order like the classic milkshake-and-coffee spots, and an overall cozy, small-town vibe. The service matched that feel too--the waitress was extremely friendly and welcoming. One thing to note: it was very cold inside. It was about 26° outside that morning, but I still had to keep my coat on while eating, which took away from the comfort a bit. There's not a ton immediately around it--just a gas station across the street and a Mexican restaurant next door (which was closed when we went), though there are a few more options a short drive away. Overall, Curly Cone is a hidden gem. It may look like an ice cream stop, but it delivers a full, satisfying diner experience with standout breakfast food and a strong local feel. Really amazing soft serve! I do not understand how they do the flavor bursts, but they work. The environment is clean and cute with endless purchasable retail around on every counter. The service was neutral to curt. They probably have very intense days as staff and so I'm gonna give them a ton of credit here about their lack of friendliness. And we had to argue to order food crazy.....They told us to go sit outside that we couldn't sit at the tables. mind you there was a lot of empty tables... I recently went to lunch with 2 older friends. We are all disabled. One of us uses a walker, another uses a cane, and I had on a cast following foot surgery. Our lunches were fine - about what you'd expect of a diner. The problem was our server, the person who appeared to be a manager, and the owner, Kim Hawthorn who was called and made aware of what happened to us and then backed up the way her help handled the situation. As we were eating, a server walked behind me and dumped what had to be at least 3 pops down my back. It made a huge puddle on the floor all under our feet and all around us. She then got a mop and proceeded to splash us some more. She demanded that we stand up in the puddle and move so she could mop easier. I guess the thought of using paper towels or something to dry up the pop before we had to walk into it didn't occur to her. She was so rude we were all in shock! I realized after this that we should have called non-emergency 911 for help in getting up and walking through the liquid. It was definitely dangerous for us, and it was just fortunate none of us fell. One of my friends was so embarrassed and humiliated that the entire restaurant was looking at us help each other up, while we were being yelled at by the server, that she left her money on the table and went out to her car in tears. My other friend and I went up to pay and the server just kept yelling at us. We expressed disbelief in how we were being treated and said we thought that at least our lunches should be comped because of how awful the situation was. Our server called the owner, Julie Hawthorn, who said we still had to pay for our lunches because "we already ate them". Why oh why didn't I turn on my camera? Our server and the other woman who appeared to be the on-site Manager then started to yell at us that we were "entitled old women" and that we were banned from ever coming back to Curley Cone. Oh dear. How will I ever live through being banned from such a crappy place. Seniors beware. They don't like us at Curley Cone! Go to Russo's. It's close and soooo much better all around. read more

Spent the day on Gun Lake and stopped at Curley Cone on the way back home for some ice cream. We had our dog with us, so it was great that they had a drive through option. There were paper menus in boxes along the drive in path as well as on a large sign before you turn into the drive-thru. The drive-thru window team was courteous and quick. The ice cream was great as well. We had strawberry shake, heath bar and whippy dip flurries. Good size, great ice cream! We will definitely stop here again! read more

So we went in and placed our order at the dirty table (none were clean). Food was mediocre, at best....and overpriced. Restroom was the dirtiest I've seen at a restaurant in years. Our young waitress forgot my husband's ranch - not a huge deal - and so I politely reminded her, and asked for napkins....she still never returned with the ranch and we never got the napkins either. Idk why I haven't left a review sooner, as I've had nothing but horrible food, and service. Every time I order my eggs medium well & every time I get them they're over easy. This has happened several times, no joke. How do you have cooks, who don't know how to cook? It's very obvious there's a lack of training for the cooks and the servers who are very rude and have forgotten about me in the window , and in the diner. The place for Awesome Burgers and Cones! After driving up from Florida to Grand Rapids to visit family. We decided after spending all day on Gun Lake swimming and playing with our kids that some burgers and cones sounded really tasty. This place was recommended to us by family members to stay at gun Lake. It was our first time here visiting here and it was an automatic five stars for me, for the awesome olive burger otherwise everything else about it was four stars. There isn't too many places in West Michigan where you can get an olive burger outside of Mr. Burger let alone West Michigan so this was a definite treat. The service experienced wasn't the greatest during our visit, but it was due to the restaurant being short staffed we were told. I greatly liked the old time diner feel to the place the menu was awesome the food was incredible the french fries were also very good and even the ice cream was awesome. I had the Michigan pothole very chocolatey basically a chocolate overload. As we were leaving my daughter noticed the $.10 ride on pony, reminding me of the simpler-days back in the late 90s where you could ride these ponies at Meijer's. Curly Cone was our "go to" local favorite for breakfast. Not anymore! On our last two visits our meals were mediocre and definitely not the quality we experienced in the past. Likewise, service is also lacking in courtesy. On our last visit the server forgot all about us. Thirty minutes passed before we asked another server about our order. A few minutes later our food finally arrived. It looked like it had been sitting far too long under the heat lamps, and was dropped in front of us as the server dashed away as quickly as possible. We didn't see or speak to our server again until we tried to get our bill. That is not how you treat customers. If you make a mistake you should admit it, apologize and make it right. We aim to support our local businesses. So we may give Curly Cone one more chance. But three strikes and you are "out". read more

This started in the small original drive in style ice cream shop on the corner but has turned into a local hot spot for ice cream and diner style meals. They are always busy and the servers are constantly running around trying to accommodate everyone. Don't come here in a hurry, enjoy your time with friends and family while you wait for your meal. The food is surprisingly good for "just being" Curley Cone. The buffalo chicken wrap was very tasty although it could have used more chicken. Went there tonight and pulled up to the window at 9:53.asked them to make me a turkey avocado sandwich. I was told by one of the young ladies working there that she couldn't because they were closing in 5 min. But she had enough time to make me deep fried chicken strips WHICH WER ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE. She was only worried about getting out of the curly cone right at 10pm and screw the customer. I guess I should expect that attitude from these young kids they got working there. So, we almost did not stop because, as a dedicated Yelper, I try to never go anywhere below four stars. But my daughter wanted ice cream and so here we were :) The place is nice and clean and our service experience was great. We were greeted as we walked in the door. Our server was was very nice and pleasant the whole time. They have a candy counter and make their own candy and the woman making the fudge came by and offered us a taste (kinda like liking the bowl as she actually had the bowl with little spoons to give us a taste with). Between the four of us, we had hamburgers, chili cheese fries, onion rings, chicken wings. The fries are the seasoned kind-not my favorite, but everyone else liked them. The onion rings were okay-nothing special. Husband and I thought the burgers were quite good. The wings were appreciated--again, not the best ever, but good. Hubby and I had malts--he asked for extra malt in it and they happily complied. The malts (one chocolate one vanilla) were outstanding. The other two had softserve ice cream cones and they said they were great. Also bought a box of their homemade rock candy. It is awesome. Long wait for overpriced soft served ice cream. Wait staff are lazy and would rather talk on their phones or to each other than wait on customers. If you go inside, be prepared to wait just as long to be served as waiting in long drive thru lane. Plus, they usually get your order wrong, and who wants to wait longer for them to make you a new one. There is no refund for the wrong food item either. Having trouble because we've eaten here before and the food is wonderful. Ice cream is especially good. Just disappointed today in service. Being busy is understandable. I'm a retired restaurant manager. And I get that help is hard to get. Our server, however, was boring, uninterested, and unnattentive. Forgot multiple items and was totally indifferent. Had to go up to get refills, get forgotten items, and pay my bill. She rushed up to cash me out. I gave her a tip but probably shouldn't have. She also forgot to charge us for a few items. I've had food here a lot of times and I've always enjoyed it. However the service when I come in seems to be getting worse every time. If you come in late afternoon the chances of getting the ice cream that you order is slim to none. There's probably five people running around the back like chickens with their heads cut off making ice cream. And today? There's only three of us in the dining room and the service is slower than can be. The waitress was very nice and helped us with a misunderstanding on the bill. The music in the kitchen is also louder than the music in the dining room. I enjoy listening to the Doo-wop oldies that is played over the sound system in the restaurant, not Bruno Mars blaring from the kitchen!! Not very happy with the experience and service. I understand that it is currently near impossible to get good service right now (ya know, COVID sucks) but training the employees that you do have to properly take care of people in your restaurant is another thing.
